2 CAROL The Infant King

Sing ! Sing lullaby! Lullaby baby, now reclining, Lullaby baby, now a-dozing, Sing lullaby! Sing lullaby! Hush, do not wake the Infant King. Hush, do not wake the Infant King. Angels are watching, stars are shining Soon comes the cross, the nails, the piercing, Over the place where he is lying: Then in the grave at last reposing: Sing lullaby! Sing lullaby!

Sing lullaby! Sing lullaby! Lullaby baby, now a-sleeping, Lullaby! is the babe a-waking? Sing lullaby! Sing lullaby! Hush, do not wake the Infant King. Hush, do not stir the Infant King. Soon will come sorrow with the morning, Dreaming of Easter, gladsome morning, Soon will come bitter grief and weeping: Conquering Death, its bondage breaking: Sing lullaby! Sing lullaby!

CAROL Sussex Carol

On Christmas night all Christians sing, When sin departs before his grace, To hear the news the angels bring— Then life and health come in its place; News of great joy, news of great mirth, Angels and men with joy may sing, News of our merciful King’s birth. All for to see the newborn King.

Then why should men on earth be so sad, All out of darkness we have light, Since our Redeemer made us glad, Which made the angels sing this night: When from our sin he set us free, “Glory to God and peace to men, All for to gain our liberty? Now and for evermore. Amen.”

Text & music: English traditional carol, arr. David Willcocks (b. 1919)

3 HYMN It came upon the midnight clear (no. 89)

1. 3. It came upon the midnight clear, Yet with the woes of sin and strife that glorious song of old, the world has suffered long; from angels bending near the earth beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled to touch their harps of gold: two thousand years of wrong; “Peace on the earth, good will to men, and warring humankind hears not from heaven’s all-gracious King.” the tidings which they bring; The world in solemn stillness lay O hush the noise and cease your strife to hear the angels sing. and hear the angels sing!

2. 4. Still through the cloven skies they come For lo! the days are hastening on, with peaceful wings unfurled, by prophets seen of old, and still their heavenly music floats when with the ever-circling years o’er all the weary world; shall come the time foretold, above its sad and lowly plains when peace shall over all the earth they bend on hovering wing, its ancient splendors fling, and ever o’er its Babel-sounds and all the world give back the song the blessed angels sing. which now the angels sing.

CAROL in dulci jubilo

In dulci jubilo [In quiet joy] O Patris caritas [O father’s caring], Let us our homage show; O Nati lenitas [O newborn’s mildness]! Our heart’s joy reclineth Deeply were we stained In praesepio [in a manger] Per nostra crimina [by our crimes]; And like a bright star shineth, But thou hast for us gained Matris in gremio [in the mother’s lap]. Coelorum gaudia [heavenly joy]. Alpha es et O [You are Alpha and Omega]. O that we were there!

O Jesu parvule [O tiny Jesus]! Ubi sunt gaudia [where are joys], I yearn for thee alway! If that they be not there? Hear me, I beseech thee, There are angels singing O puer optime [O best of boys]! Nova cantica [new songs], My prayer let it reach thee, There the bells are ringing O Princeps gloriae [Prince of glory]! In Regis curia [at the King’s court]: Trahe me post te [Draw me to you]. O that we were there!

4 CAROL Threshold of Night

Who stands at my door in the storm and rain I will not go back for sorrow or pain, On the threshold of being? For my true love weeps within One who waits till you call him in And waits for my coming. From the empty night. Go back, my babe, to the vacant night Are you a stranger, out in the storm, For in this house dwell sin and hate Or has my enemy found me out On the verge of being. On the edge of being? I will not going back for hate or sin, I am no stranger who stands at the door I will not go back for sorrow or pain, Nor enemy come in the secret night, For my true love mourns within I am your child, in darkness and fear On the threshold of night. On the verge of being.

Go back, my child, to the rain and storm, For in this house there is sorrow and pain In the lonely night.

