Phoenix and Miles invite everyone for a Christmas party, to avoid a repeat of last year when everyone just appeared due to miscommunication. Miles does what he can to help Apollo deal with grief at the holidays, a situation he is very familiar with. Apollo also hates Klavier's band, his clothes, his hair, his tendency to sprinkle conversations with German, and the fact that despite all this, he's still at the top of the class. She's careful about where she puts her feet, Phoenix notes, despite the casual tone. It makes for a slightly awkward stance, how she steps to avoid every square of carpet Mia's body once touched. Most adults have incidents in their youth that they would rather forget, a bad hair cut or terrible fashion choices. Klaiver, however, in all of his vanity, just had to leave something tangible behind." While helping Apollo move, Klavier discovers an old album from a cringe-worthy time in his career that he would rather forget. i Just Go Find Yourself a Nice Alpha: Gender and Consent in Supernatural Fanfiction’s Alpha/Beta/Omega Universe by Tessa Barone A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in English (Honors Scholar) Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in History (Honors Scholar) Presented May 28, 2019 Commencement June 2019 ii iii AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Tessa Barone for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in English and Honors Baccalaureate Arts in History presented on May 28, 2019. Title: Just Go Find Yourself a Nice Alpha: Gender and Consent in Supernatural Fanfiction’s Alpha/Beta/Omega Universe. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Rebecca Olson Shows, books, and media are constantly negotiating power with their fans. Who decides what is canon? To whom does the story belong?? The answer has traditionally been in favor of producers. However, in the age of the internet, fans now hold considerably more power than they ever have before, and some shows, like the CW’s Supernatural, respond by participating in “fanservice.” Many fans of this show strongly support slash and incest pairings, and by allowing such interpretations to be acknowledged in the narrative Supernatural makes increasingly transgressive readings available to the audience. The trope known as “Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics” is extremely popular, borderline pornographic, and virtually eradicates women from the narrative—instead depicting a relationship between men that is highly heterosexual in dynamic. This trope deconstructs the gender binary by assigning gender roles based on behavior, rather than biology, and appeals to an animal code of ethics in order to indulge in problematic, sexist, and abusive sexual situations.

Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

From the 1970s to the present, the Comic Market (hereafter Comiket) has been a leading venue for manga and anime fan activi- ties in Japan. Over the three days of the convention, more than thirty-seven thousand groups participate, and their dōjinshi (self-published fan fiction) and character goods generate ¥10 billion in sales.1 Contrary to the common stereo- type of anime/manga cult fans—the so-called otaku—who are males in their twenties and thirties, more than 70 percent of the participants in this fan fic- tion market are reported to be women in their twenties and thirties.2 Dōjinshi have created a locus where female fans vigorously explore identities and desires that are usually not expressed openly in public. The overwhelming majority of women’s fan fiction consists of stories that adapt characters from official me- dia to portray male–male homosexual romance and/or erotica.

  • Ethics at Play in Undertale: Rhetoric, Identity and Deconstruction
Ethics at Play in Undertale: Rhetoric, Identity and Deconstruction Frederic SERAPHINE The University of Tokyo – ITASIA Program Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033, JAPAN +81-3-5841-8769 Seraphine[at]g.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp ABSTRACT This paper focuses on the effect of ethical – and unethical – actions of the player on their perception of the self towards game characters within Toby Fox’s (2015) independent Role Playing Game (RPG) Undertale, a game often perceived as a pacifist text. With a focus on the notions of guilt and responsibility in mind, a survey with 560 participants from the Undertale fandom was conducted, and thousands of YouTube comments were scraped to better understand how the audience who watched or played the different routes of the game, refer to its characters. Through the joint analysis of the game’s semiotics, survey data, and data scraping, this paper argues that, beyond the rhetorical nature of its story, Undertale is operating a deconstruction of the RPG genre and is harnessing the emotional power of gameplay to evoke thoughts about responsibility and raise the player’s awareness about violence and its consequences. Keywords rhetoric, ethics, deconstruction, pacifism, violence, character, avatar, meta-storytelling INTRODUCTION There are some artistic experiences that stick with us for a very long time, aesthetic memories, that one may put between their first kiss and their first fight. For many of its players, a game like Undertale seems to fall into this category. Because its story puts the player in the situation of making choices that affect dramatically the course of the narrative, and the survival of its characters, it seems people who played this game grow an attachment to its fictional characters comparable to the attachment to a friend in their real life.

The convention expects to welcome over two thousand fans of Japanese animation (anime), comics (manga), gaming, and science fiction to downtown Lancaster for the weekend-long event. Zenkaikon had typically been held in the Valley Forge area of Pennsylvania. However, with the conversion of the Valley Forge Convention Center to a casino and the continued growth of the event, Zenkaikon moved its convention to Lancaster. Many convention attendees don costumes of their favorite characters to attend the annual convention. The WMGSO is a community orchestra and choir whose mission is to share and celebrate video game music with as wide an audience as possible, primarily by putting on affordable, accessible concerts in the D.C. area. Game music weaves a complex melodic thread through the traditions, shared memories, values, and mythos of an entire international and intergenerational culture. WMGSO showcases this music because it largely escapes recognition in professional circles.
