On the orientation of the Avenue of Sphinxes in Luxor Amelia Carolina Sparavigna (Department of Applied Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino) Abstract The Avenue of Sphinxes is a 2.8 kilometres long Avenue linking Luxor and Karnak temples. This avenue was the processional road of the Opet Festival from the Karnak temple to the Luxor temple and the Nile. For this Avenue, some astronomical orientations had been proposed. After the examination of them, we consider also an orientation according to a geometrical planning of the site, where the Avenue is the diagonal of a square, a sort of best-fit straight line in a landscape constrained by the presence of temples, precincts and other processional avenues. The direction of the rising of Vega was probably used as reference direction for the surveying. -
Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth

Final Paper: Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth In Naguib Mahfouz’s Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth, fourteen different stories of the heretic king Akhenaten are told. Some praise the king and his beliefs, some condemn him as a plague to Egypt, but all of the stories are unique in their detail and perspective. From Akhenaten’s teacher Ay, to his doctor Bento, to his wife Nefertiti, each character presents new and different details about Akhenaten’s life. In order to determine the truth about Akhenaten, each character’s statements must be considered closely, keeping in mind the biases and ulterior motivations that may exist. The full history of Akhenaten can only be found after examining his life through all fourteen perspectives. Some characteristics of Akhenaten are described similarly by nearly all of the characters in the novel. The agreement serves as reason to deem these things matters of fact. The characters agreed that Akhenaten was an effeminate-looking man, that he developed a belief in the One and Only God, that he claimed to have heard the voice of the One God, and that he preached a policy of absolute non-violence when he became pharaoh. Because so many of the details of Akhenaten’s life are unclear in the novel, these basic truths can be used to determine the truthfulness of certain characters. For example, the High Priest of Amun described Akhenaten as “ a man of questionable birth, effeminate and grotesque (13).” Ay, on the other hand, describes Akhenaten as, “dark, tall, and slender, with small, feminine features (28).” Based on these descriptions, it is clear that the High Priest did not like Akhenaten and that Ay was more sympathetic. -

Late 18th dynasty harems Lise Manniche The Amarna correspondence reveals exciting aspects of the rhetoric among sovereigns in the Near East in the late 18th dynasty, and it also provides a unique insight into human resources in the institution of an Egyptian harem. Pictorial and other evidence, however disjointed, adds to our understanding of its significance which was not solely aimed at the sexual gratification of the king of Upper and Lower Egypt. | OF QUEENS | EGYPT A new National Geographic exhibition in Washington, D.C., shines a light on the lives (and afterlives) of the royal women of ancient Egypt. From the founding queen of the New Kingdom, Ahmose-Nefertari, to Cleopatra VII, Egypt’s last queen and pharaoh—a span of more than 1,400 years. Martina Minas-Nerpel from Swansea University tells us that “while the king was the unquestioned political and religious figurehead of Egypt, queens had a complex role with more power than is usually recognized. The newsletter of The Southampton HOTEP Ancient Egypt Society Issue 32: July 2018 As a Summer Holiday outing you might like to visit the following exhibition at the Review of June Meeting Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge: http://maa.cam.ac.uk/photographing- On Saturday 16 June, our own Treasurer, tutankhamun/ Glenn Worthington, gave a talk on Photographing Tutankhamun Tutankhamun’s Funeral, which was a nostalgic 14 June – 23 September 2018 reminder of why so many of us became interested in Egyptology. Starting with a review of tomb This exhibition explores the pioneering development in the Valley of the Kings, Glenn images taken during the 1920s excavation of showed that the original intended occupant of Tutankhamun’s tomb, by British photographer tomb KV62 was almost certainly not Tutankhamun, Harry Burton. and that it may have been started as a private tomb. Maps and plans from the Theban Mapping Project made clear just how many private tombs there are in this supposedly royal necropolis and comparison of tomb decoration suggests that work on KV62 may have begun as early as the reign of Tutankhamun’s grandfather, Amenhotep III. Photography was essential to archaeology, but Burton’s photography did much more than simply record information about the tomb and its treasures. Wente, Professor, The Oriental Institute and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations The University of Chicago had an early association with the mummies. With the exception of the mummy of Thutmose IV, royal mummies, albeit an indirect one.
