It can be considered a further exploration of what the "practice of the wild" would be. The ancient Buddhist precept "Cause the least possible harm" and the implicit ecological call to "Let nature flour- ish" join in a reverence for human life and then go beyond that to include the rest of creation. These essays are Buddhist, poetic, and environmental calls to complex moral thought and action —metaphoric, oblique, and mythopoetic, but also I hope practical. Ethics and aesthetics are deeply inter- twined. Art, beauty, and craft have always drawn on the self- organizing "wild" side of language and mind. Human ideas of place and space, our contemporary focus on watersheds, become both model and metaphor. Our hope would be to see the interacting realms, learn where we are, and thereby move toward a style of planetary and ecological cosmopoli- tanism. Meanwhile, be lean, compassionate, and virtuously fero- cious, living in the self-disciplined elegance of "wild mind." 'W *r 1 "W >r Ethl C<J — ^r "W ^ *W ^ "Vf North Beach Ln the spiritual and political loneliness of America of the fif- ties you'd hitch a thousand miles to meet a friend. Whatever lives needs a habitat, a culture of warmth and moisture to grow. West Coast of those days, San Francisco was the only city; and of San Francisco, our home port was North Beach. Why? Because partly, totally non- Anglo. First, the Costa- noan native peoples—peoples living around the Bay for five thousand-plus years. Sergeant Jose Ortega crossed sand dunes and thickets to climb a hill (Telegraph) there around the first of November, 1769. Later, Irish on the hill (prior to quake and fire) and tales of goats grazing those rocks Tellygraft hill, Tellygraft hill, Knobby old, slobby old, Tellygraft hill —then Italian, Sicilian, Portuguese (fishermen), Chinese (Kuang-tung and Hakka), and even Basque sheepherders down from Nevada on vacation. When we of the fifties and after walked into it, wall^ was the key word. Maybe no place else in urban America has such a feel of on-foot: narrow streets, high blank walls, and stair- step steeps of alleys and white-wood houses cheap to rent; laundry flapping in the foggy wind from flat-topped roofs. Like Morocco, or ancient terraced fertile-crescent pueblos. A tiny watershed divide is at the corner of Green and Co- lumbus. Northward a creek flowed, the mouth of which, on the little alley called Water Street (now some blocks up from the Fisherman's Wharf coast— all fill), is under the basement of a friend's apartment. The easterly stream went down by what was the Barbary Coast strip of clubs once, and on underneath the present Coast and Geodetic Survey offices on Battery. Storms come out of a place in the North Pacific, high latitudes, pulse after pulse of weather (storms deflected north in summer). San Francisco, North Beach, like living on the bow of a ship. Over the dark running seas, from No- vember on, breaking in rains and flying cloud bits on the sharp edges of Telegraph Hill. A habitat, midway between two other summer and win- ter ranges, Berkeley and Marin County. Who would not, en route, stop off in North Beach? To buy duck eggs, drop into Vesuvio's, City Lights, get sesame oil or wine, walk up Grant to this or that Place. Or living there: the hum of cable- car cables under the street—lit-up ships down on the docks working all night—the predawn crashes of the Scavengers' trucks. Spanning years from a time when young women would get arrested for walking barefoot, to the barebottom clubs of Broadway now tending tourist tastes from afar. A habitat. The Transamerica Pyramid, a strikingly wasteful and arrogant building, stands square on what was once called Montgomery Block, a building that housed the 4 "V- North Beach artists and revolutionaries of the thirties and forties. Ken- neth Rexroth, many others, lived there; foundations of post- war libertarianism; movements that became publicly known as "beat" in the middle fifties. This emphasis often neglected the deeply dug-in and committed thinkers and artists of the era who never got or needed much media fame; who were the culture that nourished so much. Many people risking all —following sometimes the path of excess and not always going beyond folly to the hoped-for wisdom. Yet, like the sub-Aleutian storms, pulse after pulse came out of North Beach from the fifties forward that touched the lives of people around the world. I worked the docks in those days. Down to Pier 23 to wor\. Smith-Rice cranes, and Friday a white egret thatfluttered down on the pier, dwarfing the seagulls, riffled its wings and feathers delicately a few times then flew off bac\ in the direction from which it came. —23. Bruce Elder Ryerson University Among the most erudite of the San Francisco Renaissance writers was the poet and Zen Buddhist priest Philip Whalen (1923–2002). In “‘Goldberry is Waiting’; Or, P.W., His Magic Education As A Poet,” Whalen remarks, I saw that poetry didn’t belong to me, it wasn’t my province; it was older and larger and more powerful than I, and it would exist beyond my life-span. And it was, in turn, only one of the means of communicating with those worlds of imagination and vision and magical and religious knowledge which all painters and musicians and inventors and saints and shamans and lunatics and yogis and dope fiends and novelists heard and saw and ‘tuned in’ on. Poetry was not a communication from ME to ALL THOSE OTHERS, but from the invisible magical worlds to me . everybody else, ALL THOSE OTHERS.1 The manner of writing is familiar: it is peculiar to the San Francisco Renaissance, but the ideas expounded are common enough: that art mediates between a higher realm of pure spirituality and consensus reality is a hallmark of theopoetics of any stripe. Likewise, Whalen’s claim that art conveys a magical and religious experience that “all painters and musicians and inventors and saints and shamans and lunatics and yogis and dope fiends and novelists . ‘turned in’ on” is characteristic of the San Francisco Renaissance in its rhetorical manner, but in its substance the assertion could have been made by vanguard artists of diverse allegiances (a fact that suggests much about the prevalence of theopoetics in oppositional poetics).

