ABOUT David Hernandez gained national attention with his powerful voice and affable personality as an American Idol finalist. In addition to American Idol, David has showcased his talents on The Ellen Show, The Today Show, MTV’s TRL, EXTRA, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Teen Choice Awards, TV Guides’ Sexiest Stars, Idol Tonight, Idol Gives Back and FOX-TV. David is an incredible performer and has been touring as an original artist for the last 10 years. He was invited to sing at the Inaugural Kick-Off Celebration ball for Barak Obama, performing alongside celebrity recording artists Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Maroon 5, along with event hosts Jessica Alba and legendary TV producer, Norman Lear. War and Pride: “Out Against the Occupation” and Queer Responses to the 2006 Lebanon War Natalie Kouri-Towe Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Communication Studies © Natalie Kouri-Towe 2008 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I examine the role of queerness, solidarity and movement in anti-war activism relating to the 2006 Lebanon War. I investigate two events called “Out Against the Occupation” that were organized during the summer of 2006 in response to the war. These events emerged as a queer response to the context of various gay pride events held throughout the war that failed to develop an anti-war response to the war in Lebanon. These gay pride events include the Divers/Cité festival held annually in Montreal, the first World OutGames held in Montreal, the World Pride events held in Jerusalem and the Queeruption gathering held in Tel Aviv. I argue that we must rethink the role of movement, queerness and solidarity in order to understand how movements of resistance emerge. I do so by examining the role of subjectivity in how we come to move and orient ourselves towards others. RESUME Dans ce mémoire, j'examine le role de la sexualité queer, la solidarité et le movement dans les mobilisations contre le conflit israélo-libanais de 2006. J'examine deux événements appelés “Out Against the Occupation,” organisés durant l'été de 2006 en reaction à la guerre. TUCSON PRIDE: TAKING THE 2020 ANNUAL PRIDE FESTIVAL VIRTUAL After careful consideration and with great respect for our community, the Tucson Pride Board of Directors has voted to not hold an in-person Annual Tucson Pride Parade and Festival this year. In its place, Tucson Pride is taking the annual celebration virtual in October in honor of National Coming Out Month. This decision was not made lightly; the board has carefully monitored Covid-19 guidelines and recommendations from authorities on local, state, and national levels, as well as explored all available alternatives. A virtual festival was determined to not only be the safest approach for 2020 but was also an avenue that allowed us to incorporate educational programming in brief segments throughout the event. With the support of Virtual Arizona Pride and our community, we are looking forward to bringing a quality virtual event this October we hope you will find engaging and entertaining. -

Roark May 2012 Dissertation Examining Committee: Jayasinhji Jhala, Associate Professor, Anthropology Patricia Melzer, Assistant Professor, French, German, Italian, and Slavic Languages Rickie Sanders, Professor, Geography and Urban Studies Sydney White, Associate Professor, Anthropology ABSTRACT “Authenticity, Citizenship and Accommodation: LGBT Rights in a Red State” examines the discourse around volunteerism, exceptionalism, and queer citizenship that emerged within the context of a statewide (anti-gay) ballot initiative campaign in the American Southwest. I argue that the ways in which local volunteers and activists define themselves and their attempts to defeat the ballot initiative are tied to the struggle over the authority to represent local LGBT organizational culture and an emergent New West identity. In such a way, local debates over authentic western lifestyles that divide regional communities intertwine with intergenerational debates over gay liberation and rights frameworks, and the polarized discourse on blue and red states that have dominated the U.S. political climate of the past decade. While statewide campaign leaders with a base in Phoenix (the state capital) focused on polling data and messaging in order to stop the passage of the amendment, many Tucson activists and organizational leaders tied to the LGBT community center sought to strategize a long-term grassroots approach to change hearts and minds. Within this debate over campaign strategy and internal decision- making, both groups drew attention to the differences between the metropolitan areas. -
