From Le Somail from Port-Lauragais Paris Strasbourg Nantes Lyon Bordeau Toulouse Marseille MIDI VENTENAC Canal du Midi - Canal de la Robine - Canal du Rhône à Sète Classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi links the Atlantic with the Mediterranean and takes you through sun drenched vineyards and to numerous villages and canal side restaurants. The best bits: plenty of sunshine, numerous historical sites to visit, and excellent Languedoc wines from waterside vineyards. FROM LE SOMAIL From the charming small port of Le Somail, cruise away to discover the Canal du Midi in the direction of Carcassonne or if your crui- sing time permits down to Narbonne close to the Mediterranean Sea. You will cruise on the largest pound of France (52 km without any locks) up to the Fonserannes staircase, situated close to the historical city of Béziers. A few kilometres more and you arrive, via Agde, to the huge Etang de Thau - renowned for its oyster beds... CANAL DU MIDI FROM PORT-LAURAGAIS Cast off from our base in Port-Lauragais and sail west towards Toulouse, named the "pink city" because of its red brick buildings, rich with points of interest for tourists - Heritage Capitol museum, city of Space to name a couple. To the East a must stop is Castelnaudary to try its delicious cassoulet, a local gastronomic specialty, before cruising on to the medieval city of Carcassonne. The streets of Trebes, whose origin date back to 4500BC, await you before reaching Homps and its man-made beaches. • About Fanjeaux, France Perched on the Crest of a Hill in Southwestern
About Fanjeaux, France Perched on the crest of a hill in Southwestern France, Fanjeaux is a peaceful agricultural community that traces its origins back to the Romans. According to local legend, a Roman temple to Jupiter was located where the parish church now stands. Thus the name of the town proudly reflects its Roman heritage– Fanum (temple) Jovis (Jupiter). It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town with only 900 inhabitants was a busy commercial and social center of 3,000 people during the time of Saint Dominic. When he arrived on foot with the Bishop of Osma in 1206, Fanjeaux’s narrow streets must have been filled with peddlers, pilgrims, farmers and even soldiers. The women would gather to wash their clothes on the stones at the edge of a spring where a washing place still stands today. The church we see today had not yet been built. According to the inscription on a stone on the south facing outer wall, the church was constructed between 1278 and 1281, after Saint Dominic’s death. You should take a walk to see the church after dark when its octagonal bell tower and stone spire, crowned with an orb, are illuminated by warm orange lights. This thick-walled, rectangular stone church is an example of the local Romanesque style and has an early Gothic front portal or door (the rounded Romanesque arch is slightly pointed at the top). The interior of the church was modernized in the 18th century and is Baroque in style, but the church still houses unusual reliquaries and statues from the 13th through 16th centuries.

You ride quietly sometimes on cycle paths or the hauling path along the canal, sometimes on low-traffic country roads. You will cross the Lauragais, a large fertile plain surronded by hills that flourished on the 15th and 16th centuries thanks to pastel trade, which also brought prosperity to Toulouse. The village churches with their characteristic fortified bell towers are a heritage of this rich past. You ride through Castelnaudary, the proud capital of cassoulet, and the charming abbey of Saint-Papoul before arriving in Carcassonne at the foot of the impressing medieval fortress. • A Wonderful Cruise Down the ‘Platane’ Lined Canal Du Midi Unesco World Heritage Site
I have been a practicing Francophile for over 30 years now. If only to persuade you to read on, let me reassure you that, as a Francophile, I am passionate about France and “things French” - be reassured that I have no abnormal feelings about ex Spanish dictators. I am also a canalaholic. These two admissions explain why my wife, Lesley, and I arrived in Calais on our barge, in October 1988, having left our “comfortable lives” in the City and our mooring on the Grand Union canal at Tring. For at least ten years prior to our arrival in France we had holidayed in France and on the canals. A wonderful cruise down the ‘platane’ lined Canal du Midi Unesco World Heritage site. Built by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century TEX T AND PHO T OGRA P HS MIKE GARDNER ROBER T S The vacation has become a vocation We loved the Midi. Steeped in history, bathed in sunshine So when we went through the sea-lock and on to the inland and with the Mediterranean beaches a stones-throw away, waterways it was the start of the realisation of our dream; it is a wonderful place to live. The entire Canal du Midi is our dream to take our own boat, our floating home, all the a UNESCO world heritage site. Built during the reign of way through French canal network from Calais to the Med. Louis XIV, in the 17th Century, by Pierre-Paul Riquet, it Initially, this dream was to be a sabbatical lasting a year.