    Tadeusz Pióro Beyond Parody: Literariness in John Ashbery’s Plays John Ashbery wrote his first play, The Heroes, in 1950, a few years before he began to make his name as a poet. The Compromise, his only three-act play, came next (in 1955, a year before the publication of Some Trees), and his last play thus far, The Philosopher, limited, like The Heroes, to one act, was written in 1960. Critics usually find these dra- mas worth mentioning when they can be used to explain, illustrate or contextualize something in Ashbery’s poems, yet in and of themselves they have received scant atten- tion. Such neglect, relative though it be, is nevertheless curious, since precisely because of their proleptic significance the plays should merit greater scrutiny, even if their appar- ent straightforwardness and simplicity might seem to be at odds with the complexities of the poems, so much so that extended analysis appears risibly redundant. But even treat- ing the plays as, first and foremost, parodic, as David Lehman and Kevin Killian have done, deflects attention from a quality they share with many poems by Ashbery, and it is this quality I would like to examine in some detail, primarily as it appears in his dramas. I call it literariness, and even though the term does not have currency in critical dis- course, I find it useful as a kind of shorthand for several simultaneously present aspects of some, but not very many, literary texts. The most important of these aspects for my purposes here is the text’s relation to what Edward Mendelson has called “the world outside.” This expression comes up in Geoff Ward’s account of influence in Ashbery’s work.

    The History and Philosophy of the Postwar American Counterculture: Anarchy, the Beats and the Psychedelic Transformation of Consciousness By Ed D’Angelo Copyright © Ed D’Angelo 2019 A much shortened version of this paper appeared as “Anarchism and the Beats” in The Philosophy of the Beats, edited by Sharin Elkholy and published by University Press of Kentucky in 2012. 1 The postwar American counterculture was established by a small circle of so- called “beat” poets located primarily in New York and San Francisco in the late 1940s and 1950s. Were it not for the beats of the early postwar years there would have been no “hippies” in the 1960s. And in spite of the apparent differences between the hippies and the “punks,” were it not for the hippies and the beats, there would have been no punks in the 1970s or 80s, either. The beats not only anticipated nearly every aspect of hippy culture in the late 1940s and 1950s, but many of those who led the hippy movement in the 1960s such as Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg were themselves beat poets. By the 1970s Allen Ginsberg could be found with such icons of the early punk movement as Patty Smith and the Clash. The beat poet William Burroughs was a punk before there were “punks,” and was much loved by punks when there were. The beat poets, therefore, helped shape the culture of generations of Americans who grew up in the postwar years. But rarely if ever has the philosophy of the postwar American counterculture been seriously studied by philosophers.

    ENGLISH 233 Tradition and Renewal in American Indian Literature COURSE DESCRIPTION English 233 is an introduction to North American Indian verbal art. This course is designed to satisfy the General Education literary studies ("FSLT") requirement. FSLT courses are supposed to concentrate on textual interpretation; they are supposed to prompt you to analyze how meaning is (or, at least, may be) constructed by verbal artists and their audiences. Such courses are also supposed to give significant attention to how texts are created and received, to the historical and cultural contexts in which they are created and received, and to the relationship of texts to one another. In this course you will be doing all these things as you study both oral and written texts representative of emerging Native American literary tradition. You will be introduced to three interrelated kinds of "text": oral texts (in the form of videotapes of live traditional storytelling performances), ethnographic texts (in the form of transcriptions of the sorts of verbal artistry covered above), and "literary" texts (poetry and novels) written by Native Americans within the past 30 years that derive much of their authority from oral tradition. The primary focus of the course will be on analyzing the ways that meaning gets constructed in these oral and print texts. Additionally, in order to remain consistent with the objectives of the FSLT requirement, you will be expected to pay attention to some other matters that these particular texts raise and/or illustrate. These other concerns include (a) the shaping influence of various cultural and historical contexts in which representative Native American works are embedded; (b) the various literary techniques Native American writers use to carry storyteller-audience intersubjectivity over into print texts; and (c) the role that language plays as a generative, reality-inducing force in Native American cultural traditions.
