2. Η Σιθωνία είναι το δεύτερο «πόδι» της Χαλκιδικής, όπως συνηθίζεται να αποκαλείται, η μεσαία δηλαδή από τις τρεις χερσονήσους της (δυτικά βρίσκεται αυτή της Κασσάνδρας και ανατολικά του Άθω). Το όνομά της το οφείλει στον μυθολογικό βασιλιά της περιοχής Σίθωνα, γιο του Ποσειδώνα και της Όσσας.

3. Είναι ένας τόπος με ξεχωριστή ομορφιά και ακτές που φτάνουν τα ογδόντα επτά χιλιόμετρα μήκους. Δυτικά βρέχεται από το Σιγγιτικό κόλπο και ανατολικά από τον Τορωναίο, ενώ στο κέντρο της μακρόστενης αυτής λωρίδας γης υπάρχει το βουνό Ίταμος, ή αλλιώς Δραγουντέλης, δημοφιλής χειμερινός προορισμός. Υπάρχουν πολλά μέρη για να επισκεφθεί κανείς, όπως η αρχαία πόλη, το κάστρο και ο Ναός του Αγίου Αθανασίου στην Τορώνη, ο ναός του 16ου αιώνα στη Νικήτη, καθώς και οι ανεμόμυλοι στη Συκιά. Την λίστα των προς επίσκεψη περιοχών συμπληρώνουν και τα διάφορα παραδοσιακά ψαροχώρια, όπως το Πόρτο Κουφό, που είναι το μεγαλύτερο και ασφαλέστερο φυσικό λιμάνι σε ολόκληρη τη χώρα.

4. Τα παράλια της Σιθωνίας παρουσιάζουν εξαιρετικό ενδιαφέρον και ποικιλία όλο το χρόνο, με πιο χαρακτηριστική εικόνα την άσπρη αμμουδιά και τα πεύκα που φτάνουν μέχρι μόλις λίγα μέτρα από το νερό. 2. Sithonia is the second "foot" of Chalkidiki, as it is accustomed to be called, and it is the middle of its three peninsulas (to the west is situated that of Kassandras and to the east that of Athos). Its name is owed to the mythological king of the area Sithonas, the son of Poseidon and Ossa.

3. It is a place of special beauty and coasts that reach eighty-seven kilometers in length. On the west, it is washed by the Siggitikos Gulf and on the east by the Toronaios Gulf, whereas in the center of this oblong strip of land there exists the Itamos Mountain, or else Dragoynteli, a popular winter destination. There are many places for one to visit, such as the ancient town, the castle, and the temple of Saint Athanasios in Toroni, the sixteenth century temple in Nikiti, as well as the windmills in Sykia. The list of places is completed with the various traditional fish villages, such as Porto Koufo, which is the biggest and safest natural port in the whole country.

4. The coastline of Sithonia presents particular interest and variety throughout the year, with a most characteristic image the white sandy beach and the pines that stretch until just a few meters from the water. The best-known beaches are the Azapiko, Tristinika, Korakas, Marathias, and many others. A landscape of exceptional beauty, however, is the Kartalia, which is situated at the southern part of the peninsula, with coasts full of rocks.

Apart from the landscapes, Sithonia also has to offer a particularly vivid lifestyle, with numerous cultural and athletic events, sea sports, riding in the pine trees, and nightlife similar to the one of Mykonos. The heritage of the past reaches us today, with the most known local product being Sithonia's honey as well as various candles. Είναι ένα σύγχρονο κέντρο με υποδομές για κάθε ηλικία, με 12 πίστες και τη δυνατότητα να δοκιμάσει κανείς την εμπειρία του νυχτερινού σκι. Βρίσκεται σε ένα οροπέδιο στη θέση «Διαβολότοπος», σε μια περιοχή όπου υπάρχει καλής ποιότητας χιόνι για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα καθ' όλο τον χρόνο. 2. Karpenisi is situated in the Evrytania prefecture of Middle Greece at the foothills of the mountain Veloychi at an altitude of 960 meters; it is a picturesque town inside the firs, in a spot protected from the strong northerly winds of the area.

