  • Historical Earthquakes Affecting Urban Life Along the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey, International Earthquake Symposium 22-24 October, 2007, P.31, Kocaeli
    J. Black Sea/Mediterranean Environment Vol.13 241-252 (2007) Traces of Historical earthquakes in the ancient city life at the Mediterranean region Tarihsel depremlerin Akdeniz Bölgesi antik kent yaşamındaki izleri T. Levent Erel1 and Fatih Adatepe2 1 İstanbul University, Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education, Müşküle Sokak No.1 Vefa 34470 Istanbul/Turkey 2 İstanbul University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Management, Müşküle Sokak No.1 Vefa 34470 Istanbul/Turkey ________________________________________________________ Abstract During the historical periods, the Mediterranean region was divided in several areas, from west to east, the Carian (Menteşe), Lycian (Teke Peninsula), Pamphylia (Antalya Plain) and Cilician areas. Cilician was divided into the Mountains (Taşeli Peninsula) and Lowland Cilicia (Çukurova) regions. Further east behind the Amonos Mountains, Antiokheia (Antakya), was a completely seperate region. All these regions were shaken by numerous earthquakes produced by main fault systems from the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean. The major geological structures are Hellenic Trench, East Anatolian Fault, Ecemiş Fault and Dead Sea Fault in the region. Along with material destruction, earthquakes also result in tectonic rising of lands. This rising fills in ports and speeds up the process of ports getting shallow. Another negative consequence of earthquakes is the drying up of the water sources or the changing of their banks. Key words: Mediterranean coast, historical earthquakes, ancient cities Corresponding author: [email protected] 241 Introduction The coastal areas of Turkey neighboring the Mediterranean Sea have been subject to numerous destructive earthquakes. These earthquakes have largely given direction to certain historical events urban architecture and the way of the life of inhabitants.

This trip may be privatized for up to 10 people with a flexible departure date between April and November. This trip through Southwestern Turkey along the Lycian Way blends healthy outdoor activities with rich history and cultural sites. We'll stay in the most charming villages and towns of the Lycian Coast. We'll hike, visit classical coastal sites, sea kayak to explore sunken cities, and search for the fire breathing monster, Chimaera of Mt. Olympos. Main Stops: Olympos/Çıralı – Kaş – Dalyan About the Tour Operator: More and more people these days are demanding personal and meaningful vacations, rejecting large package tours to travel in small groups, with good companions. These discerning travelers want to be physically active and intellectually challenged. They are considerate about their carbon footprint and they want to use the services of a local tour operator with environmental awareness. We have accomplished the task of combining these aspects in active and memorable trips. © Yūgen Earthside – All Rights Reserved – 2020 - 1 - DAY BY DAY ITINERARY Day 01: Arrive in Antalya Meet at the Antalya Airport and take a private minivan to be transported 1.5 hours away to Olympos Beach. Archaeological, geological, hydrochemical and surface elevation data, as well as 14C age dating constrain a paleo-hydrogeological model, explaining the submergence of the city foundation walls below the groundwater table. In this model, tectonically induced subsidence of the acropolis (Toçak Dağı) initiated a debris flow into the area of the lower city. Both, natural and anthropogenic gravel accumulation resulted in the formation of a new aquifer pathway redirecting formerly bypassing karst water into the city center. Consequently, the inhabitants of Limyra had to fight against the rising ground water table at least since the 6th to 10th centuries AD. Die antike Stadt Limyra war vom 6. Jh. v.Chr. bis zu byzantinischer Zeit ein bedeutendes urbanes Zentrum in Lykien an der süd- westlichen Küste von Kleinasien.

Historical Places Information 1. Perge Perge was an ancient and important city of Pamphylia, between the rivers Catarrhactes and Cestrus (Turkish Aksu Çayı). A treaty between the Hittite Great King Tudhaliya IV and his vassal, the king of Tarhuntassa, defined the latter's western border at the city "Parha" and the "Kastaraya River". The river is assumed to be the classical Cestrus. West of Parha were the "Lukka Lands". Parha likely spoke a late Luwian dialect like Lycian and that of the neo-Hittite kingdoms. • Antalya, Turkey
ANTALYA, TURKEY Arrive: 0800 Wednesday, July 3 Onboard: 1800 Friday, July 5 Brief Overview: Turkey is a vibrant and astonishing blend of history and culture situated at the crossroads of Asia, the Middle East and Europe, commonly referred to as Asia Minor. The southern city of Antalya may not be familiar by name, but it has a rich Greco-Roman history and was the starting point of St. Paul’s first missionary journey. The newly restored “old town” oozes charm and a wealth of artifacts and interesting exhibits are on display at the Archaeology Museum. Be sure to try some Turkish pancakes, Gozleme, while you are here and sip some Turkish tea at a local tea house. Nearby: Many sites of the early Christian church are located nearby including Perge, Psidian, Antioch and Iconium. The home of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus!) is about 2 hours away in Demre, Myra. The world’s oldest intact amphitheater is in nearby Aspendos and is still being utilized for performances. Beneath the clear waters of the Mediterranean, the sunken city of Kekova is a fascinating place to explore. Students may opt to hike to Chimera, the site of the eternal Olympic flame. You can also go river rafting in the Taurus Mountains or spend a relaxing afternoon at one of the local beaches. Overnight: The World Heritage Site of Pamukkale and its natural wonder “cotton castle” are considered to be the “Yellowstone of Turkey”. Aphrodisias, the art and marble center of the Roman era, also boasts the world’s oldest stadium. Xanthos, another World Heritage Site and the former capital of Lycia, is a premier archaeological site.
