Subbiah Name and degree of faculty adviser: Nancy Vyhmeister, Ed.D. Date completed: September 2000 Problem Tamil Nadu is one of the states of India located in the southern part. The people who live in the state are called Tamils. Agriculture is the main occupation of this state. About 70 percent of the total population of the state are farmers. Hinduism is the main core of their religion. Hinduism taught them various beliefs, such as salvation by work and transmigration of the soul. At the same time, the farmers are caught up with various traditional beliefs which are very much influenced by their agricultural activities. -

Festival defines the traditional/cultural value of food, dresses, music and dances of any community which teaches the students sharing, interpersonal, organizational skills, safety, sanitation and hygiene and demonstrates the importance of Societal and environmental value. Past 3 years the Business Administration Department has hosted a Traditional day to display and share the traditional values and culture to fellow students. 450 BBA students and nearby School students participated. BBA department also conducted UPHEAVAL program 2. Tamil Nadu Formers Festival by College of Agricultural Sciences Faculty of Agriculture highlights Thai Pongal to demonstrate SRMIST stakeholders the management of food, water, sanitation, health following traditional IKS by interacting with local farmers. Pongal is celebrated with a lot of zeal in various parts of India, especially, Tamil Nadu and this year, it is being celebrated on January 14. It is one of the main multi-day harvest festivals of Tamil Nadu and is observed with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm there. The people in Southern parts of India come together and have grand celebrations on Pongal which include lots of good food and family time. -

Food for Thought A Life in Four Courses TRANSCRIPT OF PODCAST EPISODE 9: Bimal Giri Bimal Giri was born in Bhutan and grew up in Nepal. In this episode he talks to us about celebrations, festivals and the traditional foods of his homeland. Bimal: I‘m Bimal Giri, I’m 47. I was born in Bhutan, brought up in Nepal and currently living in Edinburgh, Scotland. My cultural, em, we are Hindu, mainly, mainly agricultural country where we source most of our foods from what we grow, and food is, em, one of the important, em, things that we consider. We consider food is a gift of God, or reward. We have to take it in a very peaceful manner, and the food has to be very, aah, nutritious, healthy. So it is in our top priority. Nepal is a small country, just twice the size of Scotland. But it is very much diverse. Em, our country is surrounded by Tibet and India, so we source food from these both countries and it influences our cuisine. So if we say, if we go to south part our cuisines are very much influenced by the Indian dishes like curries and chapattis and parathas kind of things, but if you go to north part it is pretty much like a Tibet or Chinese like momo, the steamed dumplings or some pasta or noodles. So it varies, but again the rich or well off people has, they tend to eat more, kind of, meat and dairy product. Whereas, ah, the other class who cannot afford those, they just live with vegetables, ah, rice and their main staple diet is the dal bhat which consist of rice, lentil and vegetables twice a day, and that’s the food they eat. -

Ulundhu Kali / Uluntangali / Urad Dal Halwa – South Indian Recipe Ulundhu Kali / Uluntangali is a South Indian traditional delight. This traditional sweet is specially given to teen girls when they attain puberty mainly because as it strengthens the pelvic bones and muscles. This sweet is made of super nutritious ingredients like urad dal (Protein), palm jaggery(Iron) and gingelly oil (Vitamin E). You can have this healthy and nutritional dish for breakfast or as snacks. Good for adults and kids. Ingredients 3/4 Cup of Urad Dal (White) 1 and 1/4 Cup of Palm Jaggery 1/4 Cup of Gingelly Oil Pinch of Salt 1/2 Cup of water or as needed Method Grate the palm jaggery and keep it aside. Dry roast the urad dal lightly, let it cool for sometime. In a pan, heat the water, after it boils, add the palm jaggery , let it be in the flame until jaggery melts and stir it occasionally. Once it done, turn off the flame Powdered the urad dal finely or rava consistency using mixie or spice grinder. Using tea strainer, strain the jaggery syrup to get rid of impurities. In a medium flame, add the Jaggery syrup to the same pan, add a pinch of salt, bring it to a boil, add urad dal powder little by little and stir well to avoid lumps. Add oil little by little and keep on stirring until the mixture leaves the sides of a pan. Serve hot or cold with a tsp of ghee. Make a small balls, in the center, add a tsp of ghee. -

COMPAS: SUPPORTING ENDOGENOUS DEVELOPMENT Mr. Don Philoris Wijenayaka in his ceremonial dress carries out a ritual in a rice field. With mantras and sounds the water is chanted. The spirits of rats, mice, elephants and wild boars are asked to take no more than their fair share of the crop. Mr. Wijenayaka is the shaman, or the Kapu Mahattaya as he is called in Sri Lanka. In Sinhalese this means : the link between the spirits and human beings. Mr. Rukman Wagachchi of the Sri Lankan Network of Agri-Cultural Revival is taking part in this kem ritual. According to the owner of this field, there was less pest damage, lower costs and higher yields after the kem has been performed last season. This season, the farmer wants to observe more carefully and collect more accurate data. The tindana is the earthpriest among the Tallensi in northern Ghana. He exercises spiritual power, especially over land and sacred groves. Tribal people in India use gonads (chalk marks) to communicate with the spiritual world. As part of its traditional organisation, the community has special people, jilakatas, to protect the cultivated fields. They also have to protect the plots against negative influences which are perceived as the result of bad human behaviour (Bolivia). The spirit mediums are the educators on how to live with nature. Nature as the habitat of both the spiritual world and the animal kingdom reaffirm the tripartite relationship between the people, ancestral spirits and the material world (Zimbabwe). With the help of self-made posters, a farmer and spiritual leader explains traditional rituals to other farmers and encourages them to experiment (Sri Lanka). -
