Nas últimas décadas, os Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP) passaram por transformações políticas bastante intensas, das quais o cinema foi um importante participante. A partir de um extenso corpus de filmes, é apresentado um mosaico de histórias que traduzem elementos significativos destas determinadas nações africanas. No período colonial, o cinema significava um forte instrumento de propaganda do regime português; durante a luta pela independência, o cinema foi usado como uma arma que somava esforços aos movimentos nacionalistas; nos anos iniciais das novas nações independentes, as produções cinematográficas fortaleceram os interesses dos novos estados; e, enfim, depois da década de 1990, com a abertura política e o multipartidarismo, começaram a se desenvolver diversos e variados tipos de cinema relacionados com estes cinco países (Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique e São Tomé e Príncipe), alguns mais críticos, outros mais voltados ao entretenimento. Este trabalho é uma visita guiada por esta filmografia, com o objetivo principal de ampliar nosso contato com os cinemas dos PALOP. Os filmes são pouco conhecidos pelo público brasileiro, então o trabalho adquire importância ao proporcionar o acesso aos filmes pelos pesquisadores interessados, das mais diversas áreas. Os filmes são apresentados conforme uma ordem que respeita elementos comparativos e realça aspectos que sinalizam possíveis critérios de estudo destes cinemas. In the last decades, the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP) have passed through very intense political transformations in which cinema has been an important participant. From an extensive corpus of films, it is presented a mosaic of stories that translate significant elements of these African nations. In the colonial period, cinema represented a strong propaganda instrument for the Portuguese regime; during the struggle against colonialism, cinema was used as a weapon that added efforts to the nationalist movements; in the early years of the new independent nations, cinematographic productions have strengthened the interests of the new states; and, finally, after the 1990s, with the political openness and the multiparty system, various and varied types of cinema began to develop in relation to these five countries (Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé e Príncipe), some more critical, others more focused on entertainment. This study is a guided visit to this filmography, whose main objective is that of broadening the contact with the PALOP's cinemas. These films are not well-known by the Brazilian public, so the study acquires the importance of providing information and access to these films for interested researchers. The order through which the films are presented obeys to comparative elements and highlights aspects that lead to possible criteria for the study of these cinemas. Leni Riefenstahl’s spectacular representations of Germany around the time of the Nazi ascendance to power, and Britain’s charged propaganda documentaries during the war both come to mind here. Propagandist documentary has also been mobilized to celebrate national development and planning pro- grammes, for example, Dziga Vertov’s dynamic representations of the Soviet Union’s five-year plans through his kino-pravda series and other full-length documentaries. The vast body of investigative, activist and exposé documen- taries has questioned nations, their institutions and ideological discourses. 3. Corner, J. 1996. It was a British colony which was amalgamated in 1914. The country became independent in 1962 and was right away bedeviled by military coups d’états and a bloody civil war (1967-1970). In 1999, the country experienced democratic dispensation. In the 1990s, the Nollywood nascent movie industry—following in the footpath of Hollywood and Bollywood—flourished. The movie industry grew thanks to four factors: Rapid urbanization; the hand-held video camera; the advent of satellite TV; and, the overseas migrations of Nigerians. Local languages are used in these films; however, English is the most prominent, along with Nigerian pidgin broken English. Many themes are treated in these films: tradition and customs, religion, witchcraft and sorcery, satire, urban and rural lives, wealth acquisition, consumerism, etc. I discuss the ways in which American popular culture is adopted in Nigeria and recreated on screen.

    INFORMATION SHEET No. 1 Analysis of the UIS International Survey on Feature Film Statistics With the support of the Government of Québec and in collaboration with the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) launched a new international survey in 2007 to collect data on feature films. The analysis was based on a preliminary study by Ivan Bernier, Associate Professor, Université Laval and Serge Bernier, Associate Professor, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. Introduction The UIS International Survey on Feature Film Statistics is based on a new approach to gather internationally comparable and better quality data in the field of culture statistics. Cinema data elicit much interest because the film industry is experiencing massive transition and growth in certain developing countries. These data can also be relevant to the study of the diversity of cultural expressions. Data was obtained from 101 countries for the years 2005-2006, indicating a coverage rate of 49%. This is a relatively reasonable coverage rate for an international survey. In the majority of cases, the data were obtained directly from countries in response to the questionnaire; 75 countries responded, for a response rate of 36%. Among those who responded, 11 – mainly developing countries – indicated they had no data on film production. Data on 26 other countries were obtained from alternative sources (government information available on the Internet, international compilations, etc.). Figure 1 shows the geographical imbalance in coverage rates – a strong concentration in Europe and North America with a coverage rate of 88% and very little coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Pacific with 33%, 27% and 24% respectively.

