  • CHAPTER XIX No. 3 SQUADRON's OPERATIONS OVER the SOMME No
CHAPTER XIX No. 3 SQUADRON'S OPERATIONS OVER THE SOMME No. 3 SQUADRONhad been operating over the Somme Valley, with the Australian Corps, for a fortnight before Richthofen's death. It arrived on the scene at about the same time as Australian Corps Headquarters Staff, that is to say, at the end of the first week in April. To meet the situation of a stiil unsettled line, only lightly dug in, where " active and continuous operations " (the official name for open warfare) might be resumed at any moment, the duties of the corps squadron were for a time re-arranged. The artillery-patrols located enemy batteries as they appeared, and called down counter-battery fire upon their guns whenever they were observed to be in action. For some weeks after the squadron's arrival in the Somme area, it carried out bomb- ing and machine-gunning of the German positions on a much larger scale than it had done in Belgium. The fairly con- stant presence during April of low-flying German scouts showed that the enemy had not yet given up his offensive designs in this region, and on April 11th three R.E.S's, out learning the line at 4,000 feet, were attacked by six Albatros scouts over Hdnencourt. After some ticklish manceuvring, in which the enemy were driven off from two of the Aus- tralian machines, the third was seen to go down badly out of control. Both pilot and observer (Lieutenants A. W. Rees' and G. A. Paul2) were wounded, but by skilful handling of the machine the pilot managed to land within the British lines.

  • Major Swindell's World War 1 Diary
This article contains extracts from the war diary of my Grandfather, Major Swindell. He was a Pioneer in the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment. Having joined the colours in 1906, he served right through the war, from being one of the Old Contemptibles, all the way to the armistice. He ended the war as Battalion Pioneer Sgt. The diary was written in two separate volumes – one is a Letts diary for 1915, covering the period 5th August 1914 to 31st December 1916 and the other is a notebook which covers the period 1st January 1916 to 3rd September 1918. The diary ends two months before the armistice. I don’t know whether he ended there or if he started a missing third volume. The diary covers most of the major battles of WW1 – starting with the Retreat from Mons (including Le Cateau), the Marne/Aisne, First Ypres, Second Ypres, The Somme/Ancre, Messines and the 1918 offensives. The reader may be puzzled about my grandfather’s name, Major. The story goes that this unusual name came about from a short-lived tradition in his family of naming the boys after army ranks. Major was the last one, as after he was born, all the women in the family got together and put a stop to it. My father read parts of the diary over the years, but he was put off reading the whole thing, as the handwriting can be quite difficult to decipher. I decided to attempt to transcribe the diary for the benefit of both my father (who died shortly after I finished) and future generations.

  • Rushmoor Men Who Died During the Battle of the Somme
Rushmoor men who died during the Battle of the Somme Compiled by Paul H Vickers, Friends of the Aldershot Military Museum, January 2016 Introduction To be included in this list a man must be included in the Rushmoor Roll of Honour: citizens of Aldershot, Farnborough and Cove who fell in the First World War as a resident of Rushmoor at the time of the First World War. The criteria for determining residency and the sources used for each man are detailed in the Rushmoor Roll of Honour. From the Rushmoor Roll of Honour men were identified who had died during the dates of the battle of the Somme, 1 July to 18 November 1916. Men who died up to 30 November were also considered to allow for those who may have died later of wounds received during the battle. To determine if they died at the Somme, consideration was then given to their unit and the known locations and actions of that unit, whether the man was buried in one of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Somme cemeteries or listed on a memorial to the missing of the Somme, mainly the Thiepval Memorial, or who are noted in the Roll of Honour details as having died at the Somme or as a result of wounds sustained at the Somme. The entries in this list are arranged by regiment and battalion (or battery for the Royal Artillery). For each man the entry from the Rushmoor Roll of Honour is given, and for each regiment or battalion there is a summary of its movements up to the start of the Battle of the Somme and its participation in the battle up to the time the men listed were killed.
