Critical Works on James Leslie Mitchell/ Lewis Grassic Gibbon A Bibliography by William K Malcolm The Grassic Gibbon Centre regularly updates the following bibliography of writings about James Leslie Mitchell/ Lewis Grassic Gibbon. The Centre is keen to learn of additions or alterations to be made to the database and would greatly appreciate further details of sources of significant references. The Centre also aims to build up an archive of criticism; photocopies of new or missing items would again be greatly appreciated. J. Leslie Mitchell/Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Exploration SCOTT LYALL Writing to his future wife Rebecca ‘Rhea’ Middleton from the Royal Army Service Corps main supply depot in Jerusalem, 16 January 1921, a twenty-year-old Leslie Mitchell called himself ‘a child of the wanderlust’, claiming that he ‘would be cramped and stifled in one position all my life, [and] would hunger for the freedom, the wider spaces of the Earth’.1 His four years in the army certainly allowed Mitchell to feed some of that hunger: he travelled to various countries in the Middle East and Central Asia, including Palestine, Egypt, Persia and India,2 during a period in which he became interested in Egyptology and the anthropological theory diffusionism.3 Mitchell’s first short stories, published in the Cornhill Magazine from January 1929, focus heavily on the Middle East;4 in these, and in much of his longer fiction written under his own name, there is an exploratory − and utopian – impulse. This takes the characters to Egypt in The Lost Trumpet (1932). Likewise, in Mitchell’s first novel, the semi- autobiographical Stained Radiance (1930), John Garland sits ‘on top of the Grand Pyramid of Gizeh’ during his tour of Egypt with the Air Force.5 The central protagonist of Mitchell’s The Thirteenth Disciple (1931), Malcom Maudslay, bears the surname of the explorer Alfred Maudslay (1850−1931), who would reveal much about the ancient Mayan civilisation; the real-life Maudslay played a key role in deciphering Mayan hieroglyphics,6 a subject Mitchell would examine in his anthropological work The Conquest of the Maya (1934). -

Hanne Tange Grassic Gibbon's Art of Community: A Scots Quair and the Condition of Scotland When Lewis Grassic Gibbon's trilogy A Scots Quair appeared between 1932 and 1934, Scottish artists and intellectuals were engaged in an ambitious campaign to revaluate their national heritage. Since the early 1920s, when the manifestos by Hugh MacDiarmid had launched the notion of a Scottish cultural renaissance, supporters of the revival had considered a negotiation of Scottish history and space essential to their project. The real Scotland, they stressed, had for too long been misrepresented by flawed nineteenth-century imagery. The Renaissance idea of the nation was to be cleared of all past romanticism and sentimentalism, which is to say that the iconographic landscapes and my thologies created by Walter Scott and his followers were no longer acceptable. In his 1934 portrait of the nation, Scotland and the Scots, William Power pro vides the following account of the revaluation: At the back of all [the younger writers] write is a critical synthesis. -

There are innumerable documents in Scots dealing with matters of court, law, diplomacy and (in modern times, what we would call) cultural criticism. Since this unit deals with literary prose, you will focus on prose fiction, both short stories and novels. Prose fiction has been written in Scots for centuries but the most crucial era for this literature is in that period where oral culture, and written, print-generated culture, overlap. It is tempting to think that one superseded the other, but this is simply not true. Everyone tells stories verbally, even today. The art of storytelling comes from ancient times and precedes writing, but when song- and story-collectors began their work seriously and transformed their collected material into written and then printed work, they co-existed with prose-fiction, continuing in the oral tradition, as you have learned in unit 13. -

Mitchell regarded himself as a communicator rather than an artist. His trilogy and the novels published under his own name all reflect his concern for moral and political issues and his passionate interest in the implications of Diffusionism. A Scots Quair is undoubtedly his finest achievement. Apart from his success in creating a new, sophisticated written Scots, it is superior to his other novels in that the ideas do not dominate the structure. -