3. It first appeared as a settlement during the Byzantine years, and throughout history it played an important role, especially in the Greek Revolution of 1821. It fell at the hands of the Turks, the Arvanites, and lastly the Germans, who in August 1944 destroyed the town almost completely. Nevertheless, it has preserved many elements of traditional architecture. Among the most important monuments that one can visit is the Cathedral of the Trinity at the west side of the central square, which is considered to be the city's jewel.

4. Near Karpenisi, and at a distance of eleven kilometers from it, is situated the ski center of Karpenisi at Veloychi at an altitude of eighteen hundred meters. It is a contemporary center with facilities for every age, with twelve tracks and the possibility to try out the experience of night skiing. It is on a hill at the position "Devil's Place" and in an area where there is good quality snow for a long period of time throughout the year. The view of the surroundings, with the mountains, the firs, and the villages, is breathtaking, as the center develops until it reaches 2,040 meters of altitude.

5. Besides the services of the ski center, one can enjoy the nature of Evrytania freely by hiking and climbing. Therefore, because of the enchanting nature that surrounds it, Karpenisi is the most popular destination for the winter vacations of the Greeks.

Finding the Perfect Place to Start a Village

According to tradition, when Karpenisi was about to be built, its founders hung a piece of meat on the trees of three different areas during the wintertime. In the area where the meat went bad, they believed that the climate was milder and therefore the most suitable place to begin the construction. So it is really surprising how different the climate of Karpenisi is in relationship to the rest of the area: in this way, it is the perfect base for trips, not only for skiing and climbing, but also for others that offer a different acquaintance with nature, such as rafting, riding, and safaris by jeep.

2. Τα Μετέωρα είναι μια περιοχή στο νομό Τρικάλων, πάνω από την πόλη της Καλαμπάκας και κοντά στην οροσειρά της Πίνδου, που περιλαμβάνει μοναστηριακά συγκροτήματα. Το ιδιαίτερο χαρακτηριστικό αυτού του τόπου είναι το γεωλογικό τοπίο και ο τρόπος που χτίστηκαν τα κτήρια πάνω στις κορυφές των βράχων.

3. Είναι το δεύτερο μοναστικό συγκρότημα στην Ελλάδα μετά το Άγιο Όρος, με 24 μοναστήρια που ιδρύθηκαν από το 1350 έως 1500 μΧ, από τα οποία 15 έχουν εγκαταλειφθεί και ερειπωθεί. Οι πρώτοι μοναχοί έφτασαν και μετοίκησαν στις απάτητες κορφές των Μετεώρων από το 1100 μΧ, μιας και πρόσφεραν το ιδανικό μέρος για ασκητισμό και περισυλλογή, εκεί ανάμεσα στα απότομα βράχια; μέσα στις κουφάλες των βράχων και μακριά από τον πολιτισμό μπορούσαν να έρθουν πιο κοντά στο Θεό. Σιγά-σιγά άρχισαν να κτίζονται τα πρώτα μοναστήρια, στα οποία η πρόσβαση ήταν σχεδόν αδύνατη; μόνο καλάθια ή ανεμόσκαλες την επέτρεπαν. Σήμερα όμως έχουν πλέον σκαλιστεί σκαλιά στους βράχους. Έτσι, τα πέτρινα κτήρια έμοιαζαν συνέχεια των βράχων.

4. Το ύψος των βράχων φτάνει τα 400 μέτρα και αποτελείται από σκουρόχρωμες κατακόρυφες πέτρες. Ο τρόπος σχηματισμού τους παραμένει ακόμα άγνωστος, αν και υπάρχουν πολλές διαφορετικές απόψεις. Οι πεταλίδες στα βράχια υποδηλώνουν πως παλιά νερά έτρεχαν στην περιοχή και μάλλον κάποιες αλλαγές έφεραν στην επιφάνεια τα Μετέωρα.

5. Οι υπέροχες αυτές πέτρες υψώνονται επιβλητικά. Άλλωστε, η μοναδικότητα του τοπίου είναι αυτή που ανακήρυξε τα Μετέωρα μνημείο Πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς της UNESCO.

