MAKING MEANING OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN ANCIENT CHRISTIAN SACRED LITERATURE JEANNIE K. BABB Project under the direction of Doctor Paul Holloway Sexual violence against women appears in many genres of literature sacred to ancient Christianity, from foundational myths in Genesis through apocalyptic symbolism in the Revelation, and on into the martyr stories used liturgically by the church. These passages have damaged women, men, church, and society when taken as normative or prescriptive passages about human behavior. Recontextualizing sexual violence against women as a literary trope allows us to consider its symbolic meaning in the text, while resisting that presumption that male domination and sexual violence are part of God’s plan for the church. This project involved analyzing selected passages featuring sexual violence against women, classifying the stories by genre, and considering the purpose of sexual violence in each text. Modern scholarship was considered along with analysis of the stories and comparison within and among the genres. Although each genre uses sexual violence against women differently, its meaning remains fairly consistent for a given genre. In the foundational myths of Genesis, rape serves an etiological or ethnological purpose, establishing relationships between tribes. Rape stories in Judges and 2 Samuel play off earlier use of sexual violence, but deploy it to advance political messages. In prophetic and apocalyptic literature, political entities are represented as women and threatened with sexual violence. In one variation (known as the marriage metaphor), Israel is depicted as the wayward wife of God whose downfall is the result of being unfaithful. In another version, a foreign city is feminized and raped.

Donaldson have missed how thoroughly sexual violence inundates his work. Rape, or the threat of rape, appears in nearly every novel and short story— the protagonist of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever (1977–2013), for example, assaults a young woman early in Lord Foul’s Bane (1977); fantasies of sexual violence obsess Castellan Lebbick in Mordant’s Need (1986–1987), and the first novel in the five-volume Gap (1991–1996) sequence easily surpasses both series in terms of sexual violence. Moreover, as my epigraph suggests, similes involving rape abound. These ubiquitous references to sexual violence can dismay even Donaldson’s most ardent proponents—fan blogger Gavrielle Perry, for example, bluntly calls them “pretty damn disturbing.” At the same time, Perry also considers Donaldson a “scrupulously non-sexist” writer, someone in whom feminists can find much to champion. UNIFIED ITALY, SOUTHERN WOMEN AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE: SITUATING THE SEXUAL ASSAULT TV “PRANK” AGAINST EMMA MARRONE WITHIN THE DYNAMICS OF CONTEMPORARY ITALY AS A SCOPIC REGIME Marcello Messina1 Teresa Di Somma2 ABSTRACT On 22 April 2017, while rehearsing a musical performance for talent show “Amici di Maria De Filippi”, female singer Emma Marrone was repeatedly molested and groped by a male dancer as part of a prank orchestrated by the TV team. During the broadcast, cast members and guest stars laughed at Marrone‟s irritated reactions to the “simulated” sexual assaults of the dancer. The episode was then normally broadcast and promoted as a hilarious prank. While totally partaking in the general indignation and outrage that this episode has brought about in international media and in national anti-abuse organisations, we want to focus on Marrone‟s positionality as a diasporic Southern Italian woman, which has largely gone overlooked in the diffused reactions to the episode. In this work, we proceed to unearth the often-silenced histories of mass rapes against Southern women committed during the Italian Unification period and in the final stages of World War II, in order to expose the exploitation of female bodies as military trophies, perpetrated by occupying (Italian and international) forces. We then situate the episode involving Emma Marrone and “Amici di Maria de Filippi” within the perverse dynamics of contemporary Italy as a scopic regime that claims continuity with these histories of racialised sexual violence. KEYWORDS: Unified Italy; Sexual violence; Scopic Regime; Southern women; Television.

