5 Club Atlético de Madrid - SL Benfica Wednesday 30 September 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Estadio Vicente Calderón, Madrid Match background

Club Atlético de Madrid and SL Benfica meet for the first time on the competitive stage with both teams having made winning starts in UEFA Champions League Group C. Match background Atlético • The 2014 beaten finalists began their sixth group stage campaign with a 2-0 victory away to Galatasaray AŞ • Atlético Madrid are taking part in the competition for the third year in a row – the first time they have achieved that feat. • They put together four successive home victories in last season's tournament, winning their three group games in Madrid with a 10-0 aggregate score. They overcame 1-0 at home in the round of 16 to draw the tie 1-1 on aggregate, winning the ensuing penalty shoot-out 3-2. • The Rojiblancos then drew 0-0 at home to city rivals Real Madrid CF in the quarter-finals before bowing out 1-0 on aggregate. • They have won 21 of their last 24 European matches at the Vicente Calderón. The only defeat was a 2-0 reverse to FC Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 in February 2013. • Atlético had success the last time they met opponents from Portugal, defeating FC Porto home (2-0) and away (2-1) in the 2013/14 group stage. Atlético's overall home record against Portuguese opposition is W5 D2 L1. Benfica • Competing in their 11th UEFA Champions League group stage, Benfica began with a 2-0 home victory over newcomers FC Astana. • The Portuguese champions lost two of their away games in last term's group stage and drew the other 0-0. They finished fourth in Group C with five points. • Those two defeats are the only reverses in Benfica's last eight European away fixtures. • In only one of their last seven UEFA Champions League campaigns (2011/12) have the Eagles qualified for the knockout rounds. That year Chelsea FC beat them 3-1 overall in the quarter-finals. • Benfica's last assignment with Spanish opponents came in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League final when they drew 0-0 with Sevilla FC in Turin, losing 4-2 on penalties. • It was the 23rd time they had faced Spanish sides in Europe with the record W5 D8 L10. They have not won in the last 15 matches (D7 L8) since a 2-1 victory at Sevilla's city rivals Real Betis Balompié on 29 September 1982. • Their two European Champion Clubs' Cup triumphs, in 1961 and 1962, both came against Spanish teams, however – FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Coach and player links • Jan Oblak helped Benfica win the Portuguese league and cup double in 2013/14 and played the full 120 minutes against Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League final. • Tiago made 75 appearances for Benfica between 2002 and 2004, scoring 19 times. • Raúl Jiménez (2014/15 – 21 apps, one goal), Eduardo Salvio (2010–12 – 44 apps, five goals), (2011 – 11 apps), Sílvio (2011/12 – 10 apps) all joined Benfica after spells with Atlético.

• Sílvio is in his third season at Benfica on loan from Atlético. • Ederson was a goalkeeping colleague of Jan Oblak at Rio Ave FC in 2012/13. • Jonas netted twice against Atlético in eight games for Valencia CF while Eliseu scored once against them during stints with Málaga CF and Real Zaragoza. • Jackson Martínez faced Benfica nine times with Porto, scoring three goals. • International team-mates: Nicolás Gaitán & Ángel Correa (Argentina) Tiago & André Almeida, Eliseu, Pizzi (Portugal) Filipe Luís & Luisão, Júlio César (Brazil 2009–11) Filipe Luís & Talisca (Brazil) Match facts

11 Club Atlético de Madrid - SL Benfica Wednesday 30 September 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Estadio Vicente Calderón, Madrid Head coach Diego Simeone Date of birth: 28 April 1970 Nationality: Argentinian Playing career: CA Vélez Sarsfield, AC Pisa, Sevilla FC, Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Internazionale Milano, SS Lazio, Club Atlético de Madrid, Racing Club Coaching career: Racing Club, Club Estudiantes de la Plata, CA River Plate, CA San Lorenzo, Calcio Catania, Racing Club, Club Atlético de Madrid • Launched career as a combative midfielder with Vélez Sarsfield and was a full Argentinian international at 18, making debut in a July 1988 friendly against Australia; went on to play in three FIFA World Cups and retired as Argentina's most-capped player (106 appearances, 11 goals). Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later he left for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for one season – alongside Diego Maradona. • Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours to add to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina. • Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italia double in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a second spell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club. • Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and River Plate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointment in December 2011 at Atlético. • Led Atletico to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey final triumph over Real Madrid CF in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off FC Barcelona and Madrid to win their first league title since 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Simeone won the Supercopa de España at the start of the next season, which ended with Atlético finishing third in the Liga. Rui Vitória Date of birth: 16 April 1970 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: Fanhões, UD Vilafranquense, Seixal Clube 1925, Casa Pia AC, GD Alcochetense Coaching career: UD Vilafranquense, SL Benfica (Under-19), CD Fátima, FC Paços de Ferreira, Vitória SC, SL Benfica • Born in Alverca do Ribatejo, in the Lisbon district, Rui Vitória spent the majority of his playing career as a midfielder with clubs from the Portuguese capital's metropolitan area. • Always plied his trade in the lower divisions and was a mainstay at Vilafranquense for nine seasons. After hanging up his boots at 32 in the middle of 2002/03, he began his coaching career immediately at the club, while simultaneously working as a PE teacher. • His first encounter with Benfica came two seasons later, as he led the Eagles' Under-19 setup for two years, a period which began his steady rise in Portuguese football. The first step was taken at Fátima in 2006, where his debut season was marked by promotion to the second division followed by immediate relegation, a journey repeated in the next two campaigns. • His good work led him to Paços de Ferreira in the top division. The first season ended with a seventh-place finish in the Liga and defeat by Benfica in the 2010/11 League Cup final. Sacked three games into the following season but only took a week to find a new employer, in the shape of Guimarães. • In four seasons at the helm of the Minho outfit, he made his name by building competitive sides with few resources, as well as detecting and developing young talents. His highlight was victory over Benfica in the 2012/13 Portuguese Cup final, only the second trophy in the club's history. On 15 June 2015, he was announced as Benfica's new coach on a three-year contract.
