    Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies 43 (1) 1–23 Questioning Late Antique prosperity: the case of Lycia (southwest Turkey)1 Kristina Terpoy University of Oxford [email protected] The concept of a prosperous late antique eastern Mediterranean has become well-established in scholarship. Lycia (Turkey) is considered to be one such prosperous region in particular. This article questions the notion of ‘prosperity’ and its application to the Lycian region and argues that only certain coastal areas experienced what might be considered ‘prosperity’ in this period. Moreover, it is argued that some settlements, specifically those of the interior, did not experience ‘prosperity’, but may have even declined. Thus, a generalized application of ‘prosperity’ should be approached with caution as it masks nuances in the settlement development and economy of micro- regions. Keywords: Lycia; Anatolia; Late Antiquity; historiography; prosperity Introduction In recent years, the concept of a prosperous late antique eastern Mediterranean has become widely established and accepted in scholarship. The 23-episode serial (soap opera of sorts) is based on Farhat Ishtiaq's novel and inspired by a Nasir Turabi ghazal. Notwithstanding the craze it generated in Pakistan, the serial was broadcast to popular acclaim in India, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. Humsafar's leading stars, Fawad Afzal Khan and Mahira Khan, instantly turned into mass media icons in the world beyond Pakistan. In this class we will explore how classical lyrical poetry and Urdu novel's melodrama contour the aesthetic parameters of Urdu serials in general and Humsafar in particular. We will delve into how issues of gender and sexuality in modern South Asia are tempered by women's "reformist" literature springing from the traditions of Nazir Ahmed, Ashraf Ali Thanavi, and A.R. Khatoon. We will also study theories of reception—especially the reception of Fawad Khan in India and Pakistan. In this vein, we will address the ways in which India and Pakistan share the ground of popular culture in spite of nationalist divides.

    Reused Hindu-Buddhist Panels in a Muslim Graveyard at Ziarat, Talash Valley,Lower Dir FAWAD KHAN Abstract The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province is fortunately very rich in archaeological remains and very often one can hear about the chance discovery of underground structures, sculptures, coins, pottery, and figurines etc. at various areas. However, this abundance of cultural assets is slowly and gradually disappearing due to various reasons of which the clandestine diggings and illegal occupation of ancient sites are the most noteworthy. In every exploration report of the archaeologist we see that certain Hindu and Buddhist period abandoned sites are presently occupied by the construction of mosques, houses, or the community graveyard. In this connection the Muslim graveyard of the Ziarat village is one of the best examples. The present paper thus treats with the preliminary survey report of the documentation of some graves in the said graveyard which has been decorated with the extracted stones from a Buddhists stupa and Hindu temple, and still possesses the original carvings of decorative and architectural representations.