This article discusses how male and female perception on the issue of sexual intent varies. Men tended to perceived non verbal cues such as eye contact and touching in a more sexual way then women. Also when alcohol is put into the mix, both men and women were more willing to blame the woman for any wrong doings even if her male counterpart was also drinking. The article also explains that men with high rape acceptance belief were more likely to blame women for being raped. The last finding from the study found that men who ranked high in viewing the world in more of a sexual manner was more likely to blame the victim for the rape. This article would be very important to my project because it point to how men and women perceive certain situations differently. Benson Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences Head of Department of Arts and Sciences *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This thesis interrogates feminist rhetoric of rape. As such, this project first investigates the history and rhetorical strategies of the rape reform movement, a decidedly feminist movement, before looking ahead to the burgeoning postfeminist discourse of “gray rape.” I recount the arguments of the rape reform movement and landmarks moments in the history of the movement as a watershed moment where the language used to describe rape changed in order to shift the perspective of rape as an assault that happens between strangers to an assault that more commonly exists between acquaintances, friends, and dates. I then look at the specific language created by the rape reform movement, the terms “acquaintance rape” and “date rape,” as feminist counterformulations of rape and the rhetorical dimensions of these terms. Finally, I look at the postfeminist discourse of “gray rape” as reiteration of rape myths, the “virgin”/“vamp” dichotomy, and the singular discourse of “stranger rape” and how this discourse, if left unchecked, is detrimental to serious public discussion about rape.

THE POWER OF CONSENT: AN EVALUATION OF PEER-BASED CONSENT PROGRAMMING IN SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION A Thesis Presented to The faculty of The College of Arts and Sciences Ohio University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation with Honors in Psychology by Phoenix R. Crane April 2017 2 THE POWER OF CONSENT Abstract The proposed honors thesis longitudinally evaluated two different consent education modules included in a peer-based alcohol education program to expand the research on evaluating the effectiveness of sexual assault prevention programs. The first module of consent defined consent as sober, verbal, and enthusiastic (SVE). The second consent module defined consent as fully conscious, acting freely, clear, and enthusiastic (F.A.C.E.). For this study, the SVE and F.A.C.E consent programs were incorporated into the alcohol education program and were compared to the alcohol program without any consent education, thus creating three measurable conditions. First-year student classrooms were randomly assigned to one of the three conditions. Our measures included students’ perpetration and victimization experiences, self-efficacy, knowledge of consent, ability to stop self-perpetration, and ability to communicate clearly about sex-related topics in preventing sexual assault. Results yielded no significant changes over time or across conditions as a function of consent education type. Keywords: sexual assault, consent, FACE, SVE, Ohio University, POWER/GAMMA 3 THE POWER OF CONSENT The POWER of Consent: An Evaluation of Peer-Based Consent Programming in Sexual Assault Prevention Sexual assault, defined as any form of sexual activity that happens without consent including rape, coercion, unwanted touching, voyeurism, exhibitionism, and harassment (Office of Women’s Health, 2015), is a problem on many college campuses.

  • The Potential Impact of Rape Culture on Juror Decision Making: Implications for Wrongful Acquittals in Sexual Assault Trials
HILDEBRAND & NAJDOWSKI 6/10/2015 10:31 PM THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF RAPE CULTURE ON JUROR DECISION MAKING: IMPLICATIONS FOR WRONGFUL ACQUITTALS IN SEXUAL ASSAULT TRIALS Meagen M. Hildebrand* & Cynthia J. Najdowski** ABSTRACT Feminist writers contend that Americans live in a culture that supports sexualized aggression and violence against women. This “rape culture” is reflected in our society by the pervasive endorsement of rape myths and sexual objectification of women, both of which are legitimized by everyday media. One potential consequence of living in a rape culture is that individuals may themselves come to endorse rape myths and sexually objectify women, and, in turn, perceive certain forms of sexual violence against women as defensible. This is concerning considering the significant role that laypeople play in administering justice in sexual assault cases, but research has yet to consider the impact rape culture may have on juror decision making. We review the concept of rape culture, explain the psychological process by which rape culture might influence juror decision making in sexual assault trials, review evidence for our hypotheses from the extant literature, and, finally, discuss future research directions and potential policy implications. I.
