    L’INVITATION AU VOYAGE Sarah Buckner, Cui Jie, Cordula Ditz, Almut Heise, Hannah Höch, Leiko Ikemura, Tala Madani, Isa Melsheimer, Sojourner Truth Parsons, Paula Rego, Shahzia Sikander, Tsai Yi-Ting, and Yeesookyung April 28 — June 27, 2021 Esther Schipper is pleased to announce L’Invitation au voyage, presenting an exhibition of painting on the long history of travelling in your imagination, through fantasy or dreams, and ideas of the body as site of projection, conduit and personal discovery. At a time when travel in real life has become fraught and the ease, even recklessness, with which we took this liberty for granted has come into question, this exhibition—its title, L’Invitation au voyage is taken from a poem from Charles Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal—invokes the freedom of imaginary travel. The poem, in which the author invites his mistress to travel with him in their imagination, suggests a parallel between Flemish painting, the landscape of the Netherlands, and his lover’s body. Its famous closing lines gave the title to Henri Matisse’s 1904 painting: Là, tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté, Luxe, calme et volupté. L’Invitation au voyage spans multiple generations and artistic approaches, inspired, influenced, and expanding on representations of dream and fantasy. Beginning with pioneering avant-gardist Hannah Höch, and established figures such as Paula Rego, Almut Heise, Leiko Ikemura, and Yeesookyung, the exhibition continues into the practices of younger generations with works by Sarah Buckner, Cui Jie, Cordula Ditz, Tala Madani, Isa Melsheimer, Sojourner Truth Parsons, Shahzia Sikander, and Tsai Yi-Ting.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Leiko Ikemura: Unknown Voices Feb 4 – March 11, 2017 Opening reception: Feb 4 / 5-7pm Rena Bransten Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition from internationally celebrated artist Leiko Ikemura. The exhibition will include paintings and sculptures examining the fragility and vulnerability of the human state. Throughout her almost four-decade career, Ikemura has continued to explore ideas of alienation and fragmentation, fitting for an artist who left her native Japan at a young age for Europe in search of a less constrictive environment. Walking into an exhibition of Ikemura’s work is to be invited into another world. Her soft, dream-like paintings, a combination of highly diluted paints and jute canvasses, and her expressive ceramic sculpture, convey a world in which humans and nature meld fluidly, and a dramatic eroticism permeates the work. Ikemura’s universe is a unique one, informed by Japanese traditional art and Eastern notions of ghosts and spirits inhabiting all things, as seen in her supernatural interpretation of landscape elements, while also being influenced by European iconography from her studies in Spain. While Ikemura demonstrates a great love for the natural world, there is perhaps a more ominous note. A lying sculpture of two embracing, headless female figures is at the center of the gallery space on a low pedestal. The figures are almost identical, and the embrace so close and tender the bodies began to meld. The sculpture is soft, delicate, childlike, but the dismemberment and hollowness lends itself to something more sinister. Born in Tsu, Japan, Leiko Ikemura immigrated to Europe at age twenty-one, landing first in Spain where she studied literature and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville.

    LeiKO IKemURA Leiko Ikemura Grenzenlose, volle und umhüllende Leere Überblickt man die Zeichnungen (und auch die Skulpturen) von Leiko Ikemura, die in knapp dreis- sig Jahren entstanden sind, so fällt das eigenwillig geschaffene Universum auf. Es ist besetzt von Zeichen, nicht eindeutig definierten Objekten, erkennbaren Dingen wie Fliegern, Schiffen, Pflanzen, Tieren, bevorzugt Katzen, Mischwesen, Gesichtern, Masken und immer wieder Mädchen. Manchmal vermischen sie sich, sei es in der Bewegung, im Spiel, im Tanz und Taumel oder im Kampf. Dann wieder verharren sie im ruhenden Sein. Allem und allen gemeinsam ist aber ihr Schweben in einem Raum, der letztlich nicht zu fassen ist. Er ist durch alle Schaffensperioden hindurch unbestimmt und schon gar nicht begrenzt und suggeriert dennoch so etwas wie eine umhüllende Leere. Was ist Leere? Dazu liesse sich viel schreiben. Ein Aspekt sei hier angedeutet. Hui-Neng (Wei-Lang), chinesischer Patriarch (638–713), spielte eine entscheidende Rolle für die endgültige Gestaltung des Zen. Er schrieb: «Gelehrte Versammlung, die grenzenlose Leere des Universums ist fähig, Myriaden von Dingen verschiedener Art und Gestalt in sich zu vereinigen, wie Sonne, Mond, Sterne, Flüsse, Welten, Quellen, Bäche, Gebüsche, Wälder, gute und schlechte Menschen, Güte und Bosheit, die Welt der Götter, Höllen, Ozeane und die höchsten Berggipfel. Fact Sheet Press Release Dance at Museum Folkwang: The Global Groove Exhibition presents 120 Years of Dance and Art History Essen, 12 August 2021 – From 13 August to 14 November 2021 Museum Folkwang is devoting a major interdisciplinary exhibition to dance and its links to the fine arts, fashion design and performance art: Global Groove. Art, Dance, Performance and Protest looks back across 120 years of dance and art history, and beyond Europe and North America to Asia. The focus is on those trailblazing moments when artists from Western and (South) East Asian societies meet and new forms of artistic expression arise. From the early performances by Asian dancers in Europe around 1900 to the pioneers of Modern Dance, and on to the first Happenings by Japanese Butoh dancers, the Global Groove exhibition explores a West-East cultural history of contact – right up to contemporary collaborations. The linkages between the Western and Eastern avant-gardes are portrayed using the history of contact between choreographers, dancers, artists and intellectuals from Europe, the United States, and Asia. A prologue and six chapters highlight the power of dance to stimulate social developments. On show are over 300 exhibits by more than 80 different artists, amongst them John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Leiko Ikemura, Rei Kawakubo, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, William Klein, Harald Kreutzberg, Isamu Noguchi, Kazuo Ohno, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Auguste Rodin, Ulrike Rosenbach, Sonia Khurana, and Mary Wigman.

