Network Notebook
Network Notebook Fall Quarter 2018 (October - December) 1 A World of Services for Our Affiliates We make great radio as affordable as possible: • Our production costs are primarily covered by our arts partners and outside funding, not from our affiliates, marketing or sales. • Affiliation fees only apply when a station takes three or more programs. The actual affiliation fee is based on a station’s market share. Affiliates are not charged fees for the selection of WFMT Radio Network programs on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). • The cost of our Beethoven and Jazz Network overnight services is based on a sliding scale, depending on the number of hours you use (the more hours you use, the lower the hourly rate). We also offer reduced Beethoven and Jazz Network rates for HD broadcast. Through PRX, you can schedule any hour of the Beethoven or Jazz Network throughout the day and the files are delivered a week in advance for maximum flexibility. We provide highly skilled technical support: • Programs are available through the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). PRX delivers files to you days in advance so you can schedule them for broadcast at your convenience. We provide technical support in conjunction with PRX to answer all your distribution questions. In cases of emergency or for use as an alternate distribution platform, we also offer an FTP (File Transfer Protocol), which is kept up to date with all of our series and specials. We keep you informed about our shows and help you promote them to your listeners: • Affiliates receive our quarterly Network Notebook with all our program offerings, and our regular online WFMT Radio Network Newsletter, with news updates, previews of upcoming shows and more. -

The recordings in this series date from the mid-1940s through the late 1950s, and will feature several which have never before appeared on CD, as well as some that have not been available in MENOTTI any form in nearly half a century. The present recording of The Consul, which makes its CD début here, was made a month after the work’s (1911– 2007) Philadelphia première. American Decca was at the time primarily a “pop” label, the home of Bing Crosby and Judy Garland, and did not yet have much experience in the area of Classical music. Indeed, this recording seems to have been done more because of the work’s critical acclaim on the Broadway stage than as an opera, since Decca had The Consul also recorded Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman with members of the original cast around the same time. -

The Mysterious Affair of the Serenade
THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR OF THE SERENADE The time has come for the revaluation of Aldo Finzi, a Jewish composer who was on the point of winning, with his “playful comedy” when the anti-Jewish laws were about to be issued in Italy, the competition for a new opera which the La Scala Theatre had published. Aldo Finzi’s “Serenade to the Wind”, an injustice to be repaired. “ ... go, serenade to the wind, but don’t reveal that your singing - hides a secret longing - for a weeping moment - of an intimate torment...” On 11th February 1936 Wolf Ferrari’s “Il campiello”was staged at the Scala Theatre , conducted by Gino Marinuzzi with an all star cast: Mafalda Favero, Margherita Carosio, Iris Adami- Corradetti, Giuseppe Nessi, the very colourful and sunny only scene by Pieretto Bianchi. It can still be admired in the nowadays impossible to find volume that La Scala caused to be published in 1946 (1). Just seven years before, Toscanini had conducted, in addition to Fidelio, also Falstaff and Meistersingers in what was going to be his last Scala season before World War II (2). In December of the same year, on Bronislaw Hubermann’s invitation, he went to Palestine ( Jerusalem and Tel Aviv) to conduct the first Israeli orchestra and he was so impressed by the new life of the country he was visiting that he stated: “Here in Palestine I have found the country where I can be only Man as I conceive him” (3). These were the times and the place where a Jewish composer, on the eve of those anti-Jewish laws that were to alter radically the landscape of Italian music, was about to set to music a libretto by Carlo Veneziani, a “comedy of manners” racy and romantic, spicy and amusing, in which graceful satire and tart repartees combined to create the kind of wit which, to quote Falstaff,” creates wit in others”. -

[T] IMRE PALLÓ
VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANZ (FRANTISEK) PÁCAL [t]. Leitomischi, Austria, 1865-Nepomuk, Czechoslo- vakia, 1938. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. His rare records demonstate a fine voice with considerable ring in the upper register. -Internet sources 1858. 10” Blk. Wien G&T 43832 [891x-Do-2z]. FRÜHLINGSZEIT (Becker). In 1895 he appeared at La Scala in the premieres of Mascagni’s Guglielmo Ratcliff and Silvano. Other engagements at La Scala followed, as well as at the Rome Costanzi, 1903 (with Caruso in Aida) and other prominent Italian houses. -
