Still, Andrews knows it’ll be a dogfight once again to take the district crown. “We’ve got a tough district,” Andrews said. “Middleburg is always really scrappy and works hard and then of course you’ve got GHS that comes in and has always had an extremely strong team. US HIGHWAY 90 Plans call for 3 new hotels, 2 eateries

By TONY BRITT [email protected]

More changes are expected for U.S. Highway 90, Lake City’s most prominent commercial thoroughfare. ERA Investments has introduced plans that would add three hotels and two restau- rants along the busy stretch of roadway. The Florida Department of Transportation recently held a public hear- ing at the Columbia County Public Library where the beginning phases of the project were highlighted. ERA Investments, which has applied for a DOT permit for a U.S. 90 median modi- fication, plans to pay for the modification and have its engineering firm for the proj- ect perform the work. According to diagrams at the DOT hear- ing, the Inn & Out gas station will be demolished and the store’s campground eliminated to make room for the new business establishments on the 21-acre property. The site of the old gas station will feature a new restaurant. In the adjoining park- ing lot to the south, three hotels will be erected, and south of the hotels, another restaurant and stormwater facility would be added to the property. Christopher A. Gmuer, Gmuer Engineering president and engineer of record for the project, said the proposal calls for a new median on the roadway across from the Inn and Out gas station and campground entrance. TONY BRITT/Lake City Reporter The median is currently a full turning Sara Pleasants, DOT District II senior public information specialist, speaks at a recent DOT public hearing seeking comments on a median that will be added along U.S. Highway 90. The modification must be made to handle plans for three new hotels CHANGES continued on 5C and two restaurants at the site of the Inn & Out gas station and RV park.
