MADISON BOARD OF EDUCATION Leslie Lajewski, Board President Mark Schwarz, Superintendent of Schools Heather Reddy, Vice President Eulalia Gillis, Acting Board Secretary PUBLIC MEETING MINUTES The Public Meeting of the Madison Board of Education, Morris County, New Jersey, was called to order by President Lajewski at 7:00 p.m. on May 14, 2019 in the Alice Perlaw Library Media Center of Madison High School, Ridgedale Avenue, Madison, NJ 1. CALL TO ORDER: Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Leslie Lajewski, President Heather Reddy, Vice-President, 7:52 p.m. Sarah Fischer Also Present: Johanna Habib 7:03 p.m. Mark Schwarz, Superintendent David Irwin, 7:03 p.m. Eulalia Gillis, Assistant Business Administrator Thomas Piskula 7:03 p.m. Isabel Machado, Board Attorney Pamela Yousey Frank Santora, Assistant Superintendent Pupil Services Abi Singh, Harding Representative 2. RECESS TO CLOSED SESSION Moved by Sarah Fischer, seconded by Pamela Yousey, to approve as follows: Resolved: that the Board of Education move into closed executive session for the purpose of discussing confidential student and personnel matters. It is anticipated that the Board will be in closed session for 0.5 hour and action may be taken in public session afterward. Discussion conducted in closed executive session shall be disclosed to the public to the extent permitted by law that making such matters public shall not be inconsistent with the Open Public Meeting Act. NOTICE OF MEETING In compliance with the Open Public Meetings Act, Chapter 231, Laws of New Jersey, 1975, notice of this meeting has been sent to the Madison Eagle, the Daily Record and has been posted in the Board of Education Office, the Borough Hall, the Madison Railroad Station, the YMCA, the Madison Library, all school buildings and on the district’s website. The public is invited to attend. This evening's meeting constitutes an official Public Meeting of the Board of Education. Action may be taken. If needed, the Board will convene into Executive Session to discuss matters permitted pursuant to NJSA 10:4-12. REPORT OF THE BOARD PRESIDENT – Mrs. Lajewski noted that the recording of the April 25, 2019 meeting is now available. 8. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC The meeting was open to the public at 7:55 p.m. There were no comments. 9. SUPERINTENDENT DISCUSSION ITEMS a. Superintendent Report - Mr. Schwarz thanked the Madison Education Foundation (MEF) for their sponsorship of the 5K. Mr. Schwarz honored Karen Woo with the leadership award. Mr. Schwarz noted that there is a dinner to honor retirees on May 9th. Mr. Schwarz thanked all the parents and students who took the time to participate in the survey. Mr. Schwarz introduced Christine Internicola, presented for Assistant Vice Principal at the High School. b. Education Report – Mr. Ross noted that the Madison High School Production of “Brightstar” received 11 Papermill Playhouse Rising Awards. c. Technology Report – Mr. LaPierre noted that NJSLA testing is going well and NJSmart reporting continues into August. Mr. LaPierre is working with the High School and Junior School on graduation preparations. Mr. LaPierre also reported that the calendar has been updated and all the schools are color coded so all activities can be seen. Mr. LaPierre also noted that video recording and Board Software will be available for training over the summer. d. Facilities Report – Mr. Zulla reported that the High School Auditorium has a temporary electrical supply ready for Megapalooza. Mr. Zulla also reported that the High School locker room project asbestos abatement phase 1 is completed and bathroom renovations are getting reviewed. Mr. Zulla commented that there is no money allocated for Air Conditioning this school year. Air conditioning will be provided for students with special needs over the summer and classrooms will be monitored over the summer. e. Finance Report 10. EDUCATION AGENDA – Discussion Items a.
