About the Cemetery Codes used in Part 4 The author researched and wrote this book in the 1990s. It was designed to be published in print although, sadly, this was not achieved during his lifetime. Throughout the text, John Bilcliffe used a set of alpha-numeric codes to abbreviate cemetery names. In Part 4 each soldier’s name is followed by a Cemetery Code and, where known, the Grave Reference, as identified by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Here are two examples of the codes and what they represent: T2 Thiepval Memorial A5 VII.B.22 Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont: Section VII, Row B, Grave no. -

Major Swindell's World War 1 Diary
This article contains extracts from the war diary of my Grandfather, Major Swindell. He was a Pioneer in the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment. Having joined the colours in 1906, he served right through the war, from being one of the Old Contemptibles, all the way to the armistice. He ended the war as Battalion Pioneer Sgt. The diary was written in two separate volumes – one is a Letts diary for 1915, covering the period 5th August 1914 to 31st December 1916 and the other is a notebook which covers the period 1st January 1916 to 3rd September 1918. The diary ends two months before the armistice. I don’t know whether he ended there or if he started a missing third volume. The diary covers most of the major battles of WW1 – starting with the Retreat from Mons (including Le Cateau), the Marne/Aisne, First Ypres, Second Ypres, The Somme/Ancre, Messines and the 1918 offensives. The reader may be puzzled about my grandfather’s name, Major. The story goes that this unusual name came about from a short-lived tradition in his family of naming the boys after army ranks. Major was the last one, as after he was born, all the women in the family got together and put a stop to it. My father read parts of the diary over the years, but he was put off reading the whole thing, as the handwriting can be quite difficult to decipher. I decided to attempt to transcribe the diary for the benefit of both my father (who died shortly after I finished) and future generations. -

Manuel, Alexander
Private Alexander Manuel (Number 201969) of the 20th Battalion (Central Ontario), Canadian Expeditionary Force, having no known last resting-place, is commemorated in the stone of the Canadian National Memorial which stands on Vimy Ridge. (Right: The image of the 20th Battalion (Central Ontario) shoulder-patch is from the Revolvy. Website) (continued) 1 His occupations prior to military service recoded as those of both artist and designer, Alexander Manuel has left little behind him of the story of his movement from the Dominion of Newfoundland to that of Canada. The 1911 Census documents the Manuel family, his parents, two siblings and seventeen-year old Alexander, as living at 277, Christie Street in Toronto, while a passenger list of the SS Kyle likely records the father – but no other family member – as crossing from Port aux Basques to North Sydney on October 11, 1910. The next records date from the year 1915 when a medical report shows that Alexander Manuel enlisted on October 29. On that day he presented himself to a (the?) Toronto Recruiting Depot where he underwent the above-mentioned medical examination, a procedure which found him…fit for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. He then attested. Three days later, on November 1, the formalities of his enlistment were brought to a close when an officer of the 95th Overseas Battalion, Major Charles Mitchell, declared – on paper – that…Alexander Manuel…having been finally approved and inspected by me this day…I certify that I am satisfied with the correctness of this Attestation. It was also on that day that Private Manuel was taken on strength by – and on the pay-list of - Major Mitchell’s unit, the above-said 95th Overseas Battalion*. -
