Manchester United FC v Celtic FC MATCH PRESS KIT Old Trafford, Manchester Wednesday, 13 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group F - Matchday 1 Any Anglo-Scottish encounter brings a keen sense of anticipation and the atmosphere should be electric when Manchester United FC and Celtic FC step out at Old Trafford on Matchday 1. After all, there were 69,591 spectators present when these sides last met in Manchester – and that was just for Roy Keane's testimonial in May. • Besides the cross-border rivalry, these are two clubs with a proud history in this tournament – Celtic were the first British winners in 1967, United succeeded them as champions the next year - and when you add the hunger in both camps to erase the memories of recent disappointments in Europe, this Group F encounter could well prove a spectacle to savour. Recent disappointment • United are aiming to make amends for a series of increasingly underwhelming performances since their 1999 UEFA Champions League triumph. After reaching the semi-finals in 2001/02, their exits have come gradually earlier: from the quarter-finals (2002/03) to the first knockout round (2003/04, 2004/05) to the group stage last season. Sir Alex Ferguson's men finished bottom of their section last December with just one win and three goals to their name – a severe blow to their prestige. • For Scottish champions Celtic, this is their fourth attempt to qualify from a UEFA Champions League group. They have previously finished third (2001/02, 2003/04) and fourth (2004/05). Last season they suffered a 5-4 aggregate defeat by FC Artmedia in the second qualifying round as Gordon Strachan endured a nightmare debut as Celtic manager with a 5-0 reverse in Slovakia. Changing faces • Strachan's summer transfer business has included signing three players with considerable UEFA Champions League experience in midfielders Thomas Gravesen - a replacement for the departed Stilian Petrov - and Jiří Jarošík, as well as forward Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. • As for United, they signed England midfielder Michael Carrick in a €27m deal from Tottenham Hotspur FC and he could make his UEFA Champions League debut against Celtic. • As a player, Strachan worked under Sir Alex at Aberdeen FC and United and also with Scotland's 1986 FIFA World Cup team. Everton connection • United's Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, was team-mates with Celtic's Gravesen at Everton FC and it was from a Gravesen pass that the England striker scored his first senior goal against Arsenal FC in October 2002. Surprisingly, since a spectacular hat-trick on his UEFA Champions League debut against Fenerbahçe SK, Rooney has failed to find the net in nine subsequent appearances in the competition proper. • Celtic have won three and lost just one of six previous visits south of the border – including triumphs at Blackburn Rovers FC and Liverpool FC in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup. • This is United's first competitive meeting with Celtic but they got the better of them in friendly matches in May (1-0) and July (3-0) this year. UEFA club competition honours • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1966/67 • European/South American Cup: 1967 Ten-year record (including current season) • Celtic have yet to make an impact in the UEFA Champions League but their early exit in 2002/03 qualifying saw them move across to the UEFA Cup and promptly go all the way to the final. 1997/98: UEFA Cup - first round 1998/99: UEFA Cup - second round (having transferred from the UEFA Champions League, second qualifying round) 1999/00: UEFA Cup - second round 2000/01: UEFA Cup - second round 2001/02: UEFA Cup - third round (having transferred from the UEFA Champions League, first group stage) 2002/03: UEFA Cup - runners-up (having transferred from the UEFA Champions League, third qualifying round) 2003/04: UEFA Cup - quarter-finals (having transferred from the UEFA Champions League, group stage) 2004/05: UEFA Champions League - group stage 2005/06: UEFA Champions League - second qualifying round 2006/07: UEFA Champions League - group stage 2005/06 season Domestic record: Celtic were runaway Scottish Premier League champions, losing only three games as they finished 17 points ahead of nearest challengers Heart of Midlothian FC and claimed the only automatic spot in the UEFA Champions League group stage available to Scottish clubs. The Glasgow club's fourth title in six seasons, it was their 40th overall. European record: Celtic failed to make it into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, going out in the second qualifying round to surprise package FC Artmedia Bratislava. A dramatic tie saw the Slovakian side defeat their more fancied Scottish opponents 5-0 at home, only for Celtic to win 4-0 in Glasgow and narrowly go out 5-4 on aggregate. Key facts • Celtic have played 220 times in UEFA club competition, winning 112 games, drawing 36 and losing 72. They have scored 376 goals and conceded 221. • In the UEFA Champions League alone (group stage to final only), they have featured in 18 matches. They have won six, drawn three and lost nine with 20 goals for and 28 against. United • Gary Neville is aiming to break the 100-match barrier in the UEFA Champions League this season. He has played 92 times, scoring twice. • Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes each need six games to reach a century in terms of overall UEFA club competition matches. Alan Smith is two appearances away from the 50-mark. • With the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooij, Ryan Giggs has become the club's leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League with 21 goals from 87 matches. • United extended their excellent start to the Premiership season with a 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur FC at Old Trafford on Saturday. Their fourth win was achieved through Giggs's early header after Cristiano Ronaldo's long-range free-kick was parried into his path by Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson. • Sir Alex Ferguson made three changes from the team that defeated Watford FC on 26 August, with captain Neville returning to the starting lineup after a calf injury, while Patrice Evra and Kieran Richardson also came in. Smith, Gabriel Heinze and Nemanja Vidić have all returned to training after injury but were not fit enough to be involved while Michael Carrick played 79 minutes of the game against the team he left this summer.
