Journal of Criminal Justice and Law Review : Vol. 1 • No. 1 • June 2009 IDENTIFYING LARGE REPLICABLE FILM POPULATIONS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE FILM RESEARCH: A UNIFIED FILM POPULATION IDENTIFICATION METHODOLOGY FRANKLIN T. WILSON Indiana State University ABSTRACT: Historically, a dominant proportion of academic studies of social science issues in theatrically released films have focused on issues surrounding crime and the criminal justice system. Additionally, a dominant proportion has utilized non-probability sampling methods in identifying the films to be analyzed. Arguably one of the primary reasons film studies of social science issues have used non-probability samples may be that no one has established definitive operational definitions of populations of films, let alone develop datasets from which researchers can draw. In this article a new methodology for establishing film populations for both qualitative and quantitative research–the Unified Film Population Identification Methodology–is both described and demonstrated. This methodology was created and is presented here in hopes of expand the types of film studies utilized in the examination of social science issues to those communication theories that require the examination of large blocks of media. Further, it is anticipated that this methodology will help unify film studies of social science issues in the future and, as a result, increase the reliability, validity, and replicability of the said studies. Keywords: UFPIM, Film, Core Cop, Methodology, probability. Mass media research conducted in the academic realm has generally been theoretical in nature, utilizing public data, with research agendas emanating from the academic researchers themselves. Academic studies cover a gambit of areas including, but not limited to, antisocial and prosocial effects of specific media content, uses and gratifications, agenda setting by the media, and the cultivation of perceptions of social reality (Wimmer & Dominick, 2003).

  • ZODIAC Final Prodnotes
1 PRODUCTION NOTES “… I shall no longer announce to anyone when I commit my murders, they shall look like routine robberies, killings of anger and a few fake accidents, etc…” Letter 7 - November 9, 1969 It is the ultimate cold case. The rampage of a madman who has never been caught; the elusive cipher slayer who gripped the nation in fear, America’s very own Jack the Ripper. He publicly claimed 13 victims, then more, two dozen more. Police pinned him with seven, five dead. The true body count may never be known. One thing is certain: That count includes the living. Based on the true story of a serial killer who terrified the San Francisco Bay Area and taunted authorities in four jurisdictions with his ciphers and letters for decades, “Zodiac” is a thriller from David Fincher, director of “Se7en” and “Fight Club.” Hunting down the hunter would become an obsession for four men, an obsession that would turn them into ghosts of their former selves, their lives built and destroyed by the killer’s endless trail of clues. Of the four, Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) was the wild card. A shy editorial cartoonist, Graysmith didn’t have the cache and expertise of his seasoned and cynical colleague Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.), the San Francisco Chronicle’s star crime reporter. He didn’t have Avery’s connections with San Francisco Police Department’s celebrated and ambitious Homicide 2 Inspector David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and his low-key, meticulous partner Inspector William Armstrong (Anthony Edwards). What he did have was a crucial insight no one anticipated.

Production Notes Starring: Kara Hayward, Liana Liberato, Jordana Spiro, Shea Whigham with Malin Akerman and Tony Hale Directed By: Martha Stephens Written By: Shannon Bradley-Colleary Run Time: 111 Minutes Rating: Not Rated Press Contacts: Katrina Wan / [email protected] / 323-240-9996 Tatum Wan / [email protected] / 818-590-1530 1 SYNOPSIS: In a god-fearing small town in 1960s Oklahoma, bespectacled and reclusive teen Iris endures the booze-induced antics of her mother and daily doses of bullying from her classmates. She finds solace in Maggie, the charismatic and enigmatic new girl at school, who hones in on Iris’s untapped potential and coaxes her out of her shell. When Maggie’s mysterious past can no longer be suppressed, the tiny community is thrown into a state of panic, leaving Maggie to take potentially drastic measures and inciting Iris to stand up for her friend and herself. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: I heard decaying leaves chatter and scrape against the dusty storefronts. Below the suffocating vastness of prairie skies, I caught the whispers of endless rows of corn. There was the rustle of fussy dress skirts flapping against whistling winds. The sanctuary of night swimming beckoned, promising boldness and mystery. A cold trickle from wet hair dripped down the base of my spine. I knew the hardscrabble farming community of WaKeeney, Kansas: it’s the type of small American town in which a shy teenager can live out her life and end up feeling anonymous. Yearning hangs like a fog over the central characters in TO THE STARS. Maggie pines to be accepted as she is, a lesbian; or otherwise to wish away her sexuality and be the model daughter that her parents expect.
