    The Springboks in East Africa: The role of 1 SA Survey Company (SAEC) in the East African Campaign of World War II, 1940-1941 Elri Liebenberg Department of Geography, University of South Africa Abstract. As a member of the British Commonwealth, South Africa was part of Britain’s war effort since September 1939. When Italy entered the War on the side of Germany on 10 June 1940, the Italian territories in East Africa comprised Abyssinia together with Eritrea, now part of Ethiopia, and Italian Somaliland, now part of the Somali Democratic Republic. Although pre-war plans did not anticipate that the SA Army would fight outside southern Africa, Italy’s involvement in north-east Africa made it inevitable that South African troops would be deployed to the new war frontier. The South African forces (commonly known in the media as “Springboks”) played a major role in the fall of Mussolini’s East African Empire. The war was fought under extreme physical circumstances, and it was especially the SAEC (South African Engineering Corps) which rendered invaluable ser- vices. By 1940 East Africa was still largely unmapped, and one of the SAEC units, 1 SA Survey Company (initially named the1st Field Survey Company), supported by 60 Photographic Squadron of the South African Air Force, mapped large parts of the war zone and provided essential military intelli- gence. This paper deals with the formation and subsequent deployment of 1 SA Survey Company in Kenya, Abyssinia and Somaliland, as well as the achie- vements of its various sections. The maps which were produced, are analy- sed against the background of the available source material and prevailing circumstances.

They were: • Kenya; • Uganda; • British Somaliland; • Nyasaland (now Malawi); • Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia); • Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In the Great War, a long campaign had been fought in German East Africa, and following the Armistice, that country was incorporated into the British Empire as Tanganyika (now Tanzania). Between the two world wars, responsibility for the Army in the colonies of East Africa was devolved to the individual colonies themselves. The various Army regiments in the colonies were amalgamated into the King’s African Rifles in 1902, which after the Great War was reduced to six Regular battalions.

    From http://www.rhodesia.nl/sadfhist.htm. World War II (1939-1945) The outbreak of war in September 1939 found South Africa with a very small and ill-equipped Defence Force. Permanent Force strength stood at just 352 officers and 5,033 other ranks. Other administrative changes in 1937 included plans for the further extension and improvement of the ranks, while the ACF comprised only 918 officers and 12,572 other ranks. Once the decision to enter the war had been taken, the first priority was to make arrangements for a greatly expanded UDF needed to sustain South Africa's war effort. In September 1939 ACF units were authorized to accept volunteers (in addition to those in the age group 17 to 21 ) for the duration of the war. In February 1940 the ACF was reorganized on a totally voluntary basis as a result of strong opposition from a section of the nation that did not favour the Union's participation in the war. Soldiers willing to serve anywhere in Africa took the Africa Oath and were issued with a strip of orange cloth (the orange flash) which was worn at the outer aspect of the shoulder strap. Despite an initial shortage of equipment, the recruitment campaign for the reorganized ACF proceeded very satisfactorily, and within a short period three divisions had been established. These included 1 SA Division under Maj Gen G.E. Brink, comprising 1, 2 and 5 Brigades; 2 SA Division consisting of 3, 4 and 6 Brigades under Maj Gen l.P. de Villiers, and 3 SA Division comprising the reserve brigades and commanded by Maj Gen M.

  • Operation Crusader
    DESERT WAR PART FOUR: OPERATION CRUSADER DATE: NOVEMBER 18 – DECEMBER 30 1941 Operation Crusader was conducted by the British Eighth Army against Axis forces in North Africa between November 18 and December 30 1941. The operation was intended to relieve the 1941 Siege of Tobruk; the Eighth Army tried to destroy the Axis armored force before advancing its infantry. The plan failed when, after a number of inconclusive engagements, the British 7th Armoured Division was defeated by the Afrika Korps at Sidi Rezegh. Lieutenant General Erwin Rommel ordered German armored divisions to Axis fortress positions on the Egyptian border but failed to find the main body of the Allied infantry, which had bypassed the fortresses and headed for Tobruk. Rommel had to withdraw from the frontier to Tobruk and achieved some tactical success in costly fighting. The need to preserve his remaining forces from destruction prompted Rommel to withdraw his army to the defensive line at Gazala, west of Tobruk and then all the way back to El Agheila. It was the first victory over the German ground forces by British forces in the war. PRELUDE Following the costly failure of Operation Battleaxe, General Archibald Wavell was relieved as Commander-in-Chief Middle East Command and replaced by General Claude Auchinleck. The Western Desert Force was reorganized and renamed the Eighth Army under the command of Lieutenant General Alan Cunningham, who was later replaced by Lieutenant General Neil Ritchie. The Eighth Army comprised two Corps: XXX Corps under Lieutenant General Willoughby Norrie and XIII Corps under Lieutenant General Reade Godwin-Austen.