2. Patmos is one of the Aegean Sea's islands and belongs to the complex of Dodekanisa. It is a tranquil destination full of spirituality, which might not have intense nightlife, but it nonetheless constitutes a stop for many cruise ships or a base for trips to the surrounding islands.

3. Reaching the port, one first faces the Skala, the biggest and most contemporary settlement of the island. The town, that is to say the old medieval settlement, is situated a little further away and spreads all over the hill; the castle is located there. Groikos and Kampos are two more places worth visiting in the island. Both are picturesque villages, with the first being a fish village in an amazing bay with a romantic view, and the second offering a white sandy beach and virginal nature in a landscape that has not been touched by the low touristic development of the island. 2. Theo Angelopoulos is without a doubt one of the most important and discussed Greek directors of the past thirty years. He achieved not only conquering the domestic audience but also surmounting the frontiers to become accepted on an international level.

3. He was born in Athens in 1935 and began studying law, which he abandoned though in the school to go to Paris and pursue his dream. There, at the Sorbonne, he began with French philosophy and filmography classes, and he ended up at the Cinema School IDHEC. The adventure of his studies does not cease at this point, but after a dispute with the professor of direction, he continued at Musee de l' homme with ethnology classes.

4. Completing that, he returned to Greece in 1964 where he started working as a cinema critic in a newspaper, surprising those who believed that he would return to the City of Light. This decision of his was influenced by the political situation that dominated at that time in his country. Until 1979, he was occupied in the field of cinema with some short- length movies, however, the big start of his career came with his first feature-length movie, "Reconstruction," which won several awards in Greece and abroad.

5. This success was followed by many other movies, such as "Days of '36," "The Traveling Players," "Alexander the Great," "Voyage to Cythera," "Landscape in the Mist," "Eternity and a Day," and "The Weeping Meadow." Almost all of his creations receive especially important worldwide honors, among which are the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and the best European movie award.

2. The movie "Z" is a political thriller based on the book by the author Vasilis Vasilikos. It is about an imaginary narration of the story of the assassination of the Greek politician Grigorios Lamprakis in 1963, under the direction and production of Kostas Gavras.

3. The story, even though it takes place in Algeria, contains many elements that relate to the Greek reality and the true story of the protagonist, a scientist named "Zita." Besides, Gavras pointed out that any similarity to persons and situations is not at all coincidental; on the contrary, one would say that he aimed at doing so. In combination with the use of authentic elements from the investigation, the movie goes beyond a police mystery to acquire a documentary character.

4. Zita is scheduled to give a speech against the atomic bomb, but before he enters the hall, he is attacked by a right-wing extremist group related to the government. Although the police stand nearby, they don't block the attack, resulting in Zita's serious injury. He manages to complete the speech; later on however, these injuries will lead him to death. Not believing the official interpretation that it was an accident, a group of people begins an investigation searching for the truth. At the trial that follows, a governmental conspiracy is revealed, but everything changes when the political situation gets turned over by the dictatorship.

Ο Κώστας Γαβράς είναι ένας Έλληνας σκηνοθέτης και παραγωγός που εργάζεται στο εξωτερικό, και συγκεκριμένα στον γαλλικό κινηματογράφο. 2. "The Spring Gathering," a movie directed by Dimos Avdeliodis in 1999, is a tribute to Greek nature and the different image it presents each season. Through events of simple, everyday rural life, it shows the character and tradition of Greeks.

3. The story unfolds in a small village of Chios during the '60s, where the position of the field guard is empty after the sudden death of the last one. Even though the residents have repeatedly asked for a substitute, nobody seems willing to go; rumors that the previous one died on duty and his haunting spirit scare them away. However, when the salary increases, four candidates appear, one for each season of the year.

4. The film follows their succession at the position of the field guard to the sounds of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." With moments of time when children come back from school and family meals, it describes a miserable life in the village and shows the different characters—the passions and weaknesses not only of the guards, but also of the rest of the residents. Among the guards' passions there is a girl, Elisso, that all four of them will chase but nobody will catch as she slips away into the fields.

5. More than anything else though, the nature of Chios dominates the movie; the mastic trees, poppies, olive trees, beaches, and alleys do not just compose the setting, but they become the stars. For each season of the year they play another role—sometimes sweet and fragrant, other times harsh and bitter. No matter what, they compose a work that received many awards and even more applause.

