  • Elmore Leonard, 1925-2013
    ELMORE LEONARD, 1925-2013 Elmore Leonard was born October 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to his father’s position working for General Motors, Leonard’s family moved numerous times during his childhood, before finally settling in Detroit, MI in 1934. Leonard went on to graduate high school in Detroit in 1943, and joined the Navy, serving in the legendary Seabees military construction unit in the Pacific theater of operations before returning home in 1946. Leonard then attended the University of Detroit, majoring in English and Philosophy. Plans to assist his father in running an auto dealership fell through on his father’s early death, and after graduating, Leonard took a job writing for an ad agency. He married (for the first of three times) in 1949. While working his day job in the advertising world, Leonard wrote constantly, submitting mainly western stories to the pulp and/or mens’ magazines, where he was establishing himself with a strong reputation. His stories also occasionally caught the eye of the entertainment industry and were often optioned for films or television adaptation. In 1961, Leonard attempted to concentrate on writing full-time, with only occasional free- lance ad work. With the western market drying up, Leonard broke into the mainstream suspense field with his first non-western novel, The Big Bounce in 1969. From that point on, his publishing success continued to increase – with both critical and fan response to his works helping his novels to appear on bestseller lists. His 1983 novel La Brava won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

WAOH-LP operates on Channel 29 with a maximum peak visual effective radiated power of 60.6 kilowatts utilizing a direc- tional antenna. The draft table of DTV allotments contained in the Sixth Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in MM Docket 87-268 proposes to allot Channel 29 to Youngstown, Ohio, as a DTV allotment for use by WKBN-TV, whose present NTSC operation is on Channel 27. The WAOH-LP transmitter site lies 21.3 kilometers inside the predicted 43.8 dBu noise limited contour for the proposed DTV operation of WKBN- TV on Channel 29. Thus, it is obvious that continued operation by WAOH-LP on Chan- nel 29 would cause interference to the DTV operation of WKBN-TV proposed in this draft table, since it is impossible to provide the required protection to a cochannel facil- ity, either DTV or NTSC, from a transmitter site located within its protected contour. It was winning early critic awards and gaining the kind of momentum a movie needs to win Hollywood’s biggest prize. Much was made about the authenticity of the film by director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who used insider access to tell the sweeping, meticulously detailed story of the decade-long search for Osama bin Laden. Then last week, “Zero Dark Thirty” won five Academy Award nominations, including for best picture, and this past weekend, it was No. 1 at the domestic box office with a gross of nearly $25 million. Yet what may be the film’s biggest challenge in the pursuit of Oscar glory is playing out from Hollywood to Washington as debate mounts over the film’s accuracy in its depiction of what some regard as torture and whether the movie itself endorses the use of torture. Lawmakers are also investigating whether the CIA gave Ms. Bigelow and Mr. Boal false information as to whether enhanced-interrogation tactics led directly to the 2011 capture and killing of the al Qaeda leader in Pakistan. The stories told in this genre reflect values that are embedded in American culture. They are typically about men of strong character who represent a certain kind of moral order, and the story being told is about how they confront and overcome villains, outlaws, and other “bad guys” who are enemies of that order. It can be a black-and-white world of good vs. evil, or it can be a world where there are many shades of gray, so that it’s less easy to tell the difference. This conflict is typically played out on the American frontier, in the late 19th century (1865-1900), during the decades after the American Civil War. It is the era of cowboys, the growth of the cattle industry, the fencing of the open range, the demise of the buffalo herds, the final displacement of the Native American tribes, the building of cross- continental railroads, and rapid settlement of the frontier territories fed by waves of immigration and the availability of free land made possible by the Homestead Acts. The conflict in a western typically involves and is eventually resolved by violence – fistfights, gunfire, sometimes even explosives.

    Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Post-Cinematic Affect: On Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales Steven Shaviro Wayne State University Introduction In this text, I look at three recent media productions – two films and a music video – that reflect, in particularly radical and cogent ways, upon the world we live in today. Olivier Assayas’ Boarding Gate (starring Asia Argento) and Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales (with Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar) were both released in 2007. Nick Hooker’s music video for Grace Jones’s song ‘Corporate Cannibal’ was released (as was the song itself) in 2008. These works are quite different from one another, in form as well as content. ‘Corporate Cannibal’ is a digital production that has little in common with traditional film. Boarding Gate, on the other hand, is not a digital work; it is thoroughly cinematic, in terms both of technology, and of narrative development and character presentation. Southland Tales lies somewhat in between the other two. It is grounded in the formal techniques of television, video, and digital media, rather than those of film; but its grand ambitions are very much those of a big-screen movie. Nonetheless, despite their evident differences, all three of these works express, and exemplify, the ‘structure of feeling’ that I would like to call (for want of a better phrase) post-cinematic affect. Film gave way to television as a ‘cultural dominant’ a long time ago, in the mid-twentieth century; and television in turn has given way in recent years to computer- and network-based, and digitally generated, ‘new media.’ Film itself has not disappeared, of course; but filmmaking has been transformed, over the past two decades, from an analogue process to a heavily digitised one.