    28 February 2018 [CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS – PALESTINE, TRANS-JORDAN & SYRIA] Chronology of Events – Palestine, Trans-Jordan and Syria 1915 January German led Ottoman (Turkish) forces invade the Sinai Peninsula with the aim of capturing the Suez Canal. They are held, and eventually in 1916 pushed back out of Sinai into Palestine. 1916 March The last of a series of ten letters between HUSSEIN bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca, and the British High Commissioner in Egypt (McMAHON) affirms the U.K. commitment to recognise Arab independence after the Great War in exchange for Arab support in the war against the Ottoman Empire, and the launching of an Arab revolt against Turkish occupation of Mespotamia, Syria, Trans-Jordan and Palestine. 16 May The U.K. and France sign the SYKES – PICOT Agreement, which includes the then Russian Empire, apportioning spheres of influence over Turkey, Palestine and Western Persia when the Ottoman Empire was defeated in the war. The U.K. would have control of a coastal strip of Palestine, including the ports of Haifa and Acre, up to the River Jordan, and southern Iraq from Basra up to Baghdad along the two main rivers of the region (the Euphrates and Tigris). France was to gain control of south-eastern Turkey, Syria and Lebanon, and Russia Istanbul, the Turkish Straits, and Armenia. The Arab peoples were excluded from this agreement, as were any Jewish representatives. 1917 October – November British forces defeat the Turkish Army at the Third Battle of Gaza, leading to a large scale retreat by Turkish forces. 9 November The letter sent by Foreign Secretary of the U.K.

    The Desert Generals The Desert Generals Introduction In 1960 the historian Correlli Barnett published The Desert Generals in which he had the temerity to challenge the all-pervasive cult of Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein by re-evaluating the roles of Montgomery’s sacked predecessors in the North African theatre, including both Richard O’Connor, who drove the Italians from Cyrenaica in late 1940 and early 1941, and Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck (whom he pointedly described as ‘The Victor of Alamein’), who forced Rommel, ‘the Desert Fox’, to a halt at the First Battle of El Alamein, only to be dismissed by Churchill for his pains. This publication takes its title from Barnett’s book but its purpose is rather different. Barnett’s book offered a comprehensive account of the campaign in the Western Desert between 1940 and 1943 but this work has no such aspiration. Secondly, Barnett examined the contribution of five commanders to the war in the Western Desert : General Sir Richard O’Connor, General Sir Alan Cunningham, General Sir Neil Ritchie, Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck and Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. This work considers the contribution of only three. Two of the five – Auchinleck and Montgomery – were of Ulster-Scots stock and were proud of their Ulster ancestry. A third, Richard O’Connor could be regarded as ‘Scotch-Irish’ in the sense that his father was Irish and his mother was Scottish. Furthermore, O’Connor’s father was a major in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, an Ulster regiment whose regimental depot was in Armagh and whose traditional recruiting area was Counties Armagh, Cavan and Monaghan.

The nature and impact of this resistance is reconsidered by highlighting aspects of its role in ‘redefining Ethiopia’, its internal policy and its position in the global community after the start of the Second World War. The resistance movement was based on the ideals of restoring national independence and preserving cultural identity. There is also discussion of the reasons for the abrupt end to the resistance – mainly due to an external intervening factor (the British army) and the defeat of Italy – which prevented the challenge posed by the resistance movement and its incipient ideas of political reform being taken up seriously by the post-war imperial regime. Introduction In 1935, Ethiopia, until that time a traditional polity with a predominantly feudal political system, was invaded by the industrialized nation of Italy under the Fascist regime of Benito Mussolini.
