NEW ZEALAND lead Lorne De Pape in action at the Pacific Championships. Photo supplied By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu curling international Lorne De Pape is on course to fulfi l his dream of compet- ing at the 2006 Winter in Torino, Italy. De Pape led the New Zealand men’s curling team to a gold medal at the just completed Pacifi c Curling Championships in Chuncheon, Korea. New Zealand beat Australia 9-8 in the fi nal to retain their Pacifi c title. It is the fi rst time there has been a repeat champion at the event for eight years. De Pape says he was stoked with his team’s back-to-back gold medal winning achievement. “It’s a remarkable feat, considering the quality of the opposition. “The competitive nature of the men’s event is shown by the fact that four different countries (Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea) have won the event over the last eight years.” The top two teams in the Pacifi c, New Zealand and Australia, have qualifi ed for the 2005 World Curling Championships. The Worlds will be held in Victoria, Canada from April 2-10. It will be the fi nal qualifying event for the 2006 in Italy. “We’re thrilled to be going back to the worlds - that was our objective for the week,” says De Pape. “We now want to perform well at the Worlds and qualify for the Olympics.” Australia started the fi nal strongly, capitilis- ing on a rare miss by Kiwi (Patearoa) to grab an early 3-1 lead. The Kiwis roared back to snap a three of their own in the fourth end. The game was locked up at 6-all after seven ends, with New Zealand holding the hammer. Becker atoned for his earlier miss with a clutch double-takeout in the eighth to give New Zealand another three to lead 9-6. The Kiwis then ran the Aussies out of rocks in the 10th to record their one point victory. In the semi-fi nals, New Zealand beat Japan, while Australia accounted for China. Both matches went the full distance (three games). The full New Zealand team was Sean Becker (skip) Patearoa, (third) North Shore City, Dan Mustapic (second) Dunedin, Lorne De Pape (lead) Te Awamutu, Warren Do- bson (alternate) Naseby, Peter Becker (coach) Patearoa. Nothing between top twilight golf teams One point separates the ‘top three’ after the third round of the twilight golf teams event at Pirongia. Beagle Boys and Blackbirds jointly lead the Fairview Motors sponsored competition with 187 points, followed by Snakes on 186. A fi eld of 103 contested the weekly scrambles.
