Commodore‘s Report Vice Commodore’s View Was it just the beginning of July? Fireworks and regattas seem a distant memory, but happy one. Thank you to all who worked on this endeavor. It was good to see so many boats at this year’s Firecracker- a welcome up-swing in the number of boats! As we are in mid-summer, working or vacationing, many of us are focused on friends and family and enjoying the outdoors. Count us fortunate to have a lake, docks and deck to gather at on a weekly basis. And (below) this is my dear friend Liz Phillips doing exactly that! Hope you all are joined this month by those who make you smile. Calm hearts to all- eliz While Vice Commodore Richard tended to the club during Firecracker Regatta, visiting family Micah and daughter got San Juan 21 Dickey Bird out on the water for him. Firecracker Regatta July 4-5, 2015 Wow! What a wonderful Firecracker Regatta! 28 boats from four states and representing more than eight yacht clubs registered! Racing was off to a slow start on Saturday, despite a 9 a.m. Skippers Meeting and On Call racing following. Fortunately, the racers and spectators found ways to occupy themselves until the wind actually picked up around 2:30. Then three races were completed before some stormy looking clouds came in. Sunday three more races were completed, with good winds first thing in the morning! We received many compliments from the racers and their families—KYC put on a great regatta! It couldn’t have happened without all the club members who volunteered their time and talents! A big THANK YOU goes out to all of you! At the Awards Ceremony, we thanked a lot of you, but we neglected a few key people, so we’d like to recognize them here: our chase boat people—Ernie, Doug, Mick, and Steve, Elizabeth for her photography, and Bud and Pam for spreading the word among cat sailors—we had 12 multihull racers this year! It’s been our pleasure to co-chair the Firecracker Regatta! We appreciate all the help and support from our fellow club members. We hope you enjoy the rest of the summer and the water, while we have some! Janice Hicks and Lisa Mulvey, Firecracker Regatta Co-Chairs IT TAKES A CLUB TO HOST A REGATTA. (right) Jake Zaiger Regatta Report EAGLE LAKE (Northern California) MULTI-HULL REGATTA submitted by Pam Randall We arrived at the Sunkist Fruit Growers site along the south shore of Eagle Lake at about 1 pm. We are lucky to live so close, just a drive down highway 39, across the cutback to Adin, a lovely drive through the trees. The first view of the lake was not unexpected after our April trip south. No surprise. The entire northern leg of Eagle Lake no longer exists. Several lake front towns are now field front towns. Alas. The "hole in Eagle Lake" continues to drain out the contents with no "plug" in the works. Fortunately, there is still enough lake to sail on - clean, cold and clear. And this year, instead of the mid 90's, the air was a brisk mid-60's. Hallelujah! Bud and I parked our boat in the usual spot for set up, just below the porta-potti station and just above the bike path along the lake, and proceeded to try out our new F150 truck bed tent rig.

  • To My Friends in the UK I Seem to Have Promised Steve and Simon That I Would Write an Article on Tuning a Sonar for Your Website
To My Friends in the UK I seem to have promised Steve and Simon that I would write an article on tuning a Sonar for your website. Since “tuning” alone is not enough to be useful, here are some of my thoughts on a number of factors that may improve upwind performance. I hope you find at least some of this helpful. Further, in an effort to counteract the current wave of American tribalism, I welcome any requests for clarification, or other discussion, either on your website forum or by email to [email protected]. Sheeting and Steering-Mainsheet and jib sheet trim are the most critical controls. In moderate conditions mainsheet wants to be trimmed so the upper leech telltale stalls about half the time. In light air you may want it to flow most of the time to maximize speed and get the keel working. In very heavy air you may not be able to keep it from flowing full time, which also helps drive through waves. Traveler should be adjusted so boom is on the centerline unless you’re overpowered. Every small puff opens the main leech and requires an immediate trim to restore the leech to its critical setting. Every lull requires an ease. Jib should be sheeted so all three luff telltales break at the same time but jib upper leech telltale should absolutely never stall. We do not cleat the jib sheet while sailing upwind, but always work to perfect its trim. In very light air I like to heel the boat to give some shape to the sails.