2. Pantelis Voulgaris, born in 1940 in Athens, is a scriptwriter and director of some of the most important movies of the Greek cinema. At least, that is what the large number of awards he received proves.

3. After the end of his cinematographic studies, he worked as an assistant director in several productions that were basically of commercial character. Being active in a transitional period for the seventh art in Greece, he belonged to the avant-garde generation, and in particular, he was of one of the founders of New Greek Cinema (NGC). NGC appears in parallel to the great moments of the Old (OGC) and expresses the necessity for renewal with new themes, styles, and persons.

The movie Brides was filmed in 2004 under the direction of Pantelis Voulgaris, the script of Ioanna Karystiani, the music of Stamatis Spanoudakis, and the production of Martin Scorsese. Even though the involvement of these persons increased expectations, the critics characterized it simply as good. Despite the lack of acclaim, big sales of tickets were not missing.

The story takes place on a ship, where seven hundred women travel from Constantinople to America to meet for the first time the man they will marry-a man about whom they know nothing more than what a photo of him can offer them. It is a movie that describes the feelings and drama of these women, which notwithstanding the critics' opinion, certainly managed to touch the audience.

1. Δράκος

2. Ο «Δράκος» είναι μια αστυνομική ταινία του 1956, σε σκηνοθεσία Ν. Κούνδουρου, σενάριο Ι. Καμπανέλλη και μουσική Μάνου Χατζιδάκι. Θα μπορούσε όμως να θεωρηθεί και δράμα, εξαιτίας της εξέλιξης και ειδικά της κατάληξης της πλοκής.

3. Ένας συνηθισμένος υπάλληλος τράπεζας που κάθε μέρα βουλιάζει όλο και πιο πολύ στη μοναξιά του, συνειδητοποιεί πως μοιάζει με έναν κακοποιό που αναζητά η αστυνομία. Η κατάσταση περιπλέκεται όταν για πρώτη φορά στη ζωή του δεν περνά απαρατήρητος και αρχίζουν να τον αναγνωρίζουν λανθασμένα ως τον Δράκο. Ο πρωταγωνιστής τρομαγμένος, για να ξεφύγει από το κυνηγητό της αστυνομίας περνάει τη νύχτα σε ένα κακόφημο καμπαρέ, όπου και συναντά μια ομάδα κλεφτών. Η ομάδα αυτή τον μπερδεύει επίσης με τον Δράκο και του προτείνει να γίνει ο αρχηγός σε μια ληστεία αρχαίων. Γοητευμένος από τον σεβασμό που εμπνέει με την ψεύτικη ταυτότητα, παρασύρεται στον υπόκοσμο, χαρούμενος που έστω και για λίγο βγαίνει από τη μοναξιά του και γίνεται μέρος της κοινωνίας. Όταν όμως αποκαλυφθεί η αλήθεια, θα προτιμήσει να πεθάνει.

4. Η ταινία αυτή αναφέρεται στη μοναξιά και τη ματαιοδοξία του ανθρώπου και πιο συγκεκριμένα στο τι τα προκαλεί. Η Ελληνική κοινωνία στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του '50 δεν έχει μόνο μία πλευρά, αυτή που παρουσιάζεται στις εμπορικές ταινίες της εποχής, όπου η ζωή άλλοτε καλή και άλλοτε σκληρή, πάντα έχει ευτυχισμένο τέλος. Στο "Δράκο" όλη η ζωή του πρωταγωνιστή οδηγείται από την κοινωνία και το κράτος, ξεκινώντας από τη μίζερη ζωή στην αποξένωση και φτάνοντας μέχρι το θάνατο. Σε αυτό το διάστημα, ο ασήμαντος αλλά τίμιος υπάλληλος γίνεται ένας σεβαστός κακοποιός, καθώς τυφλώνεται από το ξαφνικό νόημα που αποκτά η ζωή του. Όταν όμως συνειδητοποιήσει τις πράξεις του, η στιγμιαία χαρά που έλαβε θα διαλυθεί και θα βρεθεί σε αδιέξοδο.
