    Funny Cide’s Epic Kentucky Derby Victory is Ten Years Old By Bill Heller Can it be ten years since a three-year-old gelding named Funny Cide, and a yellow school bus carrying a group of high school friends who owned him, rearranged the racing industry’s position on New York- breds? “I don’t believe it,” his retired Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos said Tuesday. “It went by too fast.” Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, agreed: “I do have trouble believing that.” Asked what’s the first thing that comes to his mind when someone asks him about Funny Cide, Jose said, “That he was the best three-year-old in my racing career.” These days, Jose has a new career running a feed company, Instride International, which began operating in 2012 and now serves three Florida tracks: Calder, Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows. “Basically, I’m running the whole thing,” Jose said. “I’ve been selling to the trainers. They are friends of mine.” His client list includes a bunch of New York trainers who winter in Florida, including Todd Pletcher, John Kimmel, Linda Rice, Rick Violette and John Terranova. Funny Cide, a son of Distorted Humor out of Belle’s Good Cide by Slewacide, was bred by WinStar Farm and foaled at Joe and Anne McMahon’s Thoroughbred farm just outside Saratoga Springs. He was originally purchased for $22,000 before Tagg bought him for $75,000 for Sackatoga Stable, an entity formed when several old friends got together for a Memorial Day barbecue in their home town of Sackets Harbor.

My pur- pose is to explain to the uninformed public that not everyone in the Thoroughbred industry considers “kickbacks,” “rebates,” “payoffs,” or however you want to describe it, an acceptable business practice. When someone has put their trust in you to provide them the best possible advice and guid- ance, you serve that person. It is understood that they will pay you for this service and if someone else offers you any payment as entice- ment or reward for buying their product, you disclose this to your principal. Most disappointing to me is that various lead- ers in our industry have defended their position by stating this as an acceptable business prac- tice. It may be acceptable to some, but not every- one. I bought horses last year from some of the individuals mentioned in various articles, and there was not one time that I received a pay- ment afterward from them, nor did I expect pay- ment, nor had I asked for it. My family’s farm sold tens of millions of dollars worth of horses last year, including the third-highest-priced yearling in history at $9.7 million, and there was not one time that we offered payment to buyers, neither after the sale nor before.

    Catching up with Funny Cide: Still a fan favorite in retirement By Joe Nevills Daily Racing Form 3 Barbara D. Livingston Dual classic winner Funny Cide in 2008 carries trainer Barclay Tagg. The story of Funny Cide almost reads like a Hollywood screenplay. A modestly priced New York-bred before it was cool to be a New York-bred, Funny Cide was bought by Sackatoga Stables, a group of likable high-school chums who traveled to races like a varsity football team going to regionals, and together they went on a journey that took them to the doorstep of Triple Crown immortality. In a sport where cash is king, their blue-collar story captured the nation’s imagination when Funny Cide won the 2003 Kentucky Derby and became the first gelding to win the classic race since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929, then followed it up with a 9 3/4-length win in the Preakness Stakes. This year marks the 10th anniversary of his dual classic-winning season. Lacking the equipment to be shuffled off to the breeding shed after his Triple Crown bid was denied in the Belmont Stakes, Funny Cide, the first great runner by his sire, Distorted Humor, continued racing after his Eclipse Award-winning 3-year-old season until age 7 and won 11 of 38 races for $3,529,412. After his retirement from racing, Funny Cide spent a year as a stable pony for his trainer, Barclay Tagg, but six seasons of racing had taken a toll on the gelding’s body, and he was retired once again, this time to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, where he took up residence in December 2008.
