NSQG Until We Meet Again Challenge Week 1: Beatles' Songs NSQG Until We Meet Again Challenge Week 1: Beatles’ Songs Joyce Drenth I selected “Old Brown Shoe” and looked up the lyrics. “Now I’m stepping out this old brown shoe”. I received a gift of a brown tie-dyed wool a couple years ago and never determined a good use for it. By fussy-cutting, I think the shoe reflects wear and is perfect for a bouquet of fall flowers. I also played with making chenille strips cut with pinking shears for some of the leaves. It’s fun to say ‘What Would Happen If?’ when playing with fabric. I used Terial Magic on the 2 flower materials before cutting them out. I didn’t like the flat flowers afterward so, WWHI came into play again. I ran a gathering stitch through the base of each petal and drew it up, popped on a fused wool center and anchored them to the quilt with colonial knots. Grass is a fringed piece of wool and the bee has 4 layers each of two different colors of tulle fused together for wings. It was fun experimenting these past two weeks. Love the outcome! Laurie Golden Yellow Submarine Flo London My challenge was inspired by the Beatles song A Taste of Honey from the Please Please Me album which was released in 1963. Karen Venson I was debating what to do for this quilt. I started searching Beatles images and the album cover of Help called me :) Can’t wait to see the others from guild members Janice Hedberg My Beatles song is “Strawberry Fields Forever.” I know the song has nothing to do with strawberries but it reminded me of the “you pick” strawberry field close by. This project has been fun as the whole family has listened to Beatles music and contributed ideas. Jo DIck I did it! My Beatle theme They Say It's Your Birthday. This is 10" x 9". The inspiration is that, Both my sister-in-law and I share the same birthdate - June 15th. This is the one day a year I can say, it's my birthday to YAH!! Can't wait to get started on my next one. Karen Snell Here Comes the Sun Hoping for Sunnier Days to come. Cindy Olsen May I introduce you to COVID Kraken? Based on the song title "The Sea of Monsters" from the Yellow Submarine album. It's instrumental, so as a flautist and member of bands and orchestras, it really spoke to me, and the music includes the turbulence of our times. Join us for our next challenge The theme will be Bucket List Due June 30th 6:00pm.

1 Playlist Nov. 13th 2016 LIVE! From DUKES in Malibu 9AM / OPEN Three hours non stop uninterrupted Music from JPG&R…as we broadcast LIVE from DUKES in Malibu…. John Lennon – Steel and Glass - Walls And Bridges ‘74 Much like “How Do You Sleep” three years earlier, this is another blistering Lennon track that sets its sights on Allen Klein (who had contributed lyrics to “How Do You Sleep” those few years before). The Beatles - Revolution 1 - The Beatles 2 The first song recorded during the sessions for the “White Album.” At the time of its recording, this slower version was the only version of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” and it carried that titled without a “1” or a “9” in the title. Recording began on May 30, 1968, and 18 takes were recorded. On the final take, the first with a lead vocal, the song continued past the 4 1/2 minute mark and went onto an extended jam. It would end at 10:17 with John shouting to the others and to the control room “OK, I’ve had enough!” The final six minutes were pure chaos with discordant instrumental jamming, plenty of feedback, percussive clicks (which are heard in the song’s introduction as well), and John repeatedly screaming “alright” and moaning along with his girlfriend, Yoko Ono. Ono also spoke random streams of consciousness on the track such as “if you become naked.” This bizarre six-minute section was clipped off the version of what would become “Revolution 1” to form the basis of “Revolution 9.” Yoko’s “naked” line appears in the released version of “Revolution 9” at 7:53.

  • Hallelujah Leonard Cohen
Hallelujah Leonard Cohen I've heard that there’s a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah x 4 You say I took the name in vain But I don't even know the name And if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light In every word It doesn't matter what you’ve heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah x 4 I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah Hallelujah x 4 "Hallelujah" is a song written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen, originally released on his album Various Positions (1984). Achieving little initial success, the song found greater popular acclaim through a recording by John Cale, which inspired a recording by Jeff Buckley. It has been viewed as a "baseline" for secular hymns. Following its increased popularity after being featured in the film Shrek (2001), many other arrangements have been performed in recordings and in concert, with over 300 versions known. The song has been used in film and television soundtracks and televised talent contests. "Hallelujah" experienced renewed interest following Cohen's death in November 2016 and appeared on many international singles charts, including entering the American Billboard Hot 100 for the first time.

1 95.5 KLOS PLAYLIST DEC. 2ND 1 2 9AM THREE HOURS OF GEORGE HARRISONGS George Harrison – Isn’t It A Pity (version one) - All Things Must Pass ‘70 Simple, effective, majestic – this track is one of the most magnificent tunes of George’s solo career. First composed during the “Let It Be” sessions, it was recorded on June 2nd, 1970. Some considered this to be a parody of “Hey Jude,” with it’s length and similar sounding backing chorus – but the song is anything but a parody – but another piece of firm evidence of George’s power as a master songwriter. 9.10 BREAK 2 3 The Beatles - Blue Jay Way - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Written by George Harrison on August 1, 1967 while vacationing in a rented house in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles. The story is essentially the same as the lyrics imply. On a foggy night in L.A., George sat at his rented house waiting for friends to arrive, but the maze of thin and winding streets and the thick fog rolling in got the best of them and they became lost. George: “I’d rented a house in Los Angeles on – Blue Jay Way, and I’d arrived there from England. I was waiting around for Derek and Joan Taylor who were then living in L.A. I was very tired after the flight and the time change and I stared writing, playing a little electric organ that was in the house. It had gotten foggy and they couldn’t find the house for some time.

32 The Role of The Beatles in Popularizing Indian Music and Culture in the West Rodrigo Guerrero Faculty Advisors: Dr. Charles Brewer, Dr. Sarah Eyerly, and Dr. Douglass Seaton College of Music Abstract: The Beatles were responsible for several long-lasting innovations that shaped the history of pop music and Western culture in general. As a British rock band that dominated the popular music scene during the 1960s, they made one of their most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, contributions through the incorporation of elements from Indian culture in their music and lyrics. This essay discusses the role that the Beatles played in introducing and popularizing certain features of Indian culture, and specifically Indian music, in the Western hemisphere. I first describe their relationship with Indian culture. In this section, I bring forth questions, such as why they became interested in this culture, why they decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India, and how the trip influenced their thoughts about foreign culture. After that, this essay analyzes the influence of Indian culture and Indian music on the Beatles’ lyrics and music, respectively. Finally, I will illuminate the lasting effect that this cross- fertilization had in subsequent years. he 1960s was a decade of experimentation in popular music. The Beatles, the British rock band that dominated the popular music scene Tduring this decade, was responsible for long-lasting innovations that would shape the history and style of pop music and Western culture. One of their most significant, yet overlooked, contributions to Western culture was the incorporation of Indian musical elements into their songs.
