4/26/2014 Special Representative Describes Rape as Cheap, Devastating Weapon, Telling Security Council It Remains Largely ‘Cost-free’ 25 April 2014 Security Council SC/11365 Department of Public Information • News and Media Division • New York Security Council 7160th Meeting (AM) SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE DESCRIBES RAPE AS CHEAP, DEVASTATING WEAPON, TELLING SECURITY COUNCIL IT REMAINS LARGELY ‘COST-FREE’ Prevention Our Collective Responsibility, Stresses Secretary-General Rape was a “cheap and devastating weapon” affecting thousands of women, children and men and demanded the Security Council’s singular attention and action, senior officials told the 15-member body as more than 60 delegates expressed a range of views during a day-long debate on conflict-related sexual violence. Zainab Hawa Bangura, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, describing the “heartbreaking” work of meeting wartime sexual violence survivors, said that the horrors they had suffered reaffirmed that it was “a great moral issue of our time”. Underlining that it was almost “cost-free” to rape a woman, child or man in conflict situations, she pointed out that in Bosnia and Herzegovina alone, more than 50,000 women had survived sexual violence during that country’s three-year conflict, with perpetrators largely going unpunished. Yet despite greater political will, the historic G-8 declaration and the 2013 commitment by 144 Member States to reinforce the Security Council’s consensus on the issue, she said the road to combating conflict-related sexual violence was long and hard. Referring to the Secretary-General’s report on that issue, she said 34 State and non-State parties were listed as being credibly suspected of perpetrating sexual violence.

11 June 2015 Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Government of Switzerland and the United Nations Development Programme, we are pleased to invite you to a high-level reception and panel discussion on ‘Financing for Development: The Critical Role of Risk and Resilience’. The purpose of this reception and panel discussion is to draw attention to the issues of risk and resilience ahead of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development, which will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 13-16 July 2015. This event will seek to highlight the critical role of risk and resilience considerations in all forms of finance - public and private, national and international - in achieving long- lasting sustainable development. It will also articulate how innovate financing can be used to tackle shocks (such as disasters, conflict, economic crises, and disease outbreaks) that challenge development and undermine progress. The panel discussion will build on a previous technical workshop that drew on a wide range of experts brought together to discuss and develop key messages on risk, resilience and financing for development. This event will be held on Monday 15 June from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Manhattan Room of the Millennium Hotel located at One United Nations Plaza, New York City. You will find attached to this letter the agenda of the meeting. Given the limited seating, we would be grateful if you could RSVP your participation to Ms. Suzan Boulos ([email protected]) at your earliest convenience. For further information on the issues behind the event please contact Mr.

  • Press Release-22042016
Press Release Hon. Mr. Kamal Thapa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, signed on the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change during the historic High-Level Signature Ceremony convened by H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations at the United Nations Headquarters in New York today. The Ceremony was attended by 175 world leaders including the presidents of COP20, COP21 and COP22 (Peru, France and Morocco respectively). Addressing the Opening Ceremony, the Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon urged all countries “to move quickly to join the Agreement at the national level” so that it could enter into force as early as possible. He said, “climate action is not a burden; indeed, it offers many benefits”. “The poor and most vulnerable must not suffer further from a problem they did not create”, he added. The Signature Ceremony was followed by two parallel sessions for national statements of the State Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), during which Hon. Thapa delivered Nepal’s national statement. While mentioning that as a mountainous country in which the lives and livelihoods of millions of people are directly affected by climate change, the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister called the Paris Agreement “a beacon of hope for safe and shared destiny of humanity”. He further said that the Agreement was a living instrument meant for serious implementation in coherence with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted in 2015. “We have high hopes on our collective strength of global efforts, understanding, cooperation, partnership and support to combat the challenges and fulfill our ambition”, he concluded.
