More information The first section of the book is devoted to practical issues after a preamble about the history of the route. Advice is given about public transport, how to get a Pilgrim Certificate, best times to walk, what to carry, opening times of shops, restaurants and so forth, budget, itinerary and other useful information that is needed. The four appendices at the rear of the book give The Way of St Francis: Via di Francesco: From Florence to Assisi and Rome tips, route overviews and other useful information. I can't think of anything useful that has been omitted. I believe that Sandy Brown has written a very useful guide book for anyone contemplating the St Francis Way. There is a host of useful information, mapping and GPS provided that I think would enable a hiker to complete the route safely. The walk looks challenging and passes through beautiful areas of Central Italy. The weak part of the book for backpackers is the lack of information about camping but we do have the internet now to overcome that problem. But specialist guides written by cognoscenti and offering in depth, practical advice, flourish. Even in the age of GPS, pilgrims need help in staying on the straight and narrow. -

Agreement INGV-DPC 2007-2009 Project S5 : “High-resolution multi-disciplinary monitoring of active fault test-site areas in Italy” UR Reports - II phase May 1st, 2009 – May 31st, 2010 Task1. Test site Alto Tiberina Fault (ATF). UR1 -INGV: Lauro Chiaraluce (CNT-INGV). The works carried out and finalised over the past two years have been devoted to the foundation of the permanent Alto Tiberina Fault test site. During this period of time the INGV Airplane working group finalised the monitoring infrastructure composed of a dense network of co-located seismological and geodetic instruments. There was then a need to recover complementary information to turn on both the observing system and to immediately start planning its future implementation. The S5 project allowed us to provide many of these necessities. With the Working Package 1 (Raffaele Di Stefano; CNT-INGV) we answered the question: how can we observe the seismicity pattern that characterises the activity of a normal fault system for a long period of time with the least manual work? That is why we set up a modular and semi-automatic procedure that goes from continuous waveforms to high resolution event location, computation of magnitude and focal mechanism. The process comprises independent codes that allow us to monitor with time a series of parameters such as network detection threshold versus the completeness of magnitude of our catalogues, the rate of seismic release, b-values and VP/VS ratio at single station and the level of noise. A final modulus analyses the generated datasets to produce maps and graphs for interpretation. -
