Getting used to new places is often a challenge--especially when the trip is long, and we are tired. But what a treat awaited us! The accommodations were comparable to com- fortable motel rooms, which were pleasantly decorated, and most important, with com- fortable beds. The staff was helpful and the performance space, with comfortable chairs, added to the musical atmosphere. Imagine all of this, plus the heated pool and beautiful settings, and add the weekend performers--John Roberts, Lisa Preston, George Ward, Mark Gilston and Erica Weiss, and we are all in for a treat. There are lots of places perfect for making our own music as well. There is still room, so sign up quickly. See the flyer for more details. See the flyer in the centerfold. Presents Peter Ostroushko in concert with Arkan Friday 2 June ‘06, 7:30 p.m. At the Community Church 40 E. 35 St (upstairs) between Park & Madison, Manhattan Free to members.

Peter Ostroushko is one of the finest mandolin and fiddle players in acoustic music. His tours have taken him to clubs, performing arts centers, music festivals and theatres across North America and Europe, and he has earned an international reputation as a versatile, dazzling master of instrumentation and composition. He is a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion.

Peter plays a rich ethnic mix, at the heart of which is his Ukrainian heritage. His term for his gumbo of musical styles is “slüz düz,” a phrase borrowed from his mother, meaning, roughly, “over the edge” or “off his rocker.” Arkan (Arkadiy Yushin), from Minsk, Belarus, is a professional recording and performance musician, composer, and guitar multistylist, as well as a private teacher of guitar, theory and advanced improvisational tech- niques.

Contribution: $20; CD*NY members $18; seniors/student $12; kids under 12 $8. Free to members. Information: (212) 957-8386

Socialites? Sociologists? Social Workers? Actually what our club wants are SOCIAL EVENT HOSTS! Those are members who are ready, willing, and able to host community sings, song circles, pub nights, singing parties, picnics, days out in the park, and all sorts of other fun events. These can be one shot affairs, they can be occasional events, or they can be ongoing events. Being a host requires a little bit of effort and a little bit of patience, and perhaps a little outlay of money (and perhaps not). But the rewards will be enormous, by which we mean the satisfaction which comes from the sharing of music and friendship. If you have even the slightest inkling that you are up to the task of being a social event host, please contact us by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 1-718-786-1533. We will discuss the particulars, including the type of event, date, time, place, and what sup- port you need from the club. We will then present your idea to the Executive Board for its approval, which is required for an event to carry club sponsorship. Once the Board approves, the event will be listed in the New York Pinewoods newsletter. That's not so hard, is it? So who wants to step up first? --- Marilyn & Stephen Suffet, Social Co-Chairs Folk Fone Help Wanted We need additional people to record folk fone when we get it going again. You need to be comfortable using a computer and able to get into the Club office at your conve- nience. We work on a rotating schedule and each person records about once every 3 weeks. Contact Don Wade, , 718-426-8555. - 8 - CD Review "Toby Fagenson: The Parody Man" No Pinewoods Club weekend is complete without the warm presence and great songs (funny AND serious) of Toby Fagenson. He does write the greatest parodies, and here are 12 of them (plus 6 more short ones). All the words are Toby's, and he's the principal performer, along with a supporting cast of backup singers and instrumentalists. There's the lively, toe-tapping "Picasso" (originally "Chicago"); "Starbucks" ("Stardust"); the startling, funny, irre- sistible "P.O.T.T." ("Puttin on the Ritz"); and "The R&H Factor" (comparing the singable tunes of Rodgers to the travails of getting through those dif- ficult numbers in "West Side Story"). Then of course there's "Slowing Down to Lethargy" ("Old Maui"), ribbing those singers who stretch the music out just to hear their own voices. And many more -- sing- ing, strumming, whistling, and even the occasional trumpet. Music by Gershwin, Bernstein, Berlin, Rodgers, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Buffett, Hoagy Carmichael, and others. On Sat., May 20, at 9pm , there will be a release party for the CD at 22 Below, Gustavus Adolphus Church on E. 22nd St. (Between Lex. And Third Aves.) And on Sunday, May 21, two songs from the CD will be played on Bob Sherman's "Woody's Children," pro- gram over WFUV (90.7 Fm.) The CD is $17 (including shipping) from: Toby Fagenson, 301 E. 66th St, Apt 2K, NY NY 10021-6206; 212-861-7019. Do also check out his earlier recordings, which include a variety of his other wonderful songs -- excellent serious numbers AND various very funy (non-parody) songs. Catch him in person, at a weekend or concert. ——Sol Weber

CHANGE AT JAMAICA FAREWELL – BOB WEINSTEIN

One fine day I made my way To see my wife and family in Riverhead: Boarded a car on the LIRR. “You must change at Jamaica,” the conductor said.

(chorus:) But I’m sad to say I lost my way; I’ve been riding for many a day. Been trav’ling through towns whose names are awful strange ‘Cause when I reached Jamaica I forgot to change. The train pulled out and I had my doubts As through Locust Manor station we did run, And then I knew that I was through When the conductor said, “Next station Laurelton.”

(chorus) At Valley Stream I began to scream As I knew that night I’d never get to bed; I nearly died when the conductor cried, “Here’s where you change for the shuttle to West Hempstead.”

(chorus) Then at a glance I saw my chance: That train across the track might get me home all right: With its fine bar and its parlor car It lurched majestically into the looming night.

(chorus)

But, as I feared, town names grew weird: Massapequa, Copiague, Blue Point, Patchogue; And then, alas! the coup de grace: The engine died and now I’m stranded here in Quogue.

(chorus) My story’s through, and I hope that you Will not forget my example: my advice, don’t spurn: Whene’er you are on the LIRR, You must change at Jamaica, or you’ll ne’er return.

You’ll be sad to say you lost your way; You’ll be riding for many a day. You’ll travel through towns whose names are awful strange If when you reach Jamaica you forget to change.

The Club has an immediate need for more appropriate office space. We need space for a desk (with our computer and phone), file cabinet and 2 storage cabinets in a place that is accessible evenings, nights and weekends so our volunteers can get there after their “day” jobs. We also need access to an area that we can use 2 evenings a month for our board meetings (20 people) and our newsletter mailings. We’re looking for a Manhattan loca- tion with no cats; something shared with another nonprofit might be ideal. Iif you have any concrete information, contact Don Wade, 718-426-8555, or e-mail . - 18 - This list gives more detailed information for locations listed in the chronological Events Listings.