Amen.

¶ The People Sit THE WORD

THE FIRST LESSON Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted sentinels; all day and all night they shall never be silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it renowned throughout the earth. The LORD has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored; but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts. Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up an ensign over the peoples. The LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to daughter Zion, “See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.” They shall be called, “The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD”; and you shall be called, “Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.” Isaiah 62:6-12 NRSV The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GR ADUAL ¶ The choir sings the following refrain, then all repeat

To us a child is born; to us a Son is giv - en.

The Lord is King; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of the isles be glad. Clouds and darkness are round about him, righteousness and justice are the foun- dations of his throne. A fire goes before him and burns up his enemies on every side. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees it and is afraid. The moun- tains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the

8 whole earth. The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. Refrain

Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! Bow down before him, all you gods. Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O Lord. For you are the Lord, most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. The Lord loves those who hate evil; he preserves the lives of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Refrain

Light has sprung up for the righteous, and joyful gladness for those who are true- hearted. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, and give thanks to his holy Name. Refrain Psalm 97

THE SECOND LESSON When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:4-7 NRSV The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HYMN AT THE SEQUENCE Angels we have heard on high (no. 96)

1. 3. Angels we have heard on high, Come to Bethlehem and see singing sweetly through the night, him whose birth the angels sing; and the mountains in reply come, adore on bended knee echoing their brave delight. Christ, the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

2. 4. Shepherds, why this jubilee? See him in a manger laid Why these songs of happy cheer? whom the angels praise above; What great brightness did you see? Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, What glad tidings did you hear? while we raise our hearts in love. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

9 The Holy X Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the David called Beth- lehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Luke 2:1-20 NRSV The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

10 We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. X We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE ¶ The Intercessor will offer prayers for the Church & its mission, the welfare of the world, concerns of the local community, those who suffer or are in pain, and the X departed.

¶ After each intercession, Child of Mary, Holy God, Hear our prayer.

¶ The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. The People respond Amen.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. ¶ The People stand or kneel Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

¶ The Celebrant concludes with an X absolution. The People respond Amen.

11 The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

¶ The People reconcile with their neighbors and greet one another in the name of the Lord.

ANTHEM AT THE OFFERTORY What Sweeter Music

What sweeter music can we bring We see him come, and know him ours, Than a carol, for to sing Who, with his sunshine and his showers, The birth of this our heavenly King? Turns all the patient ground to flowers. Awake the voice! Awake the string! The darling of the world is come, And fit it is, we find a room Dark and dull night, fly hence away, To welcome him. The nobler part And give the honor to this day Of all the house here, is the heart. That sees December turned to May. Which we will give him; and bequeath Why does the chilling winter’s morn This holly, and this ivy wreath, Smile, like a field beset with corn? To do him honor, who’s our King, Or smell like a meadow newly shorn And Lord of all this reveling. Thus, on the sudden? Come and see The cause, why things thus fragrant be: What sweeter music can we bring ’Tis he is born, whose birth Than a carol, for to sing Gives life and luster, public mirth, The birth of this our heavenly King. To heaven, and the under-earth.

HYMN AT THE PRESENTATION In the bleak midwinter (no. 112)

1. 3. In the bleak midwinter, Angels and archangels frosty wind made moan, may have gathered there, earth stood hard as iron, cherubim and seraphim water like a stone; throngèd the air; snow had fallen, snow on snow, but his mother only, snow on snow, in her maiden bliss, in the bleak midwinter, worshiped the belovèd long ago. with a kiss.

2. 4. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, What can I give him, nor earth sustain; poor as I am? heaven and earth shall flee away If I were a shepherd, when he comes to reign: I would bring a lamb; in the bleak midwinter if I were a wise man, a stable-place sufficed I would do my part; the Lord God incarnate, yet what I can I give him- Jesus Christ. give my heart.

¶ The People stand or kneel. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

14 On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being X sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daugh- ters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

A - MEN.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us to- day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
