How Gender, Pleasure, and Social Norms Produce A “Just Finish Already”: How the Grey Area of Sexual Consent Highlights Inequalities Inherent in Heterosexual Pleasure Shannon Russell-Miller A thesis submitted to the University of Ottawa in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa Ottawa, Ontario © Shannon Russell-Miller, Ottawa, Canada, 2020 Abstract This qualitative study examines young adults’ expectations and experiences of consent and pleasure which result in a grey area. Based on focus groups and one-on-one interviews with 18 to 25-year-old women and men, I explore various experiences of consensual sex ranging from clearly consensual and pleasurable, consensual yet mediocre experiences, and those which reflect a grey area of consent. Whereas best and simply mediocre sex are characterized by clear feelings of consent, the grey area involves sex that is felt as less than fully consensual but not quite as sexual assault. I apply theories of expectation states, compulsory heterosexuality, and sexual script theories to the findings of this research to argue that adherence to traditional gender norms of heterosexual behaviour lead to greater social importance given to men’s needs for sexual pleasure.   • Mate Guarding and the Evolution of Patriarchy
    It’s a Man’s World: Mate Guarding and the Evolution of Patriarchy During human evolution the prevention of cuckoldry has been an adaptive problem for the human male, solved in many other species by intensely guarding females during fertile periods. Signs of estrus in human females are much subtler than in many other species meaning that there is less certainty of the exact timing of the fertile period. This necessitates extended mate guarding which potentially reduces male fitness due to the loss of extra-pair fertilization opportunities and other fitness-compromising costs, such as reduction in the time spent acquiring status and resources. Patriarchy is a system of implicit and explicit rules of conduct, of power structures, and of belief systems that support male control over women’s reproduction and has existed for thousands of years. We examine the manifestations of patriarchy as a unique form of mate guarding which is able to function even in the absence of males. We explore historical and contemporary patriarchal practices such as rape, foot-binding, honor-killing and female genital mutilation and argue that males use patriarchy to increase the costs associated with female extra-pair copulation to increase their certainty of paternity. At the same time patriarchy functions to enforce in-pair childbearing by discouraging contraception and abortion. We propose that this form of control of females evolved to avoid an evolutionary trade-off between the benefits of monogamy and those of promiscuity for human males and that there has been selection on females for those compliant with patriarchy, who tended to have more surviving offspring.

    THE BIBLE & CRITICAL THEORY My Beloved is a Bass Line: Musical, De-colonial Interventions in Song Criticism and Sacred Erotic Discourse Heidi Epstein, University of Saskatchewan Abstract How might musical settings of the Song of Songs provide critical interventions in the politics of love? This case study builds a womanist intertextual matrix for the Song such that its amatory and horticultural language can be reinterpreted as irreducibly “de-colonial.” Reread through Chela Sandoval’s model of love, Alice Walker’s search for her foremothers’ and foresisters’ gardens, and Toni Morrison’s “commentary” on the Song (Beloved), the biblical text circulates de-colonial energies. And, given that music figures centrally in these womanists’ genealogies of love, a de-colonial reading of the Song mandates deconstruction of a subaltern musical archive within the Eurocentric discourse of sacred eroticism, a discourse that the Song sustains as an Ur-text. If the biblical female protagonist’s longing and seeking are reread as de-colonial and trickster-esque, she begets a subaltern musical family tree—audible today in the “Shulammitic” bass playing and protest singing of Meshell Ndegeocello.     MAKING MEANING OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN ANCIENT CHRISTIAN SACRED LITERATURE JEANNIE K. BABB Project under the direction of Doctor Paul Holloway Sexual violence against women appears in many genres of literature sacred to ancient Christianity, from foundational myths in Genesis through apocalyptic symbolism in the Revelation, and on into the martyr stories used liturgically by the church. These passages have damaged women, men, church, and society when taken as normative or prescriptive passages about human behavior. Recontextualizing sexual violence against women as a literary trope allows us to consider its symbolic meaning in the text, while resisting that presumption that male domination and sexual violence are part of God’s plan for the church. This project involved analyzing selected passages featuring sexual violence against women, classifying the stories by genre, and considering the purpose of sexual violence in each text. Modern scholarship was considered along with analysis of the stories and comparison within and among the genres. Although each genre uses sexual violence against women differently, its meaning remains fairly consistent for a given genre. In the foundational myths of Genesis, rape serves an etiological or ethnological purpose, establishing relationships between tribes. Rape stories in Judges and 2 Samuel play off earlier use of sexual violence, but deploy it to advance political messages. In prophetic and apocalyptic literature, political entities are represented as women and threatened with sexual violence. In one variation (known as the marriage metaphor), Israel is depicted as the wayward wife of God whose downfall is the result of being unfaithful. In another version, a foreign city is feminized and raped.

