Match background

The champions of England and Scotland meet on Matchday 3 in a cross-border contest that neutrals will hope provides as much drama as their last UEFA Champions League encounters. • When Manchester United FC and Celtic FC faced off in the 2006/07 group stage, each side recorded a victory – United winning 3-2 at Old Trafford, Celtic 1-0 in – and recent history makes Sir Alex Ferguson's men the favourites to prevail once again on home turf. • Although United were held 0-0 by Villarreal CF in their opening Group E fixture, they have gone 16 matches undefeated at home in the competition, while Celtic have not won a single one of their 18 away games in the UEFA Champions League in its modern guise. • Celtic maintained their unhappy sequence of results on the road in suffering their ninth successive away defeat in the competition when going down 1-0 at Villarreal on Matchday 2 thanks to Marcos Senna's 67th-minute free-kick. • Add the points dropped in their earlier home stalemate with Aalborg BK and 's side arrive in Manchester knowing another loss would leave them with a small mountain to climb to qualify from the section. • United, by contrast, sit top of the group with four points after winning 3-0 at AaB last time out, Wayne Rooney (22) and Dimitar Berbatov (55, 79) the scorers. Should they defeat Celtic, they would be strongly placed to progress. • It was Matchday 1 of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League when the clubs met for the first time in European competition – and conspired to produce a five-goal thriller. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (21) opened the scoring at Old Trafford for Celtic, United responded with two goals from (30, 40), the first from the penalty spot, and then (43) made it 2-2 with a fine free-kick. The scoring ended two minutes into the second period when Ole Gunnar Solskjær found the net to secure all three points for the home side. • The lineups for that match on 13 September 2006 were: Man United: Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Mikaël Silvestre, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes (John O'Shea), Ryan Giggs (Ole Gunnar Solskjær), Wayne Rooney (Kieran Richardson), Louis Saha. Celtic: , Mark Wilson (Paul Telfer), , Stephen McManus, , , Shunsuke Nakamura, Thomas Gravesen, Aiden McGeady (), Jiří Jarošík (), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

• Celtic avenged that defeat, and secured their progress from the group stage for the first time, by beating United in Glasgow on 21 November that year. The heroes were Nakamura, scorer of the only goal with an 81st-minute free-kick, and Artur Boruc, who saved a late Saha spot-kick. • The lineups that evening were: Celtic: Artur Boruc, Paul Telfer, Dianbobo Balde, Stephen McManus, Lee Naylor, Thomas Gravesen, Neil Lennon, Evander Sno (Jiří Jarošík), Shunsuke Nakamura (Kenny Miller), Maciej Żurawski (Shaun Maloney), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Man United: Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidić, Gabriel Heinze (Patrice Evra), Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Carrick (John O'Shea), Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha. • United have met Scottish opposition only three times before at Old Trafford. Besides their aforementioned 2006 victory against Celtic, they beat Rangers FC 3-0 in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage and drew 2-2 with Dundee United FC in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup third round. • Celtic's record from previous visits south of the border is W3 D2 L2 – with their most recent successes coming at Blackburn Rovers FC and Liverpool FC, both 2-0 wins on their run to the 2002/03 UEFA Cup final. • Sir Alex had mixed fortunes in Anglo-Scottish contests when managing in Scotland with Aberdeen FC. His Aberdeen side lost 5-0 on aggregate to Liverpool in the 1980/81 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round. However, the next season they eliminated holders Ipswich Town FC in the UEFA Cup first round with a 4-2 aggregate win. • Celtic manager Strachan, who was a scorer in that UEFA Cup win against Ipswich, played under Sir Alex at Aberdeen and Manchester United and also with Scotland's 1986 FIFA World Cup team. • Strachan has enjoyed no previous success when returning to Old Trafford as a manager. During spells in charge of Coventry City FC and Southampton FC he made eight visits for matches – and suffered eight defeats at a cost of 26 goals conceded. • Celtic's Greek forward Georgios Samaras appeared in one Manchester derby during his two-year stay with United's neighbours Manchester City FC, a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford in December 2006. • The most recent Scottish visitors to Manchester were Celtic's great rivals Rangers, who contested last May's UEFA Cup final at the City of Manchester stadium, going down 2-0 against FC Zenit St. Petersburg. • Villarreal will play host to AaB in the other Group E fixture on Matchday 3.

