  • Exploring the Chinese Metal Scene in Contemporary Chinese Society (1996-2015)
"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

“Extinction(s)” Available as: CD, orange LP + CD, Digital Album Release Date: November 23rd , 2018 UNEARTH etched their name into the annals of hard rock history through unrelenting determination, tireless energy and a catalog of stone cold classics. Two decades into a triumphant career, the Massachusetts-bred New Wave of American Heavy Metal trailblazers are both elder statesmen and newly relevant all over again. With over a half million albums sold around the globe, UNEARTH’S astounding legacy has never been more self- evident. Festival vets and road warrior renegades, UNEARTH was a standout in a sea of worthy contenders on the final cross-country Warped Tour. Immediately upon its release in 2018, “Incinerate,” the first single from their seventh studio album, shot to Number 1 on SiriusXM Liquid Metal’s “The Devil’s Dozen” and was among the Top 100 most played songs on Amazon Music. The hunger for new music from UNEARTH was palpable and Extinction(s) delivered in spades. There could be no clearer demonstration of the band’s resilience and the unwavering passion of their worldwide fanbase - a diverse legion of heavy music acolytes who live and breathe the community, culture, and lifestyle UNEARTH represents. Extinction(s) is as much a statement of purpose as a declaration of intent, reigniting the flame of their established strengths and carving a pathway for another two decades of creative accomplishment and inspired live performances. The album is full of venom toward the wrongs of the world, fighting back against the precarious position civilization is in, determined to effect some kind of change.

The Fiery Furnaces (4), formed by Matthew Friedberger and Eleanor Friedberger, siblings from Chicago who relocated to New York, exhibited a versatile and multi-faceted style on Gallowsbird's Bark (2003). At the same time the exuberant neglect of their arrangements was reminiscent of Pere Ubu. Blueberry Boat (2004) stretched out into longer and more ambitious songs, collages of genres and tours de force of arrangement (including electronic keyboards) that were meant to create a new form of musical theater. That form came to life on Rehearsing My Choir (2005), a work structured as a dialogue between an older woman and a younger one over a substratum of eccentric and cacophonous sounds.

Preprints (www.preprints.org) | NOT PEER-REVIEWED | Posted: 27 March 2017 doi:10.20944/preprints201703.0199.v1 Peer-reviewed version available at Challenges 2018, 9, 18; doi:10.3390/challe9010018 Article The Music of Bipolar Disorder David G. Angeler Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Box 7050, SE – 750 07 Uppsala, Sweden; [email protected]; Tel.: +46-18-673049 Abstract: 1) Background: Bipolar or manic-depressive disorder is a malign mental disease that frequently faces social stigma. Educational and thinking models are needed to increase people’s awareness and understanding of the disorder. The arts have potential to achieve this goal. 2) Methods: This paper builds on the recent use of heavy metal music as a thinking and education model. It emphasizes the artistic component of heavy metal and its potential to characterize the symptomatology during the episodes of (hypo)mania and depression and the recurrence of these episodes. Heavy metal music has diversified into subgenres that become allegorical to both the symptoms of episodes and the recurrence of bipolar cycles. 3) Results: Examples of songs are given that mirror distinct facets of the disorder. 4) Conclusion: Although the links drawn between art (music) and science (psychiatry) are inherently subjective, such connections might be used to trigger a learning process, facilitate judgment and decision-making, and induce affective reactions and memory formation in the listener. The approach may facilitate collaborative efforts and serve healthcare professionals and educators as a communication tool to aid the public’s comprehension of the disease and an associated social paradox: On one hand, bipolar disorder incurs substantial costs to society.

WALKING DEAD ON BROADWAY The Broadway is known as the heart of the American theatre industry and is often used synonym for superior and critical entertainment. WALKING DEAD ON BROADWAY pursue the idea of fierce and unbiased art. Brought to life in late 2009, the quintet focuses on vast deathcore-sounds and disenchanted lyrics. Following 2012‘s MCD “WELCOME TO CORPSE WONDERLAND”, “AESHMA” marks the debut album of this quintet from Leipzig, Germany. The Band continued their journey and played 2015 a lot of festivals like With Full Force, Summer Blast, Wacken and many more. They were also part of big tours with Suicide Silence, Caliban, Eskimo Callboy and Whitechapel. After a short break from live gigs the band took their time to write a new full length called “SLAVES“ which will be released in November 2016 via Nuclear Blast / Arising Empire. The band stays true to their roots and mixes their heavy sound with the lyrical reflection of the grievance of our time. In the year 2017 the band had their first headliner tour with their new album “SLAVES”. The tour took place in Germany, Switzerland , Austria and France. Big festivals were also a big part of touring in 2017. In October 2017 the band and the singer “Robert Horn” decided to part ways. After a search for a new singer for the new material they found “Nils Richber” as the perfect missing piece of the puzzle. Since November 2017 he is playing single shows with the band and tours during the Europe Tour 2018 with Within Destruction. He became a full band member during this time.

I would also like to acknowledge my second and third committee members, Dr. Frank Waddell and Dr. Marsha Bryant, whose positivity and enthusiasm for my project was deeply appreciated. My entire committee’s open-mindedness toward an unorthodox topic made this project possible. I would also like to thank my parents, Elaine and William March, for their unwavering support. Additionally, without the love, patience, words of advice, and hours of transcription assistance I received from Austin Mullen, this project would be of far lesser quality. And if it were not for my sister, Amelia March, this project simply would not exist. Thank you for helping me stay connected to the person I truly am. Thank you to Kyo, Toshiya, Shinya, Kaoru and Die of Dir en grey for producing music and for sharing your world with your fans. Last but not least, I would like to thank the courageous and thoughtful fans who shared their stories with me. It is thanks to all of your voices I have been able to create something meaningful.
