Depending on the amount to discuss, a meeting/agenda point would be added to a future signage panel meeting to agree content from the Gorsedh place name books to the official place-name masterlist. a. Mappa Kernow Mawgan-in-Meneage (Mawgan in Meneage) (parish) = Pluwvogan Mawgan-in-Meneage (Mawgan in Meneage) (settlement) = S. Mogan There was a discussion between <o> and <au> for the initial vowel. The historical form Pluvogan (1523), found in the Tax returns of Henry VIII was closest to the panel’s base date. Mawla (St Agnes) = Mola Suggested use of the earliest known historical form Mola (960); the historical evidence supports <o> for the initial vowel. Maxworthy (North Petherwin) = Karvacka Comes from OE (Old English) Maccas wordig, meaning ‘Macca’s holding’. Utilising <kar-> for the equivalent of <- worthy> and <ck> to show English origin. Menheniot Station (Menheniot) = Gorsav Mahynyes There was a discussion over the possibility of assibilating final <-t> to <-s>. Four older spellings uncovered during the meeting 1317, 1327, 1342 and 1371 were all spelled with a final <-th>. It was the panel’s belief that assibilation was at least starting during these dates. Milcombe (Pelynt) = DEFERRED Minions (Linkinhorne) = Menyon Miniens Borroughe 1613 Believed to be named from a hill/bronze age cairn. In the late nineteenth century this was referred to as ‘Cheesewring Railway’. On the west wide of the settlement ‘Minions Mound’ can be found. Even today there is little development in the area. Suggested that <Menyon> can be used as plural of ‘stones’. Mitchell (St Enoder) = Pansmoren From OE maedes holh , meaning “maid’s hollow” and does not contain the definite article. Translated as ‘maiden’s hollow’. Nancegollan (Crowan) = Nansigolen There was a choice between the common belief that this comes from “whetstone”, or leave it as obscure and unchanged. Nancledra (Towednack) = Nansklodri 2 Comes from nans , meaning ‘valley’ and the personal name *Clodri/Cludri (from Br. (Breton) Hluto-rig-s, ‘kingly fame’). Newmill (Madron) = Chinoy The historical forms Mulfra Mill 1607; Chynowe 1617; Mulfra Newe Mill 1621 show uncertainty over the original name, having changed several times over fourteen years. The panel believed the second element in the 1617 spelling to mean ‘nephew’. North Tamerton (North Tamerton) = Tredamar The original name would have been Tamer , after the river; the OE <-tun> would have been added later. This additiona can been seen consistently from the 1179 spelling Tamerton onwards. Discussions around possible river suffixes included <-ar> and <-er>. It was noted that the <-ar> suffix had been agreed at an earlier meeting; the agreed spelling for Lynher was queried. The Tredamar spelling was selected to reflect the final <-ton> suffix throughout the historical spellings. Pencuke (St Gennys) = Pennkywek Noted that the element <kyw> was obscure. Penelewey (Kea) = Pennhalluwi Penpethy aka Penperthy (Lanteglos by Camelford) = Tinpeythi Meaning tin ‘rump’ + <peythi> (obscure word) Penpillick (Tywardreath) = Pennpellik From the place name ‘Penpell’; penn , meaning ‘end’ + pell , meaning ‘far’ + <-ik> suffix, meaning ‘little’.‘Little Penpell’ is only a quarter-mile away from its namesake. So also:- Penpell Farm aka Penpall (Lanlivery) = Pennpell Penpell Plantation (Lanlivery) = Gwydhlan Benpell Pentewan (St Austell) = Bentewyn The argument for assibilation was queried during the discussion for this name when the 1302 historical spelling Bensewen clearly demonstrates medial assibilation of <t> to <s>. The panel decided to leave the letter as <t>. Porthoustock (St Keverne) (ST) = Porthewstek 3 Porthoustock (St Keverne) (Cove) = Porth Ewstek Believed to consist of porth, meaning ‘cove’ + personal name, possibly ‘Eustek’. The agreed spelling utilises the diphthong <Ew-> from the 1529 form Porthewstock . Poughill (Poughill) = Fentenbogha Believed to consist of fenten, meaning ‘spring’ + bogha, obscure Quethiock (Quethiock) = Gwydhek Meaning ‘wooded-place’; while a looser translation, it is closer to the historical spellings. Reworgan = DEFERRED Rosedinnick (St Columb Major) = DEFERRED Saint Columb Road = DEFERRED Saint Jidgey (St Issey) = S. Yji Saint Kew Highway (St Kew) = Fordhveur The 1699 form shows this name as Highway . The panel decided to utilise a similar approach, with the option to use the parish name if required. 6.