Head coach Manchester United FC: Sir Alex Ferguson Date of birth: 31 December 1941 Nationality: Scottish Playing career: Queen's Park FC, Saint Johnstone FC, Dunfermline Athletic FC, Rangers FC, Falkirk FC, Ayr United FC Coaching career: Falkirk FC, East Stirlingshire FC, Saint Mirren FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC Sir Alex Ferguson has enjoyed almost three decades at the top, cementing Manchester United FC in a position as one of 's foremost clubs. He helped to nurture a group of young players including David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville who formed the backbone of United's treble-winning side of 1999, and the latter two were still serving the club as the UEFA Champions League was regained in 2008, at the end of a season in which also clinched his tenth English title. The esteem in which he is held by his peers is reflected in his position as head of the UEFA Coaches Panel. Sir Alex enjoyed a relatively successful playing career that featured a spell at Rangers FC before becoming player-coach at Falkirk FC. He then managed East Stirlingshire FC and Saint Mirren FC before shooting to prominence at Aberdeen FC. In 1980, the club won the Scottish title to break the Old Firm's 14-year stranglehold, a dominance that has returned since Aberdeen's last championship in 1985. But his greatest glory with the Dons came in 1983 when they beat Real Madrid CF to lift the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. United appointed Sir Alex in 1986 and, after a difficult start, he led the Old Trafford team to their longest period of sustained success. Their first trophy was the 1990 FA Cup, followed the next season by a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph. In 1993 came the first of ten Premier League titles, to which five FA Cups have been added. Ferguson's finest hour arrived in 1999, when two stoppage-time goals gave United a 2-1 UEFA Champions League final victory against FC Bayern München. After failing to get beyond the 2005/06 group stage and also finishing as Premier League runners-up, Sir Alex hit the heights again with the 2006/07 league crown. This was retained in the following campaign before United defeated Chelsea FC in Moscow to claim the UEFA Champions League for the third time in their history.

Celtic FC: Gordon Strachan Date of birth: 9 February 1957 Nationality: Scottish Playing carer: Dundee FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC, Leeds United AFC, Coventry City FC Coaching career: Coventry City FC, Southampton FC, Celtic FC Gordon Strachan was an energetic and talented midfielder who was capped 50 times by Scotland and helped Aberdeen FC to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson. He began in management while still a player at English top-flight club Coventry City FC in November 1996. He helped Coventry avoid relegation and then ended his on-field career aged 40 to concentrate on coaching, keeping the club in the Premier League until 2001. Strachan was sacked early the following season but was swiftly appointed at Southampton FC – whom he again kept in the highest division against the odds. In 2002/03, he took them to eighth place in the English top flight and the FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Arsenal FC but earning a UEFA Cup berth. Strachan announced early the next season that he would step down at the end of the campaign for personal reasons and left his role in March 2004 to concentrate on media work. Always a man in demand due to his tactical astuteness and motivational skills, in summer 2005 Strachan was given the tough task of succeeding Martin O'Neill at Celtic FC. Strachan's reign began with a disastrous 5-0 loss at FC Artmedia in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first leg, and a 4-0 win in the return could not salvage their European campaign. But Celtic regrouped and won the Scottish Premier League in record time and also lifted the Scottish League Cup. In 2006/07, Celtic triumphed in both Premier League and , and got past the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time, falling only to eventual winners AC Milan in the last 16 in extra time. And not only did they again reach that stage last term, losing to FC Barcelona, they produced a tremendous late surge past Rangers FC to retain the Scottish title.

