General Notes: Thomas Bayes and his family moved to Clinton Township then Lucas County Ohio now Fulton County Ohio. This is the township where I now live and includes part of the town of Wauseon, Ohio. Governor Lucas commissioned Thomas as the first Justice of the Peace 2 for Clinton Township. First House of Wauseon was built by Thomas Bayes, southwest of present Court House in 1835. Thomas Bayes Jr is given credit for being one of the founders of Wauseon. Wauseon was founded in 1854 by four young men with an eye towards the future commercial and industrial growth of this area, and this spirit has continued through 143 years of development. E. L. Barber and J. H. Sargent, young railway surveyors, knew that a depot would be built along the right of way west of Delta. In spite of the fact that the depot site wasn't definite, they, along with Nathnial Leggett and W. Hall, bought 160 acres from Thomas Bayes for $16 an acre. Being nearly five times what good land was selling for nearby, Mr.Bayes must have thought he had a good thing. At a time when most main streets were little more than narrow trails, the proprietors had a 100 ft. wide main street laid out. Even today it can handle most mass transportation. The east-west streets were named after species of trees found on the townsite, and the north-south ones were named after famous men. Eight foot sidewalks on the main street are another unusual feature. Frank H. Reighard1 then a county surveyor, asked E. L. Barber the reason and his answer was "The merchants wanted room to display their merchandise in front of their buildings. They couldn't use the public thoroughfare, so they built their buildings eight feet back of the property lines." Thomas married Anna (Mcmillen) WRIGHT? , daughter of Unknown WRIGHT and Unknown , about 1797. Anna was born on 31 Mar 1776 and died in 1836 in Holmes, Co. OH, at age 60. General Notes: Anna may have been a WRIGHT or possibly married first to a McMillen as the family reunion article states that Thomas and his brother John BAYES married sisters. John's 2nd wife. Jane McMillin was born in 1800 and her parents too young to have been Anna's parents. John's first wife was Agnes (Nancy Jane) Wright. Children from this marriage were: 20 M i. Robert BAYES died in As Infant. + 21 M ii. James BAYES was born on 28 Dec 1798 in Somerset, PA, died on 11 Apr 1882 in Salt Creek Twp, Holmes, Co. OH, at age 83, and was buried in Fredericksburg E.
