Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

New Jersey Early Intervention System SPP/APR FFY 2018 (SFY 2019) Indicator 11-Attachment State Systemic Improvement Plan Submitted: April 1, 2020 THE STATE SYSTEMIC IMPROVEMENT PLAN PHASE III INTRODUCTION The New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) is the designated State Lead Agency for the Early Intervention System (NJEIS) established under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). As such, the DOH is ultimately responsible for using its supervisory authority to ensure the availability of appropriate early intervention services for eligible infants, toddlers and their families. New Jersey is divided into three geographic regions that are North Jersey, Central Jersey and South Jersey. The state has a twenty-one (21) county governmental structure and NJEIS operates in all 21 counties of New Jersey through contracts with 50 Early Intervention Agencies (EIPs), 13 Service Coordination Units (SCUs) and four Regional Early Intervention Collaboratives (REICs). Phases I & II of the State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP) in 2015 and 2016 were completed through the efforts of the DOH and stakeholders through multiple meetings; the formation of small, task-oriented workgroups; data collection and analysis that all support the State- Identified Measurable Result (SIMR). The NJEIS defined the SIMR as: “Infants and toddlers with disabilities will substantially increase their rate of growth and development of positive social emotional skills by the time they exit the program as measured by Indicator 3A, summary statement 1” The execution of Phase III Years 1 through 4 followed the Actions Steps outlined in each of the four (4) Implementation Plans along with the Methods and Measures of the Evaluation Plan developed and submitted in Phase II. -

Page 1 1 of 1 DOCUMENT Advertising Age November 18, 1991 Blacks reveal TV loyalty SECTION: MEDIA; Media Works; Tracking Shares; Pg. 28 LENGTH: 537 words While overall ratings for the Big 3 networks continue to decline, a BBDO Worldwide analysis of data from Nielsen Media Research shows that blacks in the U.S. are watching network TV in record numbers. "Television Viewing Among Blacks" shows that TV viewing within black households is 48% higher than all other households. In 1990, black households viewed an average 69.8 hours of TV a week. Non-black households watched an average 47.1 hours. The three highest-rated prime-time series among black audiences are "A Different World," "The Cosby Show" and "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Nielsen said. All are on NBC and all feature blacks. "Advertisers and marketers are mainly concerned with age and income, and not race," said Doug Alligood, VP-special markets at BBDO, New York. "Advertisers and marketers target shows that have a broader appeal and can generate a large viewing audience." Mr. Alligood said this can have significant implications for general-market advertisers that also need to reach blacks. "If you are running a general ad campaign, you will underdeliver black consumers," he said. "If you can offset that delivery with those shows that they watch heavily, you will get a small composition vs. the overall audience." Hit shows -- such as ABC's "Roseanne" and CBS' "Murphy Brown" and "Designing Women" -- had lower ratings with black audiences than with the general population because "there is very little recognition that blacks exist" in those shows. -

PANELIST BIOGRAPHIES CATE ADAIR Catherine Adair was born in England, spent her primary education in Switzerland, and then returned to the UK where she earned her degree in Set & Costume Design from the University of Nottingham. After a series of apprenticeships in the London Theater, Catherine immigrated to the United States where she initially worked as a costume designer in East Coast theater productions. Her credits there include The Kennedy Center, Washington Ballet, Onley Theater Company, The Studio and Wolf Trap. Catherine then moved to Los Angeles, joined the West Coast Costume Designers Guild, and started her film and television career. Catherine’s credits include The 70s mini-series for NBC; The District for CBS; the teen film I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dreamworks’ Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Currently Catherine is the costume designer for the new ABC hit series Desperate Housewives. ROSE APODACA As the West Coast Bureau Chief for Women's Wear Daily (WWD) and a contributor to W, Rose Apodaca and her team cover the fashion and beauty industries in a region reaching from Seattle to Las Vegas to San Diego, as well as report on the happenings in Hollywood and the culture-at-large. Apodaca is also instrumental in the many events and related projects tied to WWD and the fashion business in Los Angeles, including the establishment of LA Fashion Week, and has long been a champion of the local design community. Peterson 1 HBO Series Girls and Insecure’s Depiction of Race and Gender Kimberley Peterson Peterson 2 Communication Studies Dr. Aditi Paul Communication Studies 3 May 2018 and 22 May 2018 Abstract In this research study the identification and representation of race and gender were looked at in the primetime HBO television series Insecure and Girls. The characters that were analyzed in two episodes were the young black women of Insecure and in two episodes the young white women in Girls. The method for this study was conducted using content analysis to identify the following variables focusing on identity, racial stereotypes and names used to address one another. Additionally, variables to identify gender included emotional approaches to situations, stereotypes and gender role expectations. The comprehensive findings revealed through similarities and differences of the episodes containing similar plot lines, as well as the overall analysis of each show, gave insight on how race and gender is being presented. -
