....................................................................................................................... 29 Page 2 of 31 Chapter 1: Philosophy The Basketball Hawke’s Bay (BBHB) Model of Youth Basketball Development has a philosophy that endeavours to accomplish two primary goals: 1. Create a better environment for all youth players. 2. Develop global players more prepared for going forward in any sport. The aim is to accomplish these goals through two primary means: 1. Educating coaches, teachers, parents and organizations about the different development stages that each individual progresses through during childhood. 2. Providing a template for coaches to follow to ensure each player develops and has the opportunity to maximize their potential. The Five Development Stages The Development Model features five stages: 1. Foundation; 2. Fundamentals; 3. Training; 4. Competition; and 5. Performance. The BBHB Development Model uses these developmental periods to maximize training for each athlete and provide a general guideline for youth coaches. Different styles, approaches and emphases are appropriate in each stage, though a general philosophy of long term development through fun, learning and development remains constant. The Foundation Stage (ages 7-10) builds the athlete’s base through games, play and basic instruction to ensure proper motor skill development. The introduction of a wide array of basketball and athletic skills through fun, active training sessions is more important than winning games. The Fundamental Stage (ages 11-14) emphasizes basketball fundamentals, using the general athletic skills developed through the Foundation Stage to build sport-specific skills. The Training Stage (ages 15-16) is a transitional stage as developmental athlete’s transition into competitive athletes through higher training intensity and volume. The Competition Stage (ages 17-20) is comprised of competitive athletes and increases the intensity from the Training Stage. Players specialize in one sport and train year-round to improve performance in order to compete and become an elite athlete. Chapter 2: The Foundation Stage The Foundation Stage is the initial stage when a young child is introduced to the game, often informally, and eventually joins a team. This stage emphasizes: Fun, Exploration, Freedom, Love of the Sport Develop and introduce skills through game play, rather than instruction and drills. The coach organizes the activity and takes on a role like a cheerleader: supportive, active, encouraging, positive and involved. This is not the stage for strategists or even great fundamental teaching. Page 3 of 31 Stage 1: The Foundation Stage Training Goals: Speed, coordination, execution of proper movement patterns, fundamentals of movements, and exposure to multiple skills Emphasis: Fun and games to develop skills and athleticism Coaches have a dual purpose: provide a positive, fun environment and prepare athletes for future participation. Stage 1 is pivotal for athletic development. During the first stage a coach should: 1. Expose athletes to a multitude of general skills. 2. Devote more time to athletic skills training than tactical or technical training to prepare players for long term development and success. 3. Utilize scientific principles in training. 4. Use fun games for skill development. Exposure to General Skills Introduce general movement skills and patterns, as these movements form the foundation of all athletic actions. Athletes move from general to specific skills and simple to complex movements. At this age, encourage players to play multiple sports.

    1-on-2 Description A good 1 on 2 defensive drill that helps people with their ball handling. Divide the court in half lengthwise. Make up groups of three players to do the drill. You should have two groups going at a time. One on each each half of the court. Give a ball to each group. One player on each group is on offense and the other two are on defense. The offensive player must reach the other end of the Instructions floor, trying to beat both defenders. If a steal or deflection occurs, the offensive player gets the ball back at that spot. At the other end of the floor, the offensive player moves to defense and one of the defensive players goes to offense and they come back. Then let the next groups go. Players 6 or more Let the players only use their half of the floor. Tips Tell the ball handlers to be aggressive and use moves and not be afraid of making mistakes. Skills ball handling, double teaming on defense 4 speed dribble combinations This drill improves the player's ball handling skills especially speed dribbling Description ability. This Drill does best for point guards. Centers can also benefit from this drill which adds to their offensive ability in the paint. This drill must be done on an open court. Have the players ready for the 4 dribbling drills starting at the endline. When the whistle starts, the player/s must dribble starting with either hand then perform the cross-over dribble, between the Instructions legs, behind the back dribble and the spin dribble.

    “There is no substitute for hard work!” ~ Vince Lombardi Legendary Pro Football Coach Green Bay Packers Foreword This is a Manual… a Guide… or better yet a Master Plan designed for the offensive improvement of the perimeter basketball player. It is a compilation of over thirty years of observing highly skilled offensive players and the abilities that make them so very special. I believe that a highly effective offensive basketball player can be developed through specialized drills and correct repetition. This manual will be the cornerstone. This MANUAL was also developed out of dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction and frustration stemmed from witnessing basketball players from other parts of the world whom are more skilled offensively than American players. In terms of pure athleticism – spectacular dunks, acrobatic lay-ups - I believe that American basketball players are unrivaled in the world. Yet, when you discuss pure fundamental basketball, European basketball players, in my opinion, have surpassed the Americans. The reason for this growing discrepancy in fundamental basketball is that the European basketball player, from a very early age, is given specialized basketball instructions. Most of their basketball time is supervised and spent with repetitive drills – 90% of a youngster’s shooting, ball-handling, etc. basketball time should be I can’t begin to tell you the number of 8 and 9 year-old basketball spent in a structured players whom are very tall for their age. Their respective Little League basketball environment coaches make the tragic mistake of sticking them underneath the basket where specialized individual and never work with the youngsters to develop their perimeter game.