Juli, 2021 Vernissage: 18. Juni, 17:00 – 20:00 Uhr Die Galerie Peter Kilchmann freut sich die erste Einzelausstellung von Leiko Ikemura in der Galerie an der Rämistrasse zu präsentieren. Leiko Ikemura wurde in Tsu, Präfektur Mie, Japan geboren und wanderte 1973 nach Europa aus. Seit 1990 lebt und arbeitet die japanisch-schweizerische Doppelbürgerin in Berlin und Köln. Gegenstand der Ausstellung werden vier Werkgruppen sein, welche das umfangreiche Œuvre der Künstlerin sowohl in seiner konzeptuellen, als auch in seiner technischen Vielfalt wiederspiegeln und weiterentwickeln. Jeder der fünf Ausstellungsräume ist einem Werkzyklus gewidmet und wahrt seinen eigenen, intimen Charakter, obgleich die Serien aufeinander verweisen und poetische Parallelen bilden. Gezeigt werden Gemälde und Malereien auf Papier im Mittel- und Kleinformat, eine neue Skulpturengruppe aus Glas sowie eine Installation mit Video-Projektion. Das Werk von Leiko Ikemura ist seit Beginn ihres künstlerischen Schaffens eng mit ihrer persönlichen Reise und den verschiedenen Stationen ihres Lebens verwoben. Prägende Erinnerungen aus ihrem Heimatland Japan finden ebenso Einklang wie die Eindrücke aus ihren frühen Aufenthalten in Spanien und der Schweiz in den 1970er und 80er Jahren, die sie bis heute begleiten. Die intime Metamorphose eines lebenslangen Malprozesses manifestiert sich in Landschaften, in der Mensch und Natur miteinander verschmelzen, amorphen Formen und hybriden Fabelwesen in kontinuierlicher Transformation. Beim Eintreten in die Galerie taucht der Betrachter ein in die Welt der Girls, die seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre für die Malerei von Leiko Ikemura charakteristisch sind.

    JEAN-CHARLES BLAIS – LEIKO IKEMURA 7 November 2020 - 9 January 2021 Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of the artists Jean-Charles Blais (France) and Leiko Ikemura (Germany). Each of these two artists are well known and sought after for their unique stories. This is the first time these artists will be exhibited together. JEAN-CHARLES BLAIS In the South of France, Jean-Charles Blais continued his exploration of bold abstracted forms, turning progressively into figures, painted on thick layers of large billboard posters. The densely layered posters convey a sense of timelessness, playing with the viewer's subconscious, on emotional, visual, and physical levels. The comparison of works from different periods, which simultaneously work on different levels, is a common practice in the work of Jean Charles Blais. His work is informed by the diverse application of the medium, by using the couture as drawing or painting. With the help of digital media, billboards and other graphics emerge. The new works shown at the gallery fit into his figurative repertoire, whose fascination lies in the various layers of paper. It seems that the memory of forgotten forms, which were present in early works from the 80s, have been rediscovered. The polysemy arises through incessant metamorphoses, which play with the staging of the body and ambiguity. Forms are created, which arise from the concurrence of depth and surface – modern, unique, consistent and elusive. One looks for the empty forms, which emerge as memories of an absent body only to immediately disappear again. Jean-Charles Blais was born in1956 in Nantes.

    PRESS RELEASE BASEL | JUNE 16 | 2019 The 2019 edition of Art Basel attracted a truly global audience, catalyzing excellent sales at all levels • The 2019 edition of Art Basel closed on Sunday, June 16, 2019, amid reports of buoyant sales to private collections and institutions by galleries across all market sectors • The fair attracted collectors from over 80 countries and an overall attendance of 93,000 • Art Basel presented ‘Aggregate’ (2017-2019) by Alexandra Pirici on Messeplatz to great acclaim • A new sliding-scale pricing system was successfully introduced, providing additional support for smaller and mid-size galleries • The show, whose Lead Partner is UBS, took place at Messe Basel from June 13 to June 16, 2019 Art Basel brought together 290 premier galleries, presenting works ranging from early 20th century Modern art to the most contemporary pieces.
