  • Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

See Geeta Kapur and Ashish Rajadhyaksha, ‘Bombay/ Mumbai 1992-2001’ in Iwona Blazwick (ed.), Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis, Tate Publishing, London, 2001 This publication accompanied a major exhibition at the Tate Modern, London (February- April 2001) titled Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis. The project set out to examine key moments of cultural creativity in nine cities across the world on the following premise: that at different times in different places through the twentieth century, the energy of the modern metropolis peaked to produce a cultural explosion, where the arts flourished in a dynamic and radical interchange. The reasons for these creative flashpoints are diverse, but each city, at its particular time, can be seen to have become a crucible drawing artists from the city and other regions into an artistic and intellectual ferment.

  • 3 - Time National Awardwinning Filmmaker Alumnus Sudhir Mishra 2016
nos 006 alft 0025 “There was more glamour in 1979 in Delhi University than there is in the film industry today!” 3 - time National AwardWinning filmmaker alumnus Sudhir Mishra 2016 Atisha Jain Updated: Jan 30, 2016 09:01 IST Sudhir Mishra at the Crime Writer’s Festival in Delhi January 2016 alpix 0605 Photo: Virendra Singh Gosain The idea of meeting Sudhir Mishra, the three-time National Award-winning filmmaker with a 30-year career and a French equivalent of a knighthood is intimidating. The writer-director is known for his hard-hitting, realistic and richly political films. What sort of research do you do to create your characters? I never research. I never make films about things I don’t know. I had lived in Mumbai from 1982-83 till 1990 when I made Dharavi, which is possibly about my experiences in Bombay. I was around when the Emergency happened. I was 16-17 years old, starting college. I knew all the characters – that’s why I say they are my imaginary elder brothers – in the beginning of Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi; they were all 23-24 at that time. I didn’t have to ask anybody when I started writing Hazaaron... in 1998-99. Your films always have strong female characters… Because those are based on women I know! I grew up with a paternal grandmother who single-handedly took care of five sons. In our household, women were stronger. Even my cousin sisters are far more independent than the guys. Do you think filmmakers depend on a glamorous cast for box office success much more now? There was more glamour in 1979 in Delhi University than there is in the film industry today! A trend in Bollywood you detest.

  • 'MUMBAI CUTTING' Makes IFFLA Gala Night Memorable
'MUMBAI CUTTING' makes IFFLA gala night memorable indiaglitz.com /channels/hindi/article/38243.html The IFFLA festival closed with the Closing Night Gala presentation of MUMBAI CUTTING...A CITY UNFOLDS on Sunday, April 27 at Arc Light Hollywood. A joint project by eleven of the best directors in India, Sudhir Mishra, Anurag, Kashyap, Rituparno Ghosh, Revathy, Kundan Shah, Jahnu Baruwa, Rahul Dholakia, Shashank Ghosh, Manish Jha, Ruchi Narain and Ayush Raina. The film gives each ace director an opportunity to interpret Mumbai, one of the most dynamic, prosperous and vivacious cities of the world in their own special style. At times stark, sometimes comical, and equally cynical, and hopeful, the diverse visions that they portrayed captures the complexities of the 60 million people that have been drawn to India's dream factory, where struggling for survival is the main pastime! This year's Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles attendees included eight of the eleven prominent directors of MUMBAI CUTTING...A CITY UNFOLDS; they were Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Kashyap, Revathy, Kundan Shah, Jahnu Baruwa, Rahul Dholakia, Shashank Ghosh and Ayush Raina. All the directors were energized by the response they got after the premiere. Sudhir Mishra is all kudos for the production house " I am proud of White cloud to have pulled off this massive project and I am glad for being the first to encourage this venture , after seeing the film today I am sure it's going to be well received by the Indian Audience too".
