Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 I certify that this thesis is entirely my own work Dionysios Kapsaskis 2 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the notion of authenticity and its existential, aesthetic and political determinations in the work of Marguerite Yourcenar. It aims to trace the desire for authenticity in Yourcenar’s fiction and criticism and to assess the strategies employed to preserve the possibility of authentic representation. The investigation focuses on two aspects of the problematic of authenticity: subjectivity and politics. Both are discussed by Yourcenar in predominantly aesthetic terms. She argues that individual existence cannot be understood in its own uniqueness because it is entrapped within representational structures. The impasse of representation also affects the political self-constitution of nations and communities. Yourcenar’s response to this problem is developed through her meditation on art and time. She observes that authenticity is not a question of original creativity, but one of accepting the perishing of all representations in time. She also understands realism as a critically aware choice to accept the limits of narrative representation. Yourcenar attempts to rescue the notion of authenticity for modernity by foregrounding difference and repetition. The thesis discusses this strategy in relation to de Man’s thought on irony and history, Benjamin’s writing on film and translation, and Heidegger’s analysis of spatio-temporality. The last part of the thesis focuses on poststructuralist interpretations of Heidegger by Lacoue-Labarthe and Lyotard. It is argued that the model of political self-realization which Yourcenar proposes for post­ war Europe can be associated with Heidegger’s vision of national identity in Nazi Germany. Yourcenar’s Memoires d ’Hadrien is used as a case study showing the ambivalence of her discourse on authenticity, a discourse which hovers uncomfortably between modem political aestheticism and the desire to overcome aestheticism at large. This conclusion helps to contextualize Yourcenar’s work in relation to political and philosophical modernity. Yet for all its positive connotations, this authentic relationship is seldom understood as the unproblematic coordination of the self and what lies beyond it. The difference between interiority and exteriority is itself so persistent, that authenticity never takes the form of reconciliation. Rather, for Yourcenar, authenticity designates a paradoxical achievement on man’s part, which consists in recognizing, accepting and preserving the separation of self and world. This thesis proposes to investigate the notion of authenticity and its existential, aesthetic and political parameters in the work of Yourcenar. These three parameters, existence, aesthetics and politics, define key forms of involvement with the world and describe specific ways in which difference manifests itself. Drawing from the existentialist tradition of the twentieth century, I shall use the term existence to designate the plain fact of being in the world. This definition of existence shall be further clarified (and tested) in my thesis. Nonetheless, it must be stated at the outset that ‘existence’ denotes

Following Eve Sedgwick, who proposed that a “rich tradition of cross- gender inventions of homosexuality” should be studied separately from gay and lesbian literature, this dissertation examines male homoerotic fictions authored by women. These fictions foreground a disjunction between authorial and textual identities in gender and sexuality, and they have often been accused of inauthenticity, appropriation, and exploitation.

The visual here refers initially to her engagement with the visual arts in selected essays. Analysis shows her developing an independent critical voice and strategies in relation to existing artwriting and art history because of personal attitudes and choices within certain historical contexts. This in turn leads the reader to interpret the visual more broadly as the verbal articulation of all visualised encounters in Yourcenar’s fiction, for the study of which parameters have to be defined and a methodology elaborated. Topics, themes and motifs such as the corporeal impact of the visual, the contribution of images supplied by historiography (itself defined in visual terms and not only as a source of visual referents), the picturing of the Other, the working of memory, colour, appearance and dissolution are explored in Yourcenar’s chief works of fiction - mainly Mémoires d ’Hadrien, L ’Œuvre au Noir and Un Homme obscur - via the privileged point of entry supplied by her essays on various artists.

The writing process was long, it started when Marguerite Yourcenar travelled to Italy in the 20’s and visited Hadrian’s villa and it lasted until 1951, year of the publication of the book. To create, Hadrian’s character, Yourcenar sought inspiration in the historical sources related to Hadrian but also in the objects she saw in several museums. Thanks to them she could put a face to Hadrian and the rest of characters in the book and start an interesting friendship with several members of the staff. Resumen.- Memorias de Adriano es una de las novelas históricas más conocidas. Su proceso de redacción fue largo, se inició durante un viaje de Marguerite Yourcenar a Italia en los años 20 durante el que visitaría Villa Adriana y se extendió hasta 1951, fecha de su publicación. Para crear el personaje de Adriano, Yourcenar se basó principalmente en las fuentes históricas de época romana pero también en los objetos que pudo ver en diversos museos. Gracias a ellos pudo poner rostro a Adriano y al resto de personajes que aparecen en el libro pero también entablar una fructífera amistad con el personal. BRADLEY University of Notre Dame In a review-essay of the English translation of Marguerite Yourcenar’s Mémoires d’Hadrien, published in the Anglican Theological Review of 1956, the specialist in early Christian history Frederick C. Grant suggested that a passage in Yource- nar’s novel on the cult of Antinous showed not only ‘fine writing’—due in this case as much to Yourcenar’s translator, Grace Frick, as to Yourcenar herself— but also the influence of Apuleius. Hadrian speaks: The cult of Antinous seemed like the wildest of my enterprises, the overflow of a grief which concerned me alone.     134 Marguerite Yourcenar: Piranesi at Petite Plaisance By Carl Little When I moved to Mount Desert Island with my family in 1989, we lived in the first house on the left on Oak Hill Road, in what we came to call, with a smile, "downtown Somesville." The property, my mother’s, backed onto Brookside Cemetery, one of the most charming and idyllic sites of final repose in New England. Not long after settling in, I learned that the world-famous novelist Marguerite Yourcenar (1903–1987) was buried there alongside her longtime companion and translator, Grace Frick (1903–1979). Interested in literary things, I set out to learn more about this writer who, in 1981, was the first woman to be admitted to the French Academy since it had been founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1635.1 I started by reading her masterwork, Memoirs of Hadrian, and wrote a short review of it for the Somesville Library and Mount Desert Island Historical Society newsletter, Betwixt the Hills. First published in 1951, the book takes the form of an extended letter written by the dying Roman Emperor Hadrian to his adopted grandson, Marcus Aurelius. Hadrian reigned from 117 to 138 AD. The book demonstrates Yourcenar’s special genius for reviving the past.2 In my review, I noted how parts of the book were relevant to our times.