Donaldson have missed how thoroughly sexual violence inundates his work. Rape, or the threat of rape, appears in nearly every novel and short story— the protagonist of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever (1977–2013), for example, assaults a young woman early in Lord Foul’s Bane (1977); fantasies of sexual violence obsess Castellan Lebbick in Mordant’s Need (1986–1987), and the first novel in the five-volume Gap (1991–1996) sequence easily surpasses both series in terms of sexual violence. Moreover, as my epigraph suggests, similes involving rape abound. These ubiquitous references to sexual violence can dismay even Donaldson’s most ardent proponents—fan blogger Gavrielle Perry, for example, bluntly calls them “pretty damn disturbing.” At the same time, Perry also considers Donaldson a “scrupulously non-sexist” writer, someone in whom feminists can find much to champion. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the attitudes expressed toward the role of women in her novels cannot be neatly categorized as either feminist or anti-feminist but, rather, should be recognized as ambivalent. The terms "feminism" and "anti-feminism" have acquired political connotations that have little to do with the problems encountered by Charlotte Bronte and her heroines. Therefore, one aim of this paper is to make a distinction between the views of the activists of today's women's liberation move­ ment and the perspectives of the early Victorian feminists. In the l8UO's and l85O's, the established view of the nature of woman and her proper sphere was the traditional one. It was held that the ideal lady should be intellectually and sexually passive; her behavior toward her male superior should be submissive; her sphere should not extend outside the home. The traditionalists far out­ numbered the feminists, whose views were largely unsanctioned by the respectable Victorian middle-classes. The heroines of Jane Eyre, Shirley and Villette are all torn between the Imperatives of convention and the desire to fulfill individual needs.

    UNIFIED ITALY, SOUTHERN WOMEN AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE: SITUATING THE SEXUAL ASSAULT TV “PRANK” AGAINST EMMA MARRONE WITHIN THE DYNAMICS OF CONTEMPORARY ITALY AS A SCOPIC REGIME Marcello Messina1 Teresa Di Somma2 ABSTRACT On 22 April 2017, while rehearsing a musical performance for talent show “Amici di Maria De Filippi”, female singer Emma Marrone was repeatedly molested and groped by a male dancer as part of a prank orchestrated by the TV team. During the broadcast, cast members and guest stars laughed at Marrone‟s irritated reactions to the “simulated” sexual assaults of the dancer. The episode was then normally broadcast and promoted as a hilarious prank. While totally partaking in the general indignation and outrage that this episode has brought about in international media and in national anti-abuse organisations, we want to focus on Marrone‟s positionality as a diasporic Southern Italian woman, which has largely gone overlooked in the diffused reactions to the episode. In this work, we proceed to unearth the often-silenced histories of mass rapes against Southern women committed during the Italian Unification period and in the final stages of World War II, in order to expose the exploitation of female bodies as military trophies, perpetrated by occupying (Italian and international) forces. We then situate the episode involving Emma Marrone and “Amici di Maria de Filippi” within the perverse dynamics of contemporary Italy as a scopic regime that claims continuity with these histories of racialised sexual violence.
