  • Compact Discs
The Romantic Label Compact Discs 2008 Dear musical friends, Looking back on the catalogue from 2004 I can now see that we have developed the catalogue further with a number of Roman - tics. Some of the composers are nearly completely unknown today. They may merely serve as examples of the absolutely astounding amount of Romantic orchestral music, both unperformed and un - recorded. We are happy to say that this developement has brought us new distributors. The agents somehow do an ungrateful task: everybody expects CDs to be available everywhere, but somebody must import them and distribute them. I wish to thank the distributors for all the hard and enthusastic work they do and my praise also goes to stores and shops, with hardworking staff. We have also seen the developement of download. It is up to the computer industry to provide the public with good quality com - puters so that the music could be heard properly. The future: Again, I wish to thank all Sterling enthusiasts for providing me with a number of interesting ideas for recordings also in the future. Hopefully, we will be able to get the scores and parts necessary. That has not always been an easy and inexpensive task! Artist series: Apart from the Romantics we have developed a special series fo - cusing on gifted and interesting artists. The repertoire on these discs is often more well-known and, the performances are ab - solutely competitive in the CD market! Please as before, on e-mail, do provide me with more ideas and in - teresting projects for the future.

Baird Knechtel, Islington Graz, the second largest city lnAustr1a after Vienna, was host to the Eighth International Viola Congress, July 2 - 6, 19800 Th1s was my first visit to a European congress and 1t held several surprises for me. Sessions wer·e conducted in the Hochschule fUr Muslk. on Prof. Franz Zeyrlnger' s t'home turf.·t Zeyrlnger 1s virtually the father of viola societies which have sprung up internationally in the past ten years or so. U.S.A., Canada, Eng land, West Germany, New Zealand. Japan, Australia, Scotland, and as of this summer, Italy, all now have vl:f)la· societies (br~nches of the Internat10nale Viola Forschungsgesellschaft)--a very- exciting situation 1ndeed~ The program was varied and interesting, and there were appearances by ex.. ponents of not only the viola itself, but on otherlnstruments related to the vi ola. Among- the se were the viola d' amore, v iola de gamba, baryton, viola pomposa, and even an arpegglorie~ You will re'membe-r that-the viola pomposa is tile lnstrume nt with flve s trlngs for which J.S. Bach composed the last "cello" suite. The arpege10ne 1s of course the instrument invented in schubert's time by one stauffer and for which Schubert wrote the lovely "Arpesglonet' Sonata in A Minor in 1824. At this congress there was a concomitant emphasis on music of the 18th and 19th centuries; what was contemporary was generally c·onserva tlve in style.

  • Philip Jones
COLLECTED WRITINGS OF GERMAN MUSICOLOGIST MAX CHOP ON COMPOSER FREDERICK DELIUS Philip Jones Studies in the History and interpretation of Music Vo1um¢76 The Edwin Mellen Press Lewiston•Queenston•Lamr, eter 1 Introduction The German journalist, writer, composer and critic Max Chop is one of those influential, if little discussed figures who played a crucial role in furthering Frederick Delius's career in Gem1any during the early years of the twentieth century. His chief claim to fame is being the author of the first study of the composer, published by Harmonie Verlag, Berlin in 1907. In fact that year he wrote several substantial articles about Delius for some of the many music journals to which he regularly contributed, as well as reviews of the important performances of Delius's works being given in Germany at that time. 1 His enthusiasm for Delius, which had been developing for at least the two previous years, comes through clearly in all his writing. Chop lists his major articles on Delius in his letter to the composer of 3 November 1907 (see Delius: A Life in Letters, Vol. I, 1862-1908 by L Carley, p 309) 'as follows: 1. Frederick Delius: eine biographische Studie (Musikalisches Wochenblatt, Leipzig, Nos 35-37, 1907) 2.
