NCVLI Administrative Assistant Julie Hawkins. 3 A Word on Language For simplicity, the terms “victim” and “survivor” are used interchangeably throughout this guide, and a victim or survivor is generally referred to in the feminine form. We recognize that both women and men are victims of sexual violence. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, however, “[m]ost rapes and sexual assaults are committed against females.
