Zar in Persian meant gold and Dozi was embroidery. Today, the word ‘Zardozi’ carries a different connotation. Zardosi has evolved from the court tradition and taken its form in utilitarian and socio-religious paraphernalia. It is thriving in India with rapid growth in both domestic and export markets. Zardosi embroidery as a handicraft is an enviable possession of our national heritage that contributes substantially to Indian economy. Zardosi as a craft is omnipresent in India, in urban as well as their rural hinterland in homogenous clusters. The traditional craft of Zardosi today, assumes variegated approaches and forms. The inquisitiveness in this craft, led the investigator to undertake the present study. Specific objectives of the study were: 1. To trace the origin and history of Zardosi craft. 2. To comprehend the socio-economic and cultural background of the Zardosi craftsmen. 3. To delineate and register the materials, tools, equipments, methods and designs used in Zardosi embroidery. 4. To examine the trends in Zardosi for domestic and export market, highlighting its use in contemporary wear. 5. To examine the role of Government, Non-Government Organizations and Individuals in uplifting, preserving and reviving the Zardosi craft and craftsmen.

It is a method that creates texture and adds value on the fabric by decoration. Embroidery is the art of using stitches as a decorative feature in their own right by embellishing fabric or other material with design stitches in strands of threads or yarns using a needle. Embroidery may also incorporate other material such as metal strips, pearls, beads, quilts and sequins. It forms an art style of beautiful drawing, harmonious colour, sprightly line and elaborate needle skill. It is an expression of self, rendered with patience, brilliance and dedicated hard work. Key Words: Traditional, embroidery, motif, depiction Introduction: The origin of Indian textiles can be traced to the Indus valley civilization. The art of embroidery is clearly of the Eastern origin and is of such ancient lineage that our knowledge of it stretches into pre-historic ages. The needlework tradition dates back to 2300 BC to 1500 BC and has been richly inherited by various regions, each having a special style and an individual inspiration. With the discovery of bronze needles at the site of Mohenjo-Daro (2500 BC to 1700 BC), it is evident that there was knowledge of needlecraft long ago (Crill, 1999).

Abstract: Zardozi is a traditional embroidery since medieval period in India. It is considered to be famous embroidery of Lucknow as chikankari but zardozi is not getting as much as attention and promotion like chikankari. So this paper covers review of zardozi embroidery in historical perspective from ancient to modern period in India with special reference to Lucknow during Nawab’s times. It also focuses on to find out its contemporary status, factors related to continuity and changes in the embroidery. It lays stress on the socio-economic status and problems of workers (zardoz) specially wages and health issues. This paper is a effort to fetch attention of government and non- government organizations towards this Royal craft of Lucknow for better promotion and facilities. I. When we discuss about Costumes and textiles, we talk about ornamentation on clothes too. Ornamentation on costumes simply means Embroidery on clothes. IFE and EFE matrix enable to select the influence of key external and internal factors resulting in weighted factor values for each set of variables . The first known humans to make clothing, Neanderthal man, survived from about 200,000 B.C.E. to about 30,000 B.C.E. During this time the earth‟s temperature rose and fell dramatically, creating a series of ice ages throughout the northern areas of Europe and Asia where the Neanderthal man lived. With their compact, muscular bodies that conserved body heat, Neanderthals were well adapted to the cold climate of their day. But it was their large brain that served them best. Neanderthal man learned to make crude but effective tools from stone. Tools such as spears and axes made Neanderthals strong hunters, and they hunted the hairy mammoths, bears, deer, musk oxen, and other mammals that shared their environment. At some point, Neanderthals learned how to use the thick, furry hides from these animals to keep themselves warm and dry. With this discovery, clothing was born.
