In particular, this thesis focuses on the development of Stanley H. Kaplan Education Centers, Ltd. (“Kaplan”) and The Princeton Review (“TPR”), and how these companies were most conducive in making the test-prep industry and standardized test-preparation itself socially acceptable. -

Here's the little-known and absolutely infuriating history of what they did instead. By Kevin Carey he price of college is breaking America. At a moment when Hollywood celebrities and private equity titans have allegedly TT been spending hundreds of thousands in bribes to get their children into elite schools, it seems quaint to recall that higher learning is supposed to be an engine of social mobility. Today, the country’s best colleges are an overpriced gated community whose benefits accrue mostly to the wealthy. At 38 colleges, including Yale, Princeton, Brown and Penn, there are more students from the top 1 percent than the bottom 60 percent. Tuition prices aren’t the only reason for this, but they’re a major one. Public university tuition has doubled in the last two decades, tripled in the last three. Prestige-hungry universities admit large numbers of students https://www.huffpost.com/highline/article/capitalist-takeover-college/ 4/3/19, 11>59 PM Page 2 of 38 who can pay ever-increasing fees and only a relative handful of low- income students. The U.S. now has more student loan debt than credit card debt—upward of $1.5 trillion. Nearly 40 percent of borrowers who entered college in the 2003 academic year could default on their loans by 2023, the Brookings Institution predicts. -

Selingo, Arizona State University and Georgia Institute of Technology MILLER CENTER 1 TRANSFORMATIONS AFFECTING POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION Prepared for the NATIONAL COMMISSION ON FINANCING 21ST CENTURY HIGHER EDUCATION By: Jeffrey J. Selingo Arizona State University and Georgia Institute of Technology LETTER FROM THE COMMISSIONERS he University of Virginia Miller Center created the National Commission on Financing T21st Century Higher Education in 2014 to recommend policy and funding changes to help the nation attain the goal of 60 percent of the labor force with a postsecondary degree or certificate by 2025. This means that 62 million Americans must graduate with a postsecondary degree or credential between 2015 and 2025. At current rates, the United States will produce only 39 million such graduates, leaving a gap of 23 million—a shortfall of more than 2 million per year. To meet the goal, the nation must maintain high school graduation and college entrance rates at or above 75 percent and 70 percent, respectively—reachable goals close to historical norms. The nation must also increase college graduation rates from 40 percent to 60 percent. Increasing the college graduation rate is inherently challenging but made even more so because of major demographic changes. Many of the upcoming college-aged individuals will be people of color or from low-income families, populations that traditionally have needed additional counseling, mentoring, academic support, and financial assistance to successfully enter into and complete higher education. How to increase access and graduation rates and thus equality for these two population groups is the major focus of the commission.
