  • The Struggle for Democracy in the Political Minefield of Zimbabwe
THE STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY IN THE POLITICAL MINEFIELD OF ZIMBABWE A STORY OF THE POLITICAL VIOLENCE EXPERIENCED BY BLESSING CHEBUNDO, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, KWEKWE MOVEMENT FOR DEMOCRATIC CHANGE, ZIMBABWE Julius Caesar wrote: “I came, I saw, I conquered”. And I say: “I entered the Zimbabwe Political arena, I fight for Democracy, I will continue the struggle”. My story starts with the Zimbabwe Constitutional Referendum, held on the 12th February 2000, which saw President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF getting its first national defeat in the Political Arena and thereby setting the tone for Zimbabwe’s political violence. Sensing danger of a political whitewash by the newly formed MDC, Zanu PF gathered all its violent political might to crush the young MDC Party and its supporters. By voting against the changes in the Zimbabwe Constitutional Referendum, the people of Zimbabwe had taken heed of the call by the combined efforts of the MDC and the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) and had demonstrated their intolerance to the misrule of the prior 20 years by Zanu PF. As is 1 already known, the first targets were the white commercial farmers, their workers and the MDC activists. The whirlwind of political violence began with an opening bang in February 2000!! I had worked with Paul Themba Nyathi both under the NCA and since the inception of the MDC, during the peoples pre-convention. Pre-convention is the period for intensive coordination of Civic Society organisations leading to the birth of the MDC. Paul was a member of the MDC’s interim National Executive Committee (NEC), whilst I was the Interim Provincial Chairman for Midlands North.

[report also available from: http://www.hrforumzim.com ] ZIMBABWE HUMAN RIGHTS NGO FORUM Are they accountable? Examining alleged violators and their violations pre and post the Presidential Election March 2002 A report by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum December 2002 Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum Are They Accountable? The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (also known as the “Human Rights Forum”) has been in existence since January 1998. Nine non-governmental organisations working in the field of human rights joined together to provide legal and psychosocial assistance to the victims of the Food Riots of January 1998. The Human Rights Forum has now expanded its objectives to assist victims of organised violence, using the following definition: “Organised violence” means the inter-human infliction of significant avoidable pain and suffering by an organised group according to a declared or implied strategy and/or system of ideas and attitudes. Journal of Food Security, 2017, Vol. 5, No. 2, 51-57 Available online at http://pubs.sciepub.com/jfs/5/2/5 ©Science and Education Publishing DOI:10.12691/jfs-5-2-5 Miombo Woodland Mushrooms of Commercial Food Value: A Survey of Central Districts of Zimbabwe Alec Mlambo*, Mcebisi Maphosa Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Lupane State University, Box 170, Lupane, Zimbabwe *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Wild Miombo woodlands mushrooms are a largely ignored nutrition-boosting food and source of income among rural communities of Southern Africa. A survey was conducted in the Gweru, Kwekwe, Shurugwi and Mvuma districts of Zimbabwe to establish the importance of this natural resource in household poverty reduction.Gathered quantities and sales realized were recorded through structured personal interviews targeting two thirds of gatherers with equal numbers of male and female respondents and one key informant in each site. Results showed that of 14 gathered mushroom species (orders Cantharellales, Amanitales and Termitomycetes) across all sites, five species were of varying commercial value. Amanita loosii was the most traded and the only one with available data on sales. Ranked according to their gathered volumes by percent respondents per gathering occasion were A. loosii (97.48%), Termitomyces le-testui (72.94%) (non-mycorrhizal), Cantharellus heinemannianus (62.96%), Lactarius kabansus (46.72%) and C. miomboensis (37.04%). Average selling prices for A. loosii ranged from US$0.10 to US$1.00 per litre (about 600 grammes) across all sites. Average sales per site for a gathering occasion ranged between 20 and 400 litres per vendor across the sites, although up to 800 litres was recorded at Blinkwater for three gatherers.

  • Evaluating the Water Quality Within the Reticulation System of Kwekwe Municipality During the Dry and Wet Seasons
EVALUATING THE WATER QUALITY WITHIN THE RETICULATION SYSTEM OF KWEKWE MUNICIPALITY DURING THE DRY AND WET SEASONS. BY CHINOMONA SILENCE R134823G A DISSERTATION Submitted to The Midlands State University In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements For the degree of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE LAND AND WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT HONOURS DEGREE JUNE 2017 Abstract The research sought to evaluate the water quality within the reticulation system of Kwekwe municipality during the dry and wet seasons and to measure the water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, total coliforms, free and combined chlorine from the source, final stage of treatment and throughout the distribution system. It also had to consider how distance from one sampling point to another affect the quality of water. It had to consider measurement, the water treatment process, causes for poor water quality as well as desired international standards of World and Health Organisation, (WHO). Data was collected from nine different sampling points including schools, clinics, residential areas of Mbizo and Amaveni, Dutchman Pool Waterworks formerly known as Sebakwe Treatment Works as well as dam water. The data was collected in January and February 2016 representing wet season as well as in May and June 2016 representing dry season. Laboratory tests were conducted in order to analyse the quality of water at the different sampling sites. For statistical analysis both one way and two way ANOVA were used. Regression analysis was done to establish a relationship between water quality parameters and distance. i Declaration The undersigned certify that they have read and recommended for submission to the department of Land and Water Resources Management, in partial fulfilment of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Land and Water Resources Management, a research by Silence Chinomona entitled: EVALUATING THE WATER QUALITY WITHIN THE RETICULATION SYSTEM OF KWEKWE MUNICIPALITY DURING THE DRY AND WET SEASONS.