    SCREENING THE IMPOSSIBLE: THE POLITICS OF FORM AND FEELING IN SECOND WAVE REVOLUTIONARY CINEMA By Sarah Hamblin A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY English 2012 ABSTRACT SCREENING THE IMPOSSIBLE: THE POLITICS OF FORM AND FEELING IN SECOND WAVE REVOLUTIONARY CINEMA By Sarah Hamblin Screening the Impossible explores how the new revolutionary ideologies that emerged in the various global articulations of the “long 1968” produced new forms of revolutionary cinematic practice – what I collectively refer to as a second wave of revolutionary filmmaking. The project focuses on films largely from the 1960s and 1970s that engage the revolutionary energies of the period to examine the relationship between emotion, aesthetics, and political theory in an international cinematic context. Drawing on the claim that the global rebellions of the 1960s mark the denunciation of early 20th century revolutionary narratives, it traces the connections between filmmakers who are similarly preoccupied with the limits, failures, and counter-revolutionary appropriations of orthodox revolutionary thought and yet remain committed to the necessity of revolutionary transformation. Through a comparative analysis of films from various national traditions, the project examines how the political cinema of this period develops a new understanding of revolutionary process and the role that cinema can play in it. At its core, the project lays out the aesthetic and affective contours of this emergent genre, arguing that second wave revolutionary cinema is characterized by its rejection of the teleological narratives and didactic political messages embedded in earlier first wave revolutionary cinematic production.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE MASTER, THE REBEL, AND THE ARTIST: THE FILMS OF OUSMANE SEMBÈNE, DJIBRIL DIOP MAMBÉTY, AND MOUSSA SENE ABSA Museum of the Moving Image and Institute of African Studies, Columbia University, present film series, personal appearances, and roundtable discussion April 2---10 The Senegalese filmmakers Ousmane Sembène (1923–2007) and Djibril Diop Mambéty (1945–1998) pioneered cinematic creativity in Africa. Among the many filmmakers they inspired is Moussa Sene Absa (b. 1958), a protégé and former assistant to Mambéty. Museum of the Moving Image and the Institute of African Studies, Columbia University, will collaborate to present a two-week series of film screenings, personal appearances, and discussions, including rare theatrical screenings of key films by the three filmmakers at the Museum, and a roundtable discussion at Columbia University. The film screenings, curated by June Givanni, will take place on weekends from April 2 through 10, 2011. All film screenings are included with Museum admission. The roundtable, organized by Mamadou Diouf, will take place at Columbia on Monday, April 4, which is Senegalese Independence Day. Among the highlights of the Museum film series are personal appearances by: Moussa Sene Absa, one of Senegal’s leading contemporary filmmakers, with his films Madame Brouette and Yoole: The Sacrifice ; Wasis Diop, brother of Djibril Diop Mambéty and a key collaborator on the film Hyenas , which will be screened along with Wasis Diop’s new short film Joe Oaukum ; Sada Niang, Mambéty’s biographer, introducing a screening of a newly restored 35mm print of Touki Bouki ; and Samba Gadjigo, Sembène’s biographer, presenting Sembène’s last feature film, Moolade.

Course Description The films created in each country are marked with their point of origin; they have nationalities. — Germaine Dulac This course is an overview of modern and contemporary international cinema, with an emphasis on postcolonialism, transnationalism, and the effects of globalization on film cultures. The goal of this class is to explore filmmaking traditions and styles from a number of diverse cultures, as well as to foster a critical awareness of how the language of film employs image and sound to produce meaning and elicit spectatorial response. Preparing students for a deeper study of cinema, we will attentively analyze films in relation to mise en scène, cinematography, editing, sound, and narrative. In addition to conducting formal scene analyses and discussing key historical and critical concepts regarding film, we will pay particular attention to the cultural, political, and economic factors of various national or transnational cinemas, including their systems of production, distribution, and exhibition. Above all, the class is designed to broaden perspectives, strengthen analytical vocabulary, and enhance the student’s critical capacity. The class begins with an analysis of Italian Neorealism and the French New Wave—movements that profoundly influenced the emerging cinemas in Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America, India, and East Asia.
