Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.

MARKETING K-POP AND J-POP IN THE 21ST CENTURY Sarah Brand Senior Thesis Department of East Asian Studies Dickinson College May 10, 2017 Brand 2017 Music is an important part of daily life and, as a result, an integral part of culture. The way in which individuals are exposed to different genres and types of music helps illustrate the extent to which globalization has had an impact on the world. Before the invention of the internet, music was only available for purchase to consumers who went to record stores and physically purchased goods. Now, countless unique songs and genres are readily available with just a single search. Due to how easily consumers can access new music, digital distribution has completely overtaken the profit from selling physical copies of albums. In 2006, record labels still made $9.4 billion from CD sales in the United States, despite the fact that digital distribution entities, such as Napster and iTunes, provided digital copies of the same songs.

(Japan) Introduction AA: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this panel, the panel titled “Japan and East Asia Music Market Update.” It is for the second consecutive year, that Music Publishers Association of Japan is sponsoring a panel on the same theme, and this fact alone, I think, clearly demonstrates how vital this region is for our music industry worldwide. As it is this year, it was my pleasure to moderate this panel last year, and because we have so many topics to discuss during this panel today, I have no intention of repeating what I said last year about the importance of this region. However, let me just point out that as the economy in Japan is showing some strong signs of recovery and as the buying power of people in various countries in the region continues to grow, the overall climate for our business in this region is heating up and the time is quickly maturing for artists from other parts of the world to try to tap opportunities in this region.
