William Cooper is a founding member & one fifth of the critically acclaimed supergroup Black Market Militia, which also includes Killah Priest (Wu-Tang/Sunz Of Man), Tragedy Khadafi (Capone-N-Noreaga/Juice Crew), Timbo King (Wu-Tang/Royal Fam) & Hell Razah (Wu-Tang/Sunz Of Man). When speaking of God's Will, the Newark, NJ wordsmith stated, "I want to give back to what has been one of my biggest influences in life...this album will serve as my greatest contribution to Hip-Hop culture." William Cooper's well thought out verses lay perfectly over Wu-Tang affiliate producer BP's rugged soundscapes, who also handles 100% of the album's production & has worked with a long list of Hip Hop titans that include Nature (QB/The Firm), 9th Prince (Wu-Tang/Killarmy), Kool G Rap, RZA, Masta Killa & Cappadonna. Sonically, BP conducts gritty backdrops & thought-provoking interludes that keep listeners on their toes, constantly guessing what will happen next. When discussing his production approach on "God's Will", BP stated, "I wanted to produce an album that can be played from start to finish with never having to press the fast forward or skip button...a roller coaster ride of emotion." Cooper & BP have developed a magical chemiestry between MC & Producer that is almost absent in today's Hip-Hop world. Today's MCs tend to gather a list of the most popular producers at the moment & compile their tracks to form more of a compilation rather than a cohesive well thought out album. God's Will also boasts an impressive all-star lineup of guest appearances that include Hip Hop legends Sticky Fingaz (Onyx), Rah Digga & Sean Price. Cooper spoke of his album's features, saying, "I just reached out to some friends I have made in the music industry, that I respect & always wanted to work with...every feature shared my vision & did their part of making God's Will a beautiful piece of art. It was like a family reunion...it was great to re-conect & continue our friendly competition on the mic...we really all brought the best out of one another. He's the only man who could hang with Eminem on The Marshall Mathers LP. And he's still doin his thing a full fifteen years after making everybody Slam. Sticky Fingaz is, inarguably, one of the nicest to ever touch a mic and this week he sat down with us at RapReviews to talk about the new Onyx retrospective that just came out on DVD, his feelings on the way Hip-Hop historians have been treating the group's legacy, and what Patrick Swayze, Tia Carrrere and Tom Berenger all have in common. Editor's Note – I'm pretty sure I lost some money at the end of this interview. Adam Bernard: You have the new Onyx DVD, 15 Years of Videos, History and Violence, in stores now. What does it have for longtime fans? Sticky Fingaz: It basically has every video we ever did as Onyx and as solo artists and it has an hour and fifteen minute documentary. They had these dudes called Underground Funk that used to just follow us around everywhere we went with a camcorder, so we got all that caught on tape. It's definitely never seen before footage.

A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse. • Automatic Recognition of Samples in Musical Audio
Automatic Recognition of Samples in Musical Audio Jan Van Balen MASTER THESIS UPF / 2011 Master in Sound and Music Computing. Supervisors: PhD Joan Serr`a,MSc. Martin Haro Department of Information and Communication Technologies Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona Acknowledgement I wish to thank my supervisors Joan Serr`aand Martin Haro for their priceless guidance, time and expertise. I would also like to thank Perfecto Herrera for his very helpful feedback, my family and classmates for their support and insightful remarks, and the many friends who were there to provide me with an excessive collection of sampled music. Finally I would like to thank Xavier Serra and the Music Technology Group for making all this possible by accepting me to the master. Abstract Sampling can be described as the reuse of a fragment of another artist's recording in a new musical work. This project aims at developing an algorithm that, given a database of candidate recordings, can detect samples of these in a given query. The problem of sample identification as a music information retrieval task has not been addressed before, it is therefore first defined and situated in the broader context of sampling as a musical phenomenon. The most relevant research to date is brought together and critically reviewed in terms of the requirements that a sample recognition system must meet. The assembly of a ground truth database for evaluation was also part of the work and restricted to hip hop songs, the first and most famous genre to be built on samples. Techniques from audio fingerprinting, remix recognition and cover detection, amongst other research, were used to build a number of systems investigating different strategies for sample recognition.

news #34 MUNGOLIAN JETSET - MUNGODELICS Hot on the heels of 2011`s "Schlungs", the Jetsetters have kept those buttons busily pushed, and are already here with their next chapter installment, featuring 8 new nuggets entitled "Mungodelics". The album is essentially a psychodramatic sequel to the highly acclaimed "We Gave It All Away, Now We Are Taking It Back" album of 2009, as it is musically a blend of originals and remakes made into originals, as well as solo performances and external collaborations from the band`s musical core members, Knut Saevik and Paul "Strangefruit" Nyhus. All in all, "Mungodelics" musically summons everything that is hazy, dazy, underearthly and crazy. This is the Mungolian Jetset taking you on a ride through the seasons, and shifts of the days and nights, from the Cantina to the Ewok forest, via ritualistic dancing at Kilmin Taboour and stellar swimming in the galactic Goa. I say a B.I.G. verse, I’m only biggin’ up my brother1 It is long past time to reform the Copyright Act. The law of copyright in the United States is at one of its periodic inflection points. In the past, major technological change and major shifts in the way copyrightable works were used have rightly led to major changes in the law. The invention of the printing press prompted the first codification of copyright. The popularity of the player piano contributed to a reevaluation of how musical works should be protected.2 The dawn of the computer age led to an explicit expansion of copyrightable subject matter to include computer programs.3 These are but a few examples of past inflection points; the current one demands a similar level of change.

The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia by Sandra C Zichermann A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education Sociology in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Sandra C Zichermann 2013 The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia Sandra C Zichermann Doctor of Education Sociology in Education University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This thesis investigates the rise of the cultures and music of hip-hop and rap in the West and its effects on its female listeners and fans, especially those in academia. The thesis consists of two parts. First I conducted a content analysis of 95 lyrics from the book, Hip-Hop & Rap: Complete Lyrics for 175 Songs (Spence, 2003). The songs I analyzed were performed by male artists whose lyrics repeated misogynist and sexist messages. Second, I conducted a focus group with young female university students who self-identify as fans of hip-hop and/or rap music. In consultation with my former thesis supervisor, I selected women enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes focused on gender and race because they are equipped with an academic understanding of the potential damage or negative effects of anti-female or negative political messaging in popular music. My study suggests that the impact of hip-hop and rap music on young women is both positive and negative, creating an overarching feeling of complexity for some young female listeners who enjoy music that is infused with some lyrical messages they revile.