Name Nat. Date of birth UCL UEFA Frank De Bleeckere BEL 01.07.1966 30 54 Frank De Bleeckere is carrying on a family tradition which has endured for more than four decades. De Bleeckere's grandfather was a referee in Belgium in the 1950s and 1960s, and his father René a top-flight match official in the domestic game some 20 years ago. A PR manager born in Oudenaarde, he speaks English, Flemish, French and German and is married with a daughter. He started refereeing in 1984, oversaw his first top-flight match in 1995 and received his FIFA badge in 1998. The same year he officiated at his first UEFA tournament, the UEFA European Under-16 Championship in Scotland, and quickly graduated to UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup duties. He sandwiched UEFA EURO 2004™, where he was one of four specialist fourth officials, with appearances at the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru, where he refereed the final between Mexico and Brazil. De Bleeckere had earlier overseen a showpiece closer to home, the 2005 Belgian Cup final between Club Brugge KV and KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen. He was in the middle for six UEFA Champions League matches in 2004/05 and four the following season before travelling to the FIFA World Cup where he took charge of four matches including Italy's quarter-final defeat of Ukraine. He was soon back in the rarified air of the UEFA Champions League, ending the 2006/07 campaign with AC Milan's 3-0 victory against Manchester United FC that confirmed the eventual winners' place in the 2007 final. The following season, he took charge of the UEFA Cup semi-final second leg between ACF Fiorentina and Rangers FC and was the referee for three matches at UEFA EURO 2008™, including the semi-final involving eventual champions Spain and Russia.

UEFA information

UEFA decision on Club Atlético de Madrid-Liverpool FC match The UEFA Champions League Group D match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Liverpool FC is taking place as scheduled on Wednesday at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid. European football's governing body issued the following statement last week: "Following the decision of UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body to sanction Club Atlético de Madrid for a series of incidents at the UEFA Champions League Group D match against Olympique de Marseille on 1 October, the club has lodged an appeal against the decision and requested suspension of the sanctions to allow their match against Liverpool FC to be played in Madrid as originally scheduled. After immediate consideration of the request for suspension, and having considered in particular the organisational and logistical difficulties related to relocating the Club Atlético de Madrid v Liverpool FC match to another venue at short notice, the chairman of the Appeals Body has decided to grant the request for suspension of the sanctions. "Consequently, UEFA can confirm that the UEFA Champions League match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Liverpool FC will take place as scheduled on 22 October at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid. It should be emphasised that suspension of the sanctions does not mean that the decision of the Control and Disciplinary Body has been set aside. The decision remains in force pending a full hearing of the appeal which will take place on Friday 31 October at the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. UEFA is however keen to stress that safety and security matters, including efficient co-operation with the police, are of the utmost priority and that there is a zero tolerance policy for incidents concerning racism in football. The match will be under particular scrutiny and UEFA is ready to take immediate and further action if there are any reported incidents at this match." FARE Action Week This week's UEFA Champions League matches are being used as a platform to promote the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) Action Week. UEFA's partner in the fight against racism is calling on all stakeholders across European football to make a joint stand for equality and against racism and discrimination. This year, the FARE Action Week, which continues until 28 October, will feature an unprecedented 40 European countries involved in an united effort to rid the game of racism and exclusion. "We thank the clubs playing in the UEFA Champions League for their participation in the FARE Action Week, and captains for accepting to wear the unite against racism captain's armbands," said UEFA communications director William Gaillard. "The players' testimony of respect for diversity is much appreciated." Activities at UEFA Champions League matches will include children escorting players in unite against racism T-shirts, tannoy announcements, the "No to Racism" giant screen TV spot and editorials in match programmes. Refereeing experiment UEFA President Michel Platini and General Secretary David Taylor were 'wired up' to follow the referees' communication as an experiment with five match officials was carried out at a UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying round mini-tournament in Slovenia. In addition to the match referee and two assistant referees on the touchline, two extra assistants were situated behind the goalline to focus on incidents that happen in the penalty area, such as fouls or misconduct. The tests followed approval of the test by football's lawmakers, the International Football Association Board, last spring. "It is very important to see this experiment at first hand, and I could not get closer than to stand behind the goal," said Mr Taylor. "What I have seen in this experiment has been very interesting and worthwhile." Only a Game? exhibition opens The Only A Game? exhibition opened its doors to the public on 11 October as the UEFA-driven project takes up residence in the World Museum Liverpool until 1 March. With admission free, the interactive exhibition invites visitors to plunge into the emotions of football, inspired by a selection of prestigious artefacts, trophies and memorabilia, covering in particular the last 50 years of European football. Only A Game? also charts the development of the European Community after the Treaty of Rome, in tandem with the growth of the European club competitions. UEFA first vice-president Şenes Erzik said: "The exhibition is a fantastic event to convey the message that football is a family, altogether, without discrimination."

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 11.10.2008
