Naoko Takeuchi After going to the post-recording parties, I realized that Sailor Moon has come to life! I mean they really exist - Bunny and her friends!! I felt like a goddess who created mankind. It was so exciting. “ — Sailor Moon, Volume 3 Biography Naoko Takeuchi is best known as the creator of Sailor Moon, and her forte is in writing girls’ romance manga. Manga is the Japanese” word for Quick Facts “comic,” but in English it means “Japanese comics.” Naoko Takeuchi was born to Ikuko and Kenji Takeuchi on March 15, 1967 in the city * Born in 1967 of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. She has one sibling: a younger brother named Shingo. Takeuchi loved drawing from a very young age, * Japanese so drawing comics came naturally to her. The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967. -

A List of Magical Powers in Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn and Kōdonēmu wa Sērā V Version 1.3: 5 July 2003. Compiled by Ian Andreas Miller. Created on 23 September 2002. The anime and manga continuities of Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn, the video games that were inspired by those two continuities, and the Kōdonēmu wa Sērā V manga story feature characters who recite special incantations to invoke their magical powers. A magical power may require a character to perform a maneuver if he or she intends to inflict damage upon an opponent. Some people refer to such a special power as an “attack.” That character may also have a transformation incantation, which allows him or her to change his or her form. Some people call such an incantation a henshin, which means transformation in Japanese. Other magical powers have different effects. One magical power may allow a character to change the form of a particular object, while another magical power may allow him or her to move quickly from one place to another. The main characters of Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn and Kōdonēmu wa Sērā V use their magical powers to fight their enemies and protect innocent people. Most of the magical incantations that are recited in the anime and manga continuities of Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn, in the video games that were inspired by those two continuities, and in the Kōdonēmu wa Sērā V manga story appear in this list. This list includes most of the names of the special attack maneuvers that the characters perform. It also mentions most of the transformation phrases that the characters recite. -

Although what is perceived to be its counterpart, yaoi or BL, has received a great amount of scholarly attention in the past years, yuri, however, is still a nascent topic in academic discourse. Upon briefly delineating Japanese prewar girls’ culture and its influence on the romantic and erotic spaces found in female-authored manga made for a female audience, several female-authored narratives from the erotic yuri manga anthology Yuri hime wildrose are analyzed in regards to their depiction of relationship dynamics, the female body, and the space in which both are explored. We in the West differentiate between “comics” and “graphic novels,” as the former conjures up images of bespectacled nerds lining up to purchase the latest issue of a Deadpool comic, and the latter brings to mind more serious material like Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home or Art Spiegelman’s Maus, which, respectively, deal with heavy subjects like sexuality and the trauma of a Holocaust survivor. -

Balser 1 Magic in Japanese Popular Culture Hannah M. Balser University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Balser 2 Abstract This thesis examines the depiction of magic in Japanese popular media in order to find out how certain forms of popular media reflect societal views regarding national identity, youth, and gender. Through this examination, I aim to explain the context surrounding the cultural ideas being exported through Japanese popular media and their global influence. Various primary sources of Japanese popular media were analyzed, namely anime, manga and light novels. These works were analyzed under the theoretical frameworks provided by a number of anthropologists and Japanese popular culture scholars. By combining the disciplines of pop culture studies and anthropology, this analysis of magical Japanese popular media examines not only what the kinds of cultural messages are being expressed through magic in popular media, but who benefits from the popularity of magical power fantasies, and what effects these messages and fantasies have on Japanese society. Potencial de las Tecnologías Emergentes en el proceso de aprendizaje-enseñanza de proyectos de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación. Marina Nadia Ulver Masalyka1 [email protected] Florencia Natalia Giraudo2 [email protected] Como sociedad venimos experimentando un constante aprendizaje en torno a las tecnologías emergentes, las comunicaciones, los entornos virtuales y las nuevas formas de sociabilización. Los procesos adaptativos a los complejos entornos cambiantes en los que globalmente estamos inmersos, requieren de habilidades y conocimientos precisos para compatibilizar con los requerimientos que plantean los nuevos paradigmas de evolución sociocultural. En la enseñanza del diseño es fundamental renovar la mirada tanto en la perspectiva de la interpretación de las problemáticas actuales, como también en la manera en la que guiamos y formamos a los alumnos como futuros profesionales. Debemos ser capaces de incentivar la innovación y la generación de propuestas creativas que den respuestas efectivas y eficaces a los problemas que los diseñadores debemos resolver. Mediante el desarrollo y aplicación de recursos tecnológicos, digitales y virtuales, es que podemos garantizar la ubicuidad del aprendizaje y de las relaciones interpersonales con vistas a un futuro que inexorable, llega sin esperar a que estemos preparados para experimentarlo. Esta ponencia resume la vivencia concreta del proceso de investigación y desarrollo de un Trabajo Final de Grado de Diseño de Indumentaria y Textil, abordado desde una visión innovadora y creativa, potenciada por tecnologías emergentes interactivas. Introducción Como personas y seres sociales, nos comunicamos con otras personas e interactuamos dentro de espacios comunes, utilizando todos nuestros sentidos. A través de cada uno de ellos logramos interpretar la realidad que experimentamos para luego exteriorizar lo percibido, provocando un intercambio de información con otros, mediante lenguajes y canales diversos para tal fin.
