Windows 10 represents a continuation of its move to combine both mobile and desktop computing into one ecosystem using a common software core. Let us explore this concept just a bit further. When Windows XP was launched, computer users thought in terms of Windows or Mac. Today, we need to think in terms of “ecosystems,” because there is no longer just a desktop operating system. Apple has OS X for the desktop and iOS for iPhone and iPads. Google has Chrome OS for the desktop and Android for smartphones and tablets. Before Windows 8, Microsoft had Windows 7 for the desktop and tablets and Windows Phone for smartphones. These sets of systems shared the idea of two separate environments, with one for the desktop and one for mobile devices. With Windows 8, Microsoft sought to create a new paradigm: one operating system for all devices. While a laudable concept, the execution in Windows 8 left much to be desired. Not long after the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft rolled out Windows 8.1 which fixed many of the “issues” in Windows 8 but still never truly achieved its lofty goal of an operating system that across multiple device platforms. Windows 10 is the next evolution of this concept and initially appears to do a much better job of working across the desktop and mobile platforms without significant sacrifices as the functionality and ease-of-use. Windows 10 underwent a significant period of testing with prerelease versions of the software being made available to anyone who wanted to work with it. Microsoft used the feedback and knowledge gained from this extensive testing to fine-tune and tweak the operating system prior to its official launch on June 29, 2015. While still not perfect (I have yet to see a major operating system that was perfect whether it’s from Microsoft or Apple) - Windows
