AUGUST, 2017 The Voice 9 Bird Photography I have always been a nature lover and one of my favorite subjects are birds. Birds can be quite skittish, so like any other wildlife photography your two main weapons are patience and knowing your subject. A long lens is also helpful since most birds are quite small, but not necessarily a must. Birds are wary and detect movement very well, so sitting quietly waiting for a good shot is very important. If you are out in the wild a camofl ouge outfi t is helpful. A comfortable seat or cushion can make your wait more pleasant. Many birds are quite territorial, so using a bird call will help you get more shots. I play bird calls on my iPod to lure birds out of hiding. By knowing your subject’s habits you can predict its movements and greatly increase your chance of getting a good shot. Your shots will be stronger if you have some action (feeding, singing, etc.). Using food to lure your subjects within range is also helpful. Use a fast shutter speed. Birds move quite rapidly and unpredictably so a slow shutter will yield motion blur. Send me an email at [email protected] with any photo questions. If you’d like to see more of my images, visit my web site at www.kirmsphotography.com. Keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.
